Motivation and Goal Setting

Motivation Ø No one can teach you

how to think, you must motivate yourself to learn how to learn!

Ø  You are your own motivator.

Ø  Your motivation must come from within yourself. Others may try to encourage you, but you are the only one who can attain what you desire. You must convince yourself - you can!

Motivation Partner Ø Start with surrounding

yourself with positive people. They will encourage and nurture you.

Ø Stay away from negative people because they will discourage you and sabotage your dreams and goals.

Goal Setting Ø “If you don't know where you are going,

you're likely to wind up somewhere else!”

Ø Think of a goal as your final destination, if you don’t know what your final destination is, there is no way to plan on how to get there.

Goal = Success

Have a Goal Ø Goals are like road maps; they get you from

one point to another.

Ø Goals provide the direction you need to reach your destination, the motivation to sustain you on your trip, and a way to measure your progress.

Ø The best way to get results is to plan for the future, but live one day at a time.

Example Goals Ø  I will study more this nine weeks.

Vs. Ø  I want to study more effectively at home and at school to increase major and minor

assessment scores. In addition to self-motivation, I need the help of my parents, siblings, teachers and friends. I need my parents to structure a designated study time and location for me. I will set an alarm on my iPad to remind me of study time and make sure that I do not schedule anything during my designated study time. After I have studied independently, I need my parents to quiz me on the information and provide me with feedback. I need my siblings and friends to respect my study time and cause minimal distractions. I need my friends and siblings to encourage me to study, quiz me on the information and provide me with feedback. Using my pre-tests as a baseline, I will track my progress by keeping track of my test and quiz grades and looking for growth across scores. I will use the study tips listed on the class website, class notes and study tools to review information nightly for at least 20 minutes. I will access my success by comparing my pre-test scores at the beginning of the nine weeks to my post-test scores at the end of the nine weeks.

Example Goals �  I want to act better in class.

Vs. �  I want to refrain from disrupting the lesson and distracting others in class so that I can

focus on learning and improve my grades and be a more positive member of the learning community. In order to achieve my goal I need the support of my teacher and classmates. I need my teacher to help create a list of appropriate and inappropriate classroom behaviors. I need my teacher to help me create an “If…Then…” chart to clearly define consequences for inappropriate behaviors and rewards or appropriate behaviors. Finally, I my teacher to help me create an accountability piece such as a checklist to keep track of my progress over the nine weeks. I need my classmates to encourage me when I am behaving appropriately and redirect me when I choose to act inappropriately. At the end of the nine weeks, I will tally the appropriate behaviors and the inappropriate behaviors. From the beginning of the nine weeks to the end of the nine weeks I hope to see the number of appropriate behaviors outweigh the number of inappropriate behaviors. This will allow me to examine my growth over the quarter.
