ACHIEVEMENT MOTIVATION.

• Atkinson (1964) saw achievement motivation as an aspect of personality.

• This is a personality factor that describes our persistence to keep striving for success.

• It allows for people to persists even when they meet obstacles and even failure.

• This is a valuable quality for a sports person, which is why it is studied in sports psychology.

Imagine you are in the last five minutes of the semi-final in which the score is 1-1. You have just won a penalty kick, the coach asks you if you want to take it.

You know you have a 50-50 chance of scoring.

If you was to say ‘no thanks’ This shows that your behaviour is driven by the ‘need to avoid failure’ (Naf).

If you was to stand-up take the kick,This shows that your behaviour is driven by the ‘need to achieve’ (Nach).

Coaches want their athlete to be at point A. This shows a high degree of competitiveness combined with low need to avoid failure.
