MOTIVATIONAL MAPPING

Making Maps work for you 2

WHAT IS MOTIVATIONAL MAPPING ?Motivational Maps deal with states which are changing and dynamic It is a self-perception inventory, which gives an insight into the core motivation of a person. The three primary sources used to develop the Maps are Maslow, Edgar Schein and the Enneagram. They are used by many large organisations in the UK as part of their annual staff appraisal.

HOW DOES IT WORK ?The map is an on-line questionnaire, taking around 15 minutes to complete. This produces a 14 page report using a cluster analysis that identifies what motivates the individual, how strong the need is and the degree to which it is currently being met, thereby forming the starting point for the instigation of powerful and empowering professional and personal intervention strategies.

WHY DOES IT WORK ?A Motivational Map is not a personality test or a psychometric profile. A map demonstrates the alignment of our purpose, with our skills and knowledge and motivation, unlocking the power within to achieve goals, secure relationships and to grow personally and professionally, while meeting the needs of the individual, the team and the organisation in a focused, non-confrontational manner.Motivational Maps have established that there are nine motivators in the human psyche, present at all times; but in different combinations and intensities because we all have different but stable personalities different and complex values, and different and many divergent expectations. They are in three groups of three, Relationships, Achievement and Growth. Along with the names for the three types of motivators there are names for the nine motivators themselves as seen in the diagram below. The important point is the shared language makes this a powerful model where we can exactly describe – and so make ‘visible’ – the invisible qualities of motivation. It is because there has been no real language to describe motivation before that it has been largely avoided in business and organisational life, it’s too nebulous and vague. This can now change: we have a language.

“Motivational Maps have allowed

me to hold difficult conversations

(ones I may formerly have avoided)

in a highly professional manner,

achieving the best outcomes for

the schools and for the individual

concerned.”

David Harding. Executive Head,

Griffin Schools Trust

STAFF APPRAISAL

The Motivational Map provides an opportunity for self-review and thereafter a focus for clarifying needs, opportunities, actions and outcomes. Members of the academic staff complete a Motivational Map prior to their pre-appraisal meeting.

A TEAM MAP is produced placing each individual into the current team. The interplay between members of the team profile indicates how they interact.

Medium and Senior leaders frequently utilise a team map in order to review the operational effectiveness of their team and their management strategies in order to support departmental development in the context of the school development plan.

APPLICATION

• Engagement in the appraisal process rises as the Motivational Map makes

the process personal and pertinent to the individual, meeting their personal

and professional needs while achieving the needs of the school

• The individual takes possession of their appraisal targets and are therefore90% more likely to achieve them as they have a need to do so—it becomes

something they want to do rather than some-thing which is done to them

• Motivational Maps reduce the time spent in appraisal meetings by 50% as

discussion and target setting conversations become highly focused on need,

actions and outcomes

• Appraisal meetings become less stressful and confrontational because theyare based on the needs of the individual, reviewing their Achievement, their Growth and their Relationships within a professional context in a non–

judgmental manner. The well being of staff therefore increases

“ I just wanted to share with you that

we have made an appointment: we are

so excited that we have made a great

choice! Your help and support has been

invaluable– we could not believe how

accurate the shortlisted candidates

Motivational Maps were, and your sug-

gested questions for the interview

panel were illuminating. We cannot

thank you enough.”

Caroline Skipper, Headteacher. Hull.

RECRUITMENT

Shortlisted candidates complete a Motivational Map and the outcomes

are reviewed against the job specifications and the envisaged role. A

team report is drawn up placing each candidate into the current team.

The interplay between members of the team profile indicates how they

will interact and allows key, performance related questions to be

provided to the selection board. The questions cut through any personal

interview preparation and CV details, illuminating the behaviours and

attitudes of the individual which will influence his or her effectiveness in

their role.

APPLICATION

Increased levels of confidence in candidate selection

More incisive interview questioning and discussion

Higher take up on offers

Lower drop out rate

Increased staff retention rate

Lower recruitment costs

Lower staff induction costs

Less time wasted

“I’ve found using Motivational

Maps as a team building exercise,

very insightful. They expose the

dynamics of the team and identify

any gaps that hold the team back

from delivering peak performance."

Kriss Akabusi, MBE, Director, The Akabusi Company.

• Effective communication

• Understanding the viewpoint of others'• Effective creation of clearly defined roles, responsibilities

and accountabilities

• Creating a clear understanding of the operating styles and

needs of other team members• Monitoring the effectiveness and well being of the team in a

positive, non-confrontational manner• Supporting the team leader in creating effective performance

boosting intervention strategies

Key to the process of change is creating awareness of the current

situation, engendering a need in the team to change. Identifying and

communicating a clear strategic direction. Motivational Maps will identify the roles , the inter-reliance, responsibilities and

accountabilities to make this happen.

To be effective as an organization the four core areas need to interact

and support each other ; Finance, Marketing & Sales, Operations and

People. All organisations depend on their people.

What drives their skill and knowledge; their loyalty; commitment and

engagement; their ideas and innovation and their energy?

Their motivation.

Motivational Maps are a new language and metric by which to de-

scribe and measure motivation.

“ I have always been fascinated by

how we can show the invisible pro-

gress and development children

make beyond their visible grades.

Sale and Turner have achieved this:

they have provide a script with which

leaders can monitor teaching

performance and teachers canmonitor and

report on their

pupils learning

performance.

The Motivational

Map offers a

blue print for

where the energy

lies in a teacher and a learner.”

Andrew Hammond. Headteacher.

YOUTH MAPPING

As school leaders what we seek to do, "Is to create the conditions in which a person feels disposed to be intrinsically motivated. And that is possible. But first you need to know what motivates a teacher or a child, because we are not all motivated by the same aspirations or activities. This, surely, is one of the most important tasks for a teacher - to help her students identify what motivates them, deep down. It has taken me many years to realise that achieving what you want is almost always possible; it's knowing what you want that's the hard part". Andrew Hammond-Invisible Ink Series, Book 3. John Catt Publishers.

“ If I had understood how the person

ticked we would never have reached

this impasse—the maps were

amazing and I will be using them in

future to help me understand my

employees. Thank you for a great

solution.”

MEDIATION USING MAPS When an issue with staff/parents/students has grown into a problem where the school have exhausted all avenues and have reached a point where there is no longer any discussion, where there seems to be no answer but extreme measures, facilitative mediation could be the answer.

We offer a new approach using the Motivational Maps to reach a new understanding where the parties come together with no agenda. The mediator will instigate process of exploring the interests, needs and con-

cerns of each party, allowing the parties themselves to generate options for mutually agreed resolution. The mediator is trained to be impartial and will not advise any person or offer any opinions.

It starts with a decision by the people involved to explore options using Motivational Maps as a resource. This process gives a clear picture of the underlying misunderstanding and enables a wider discussion around the perceived problem.

One day of facilitative mediation could take away the stress all concerned experience when there is a constant battle undermining everyone's ability to solve an issue that affects life in school.

APPLICATION

• Gives the individuals concerned a new insight

• Enables a wider discussion not directly related to the problem

• A map will highlight the source of the problem

• Increased confidence in the parties involved

• Lower resistance to the solution

• Increased confidence with a mutually agreed answer
