WHEN it comesto buildingcars of thefinest quality,there’s

It takes 11 hides – importedfrom parts of Scandinaviawhere the environment isinsect-free and there are nobarbed wire fences to damagethe leather – to make a set ofupholstery for one car.

Everything is then doublestitched by hand using twoneedles simultaneously andeven a single steering wheeltakes eight hours to trim.

And the cars’ veneers aremade from wood hewn fromthe boles of 70-year-old trees,then boiled for five days tomake them supple.

Just sitting in a Bentleyevokes a sense of occasion –all the better when that modelis the trendy Continental GTCconvertible.

The prestige marque moreoften name-checked by therich and famous may oncehave been former stablemateRolls-Royce, but Bentley’s thebrand to have reallyflourished in recent times,gaining a cool, sexy imagewith the advent of footballers’favourite the Continental GT.

When it comes to open-top

motoring, cruising along inthe GTC is as good as it gets.Whereas its coupe cousindoesn’t appeal to everyone, the2+2 convertible is the mostdistinctive and beguiling carBentley has produced.

What a sound it makes too.You would expect a boominglike a demon awakening fromthe earth’s depths whenthere’s a W12twin-turbocharged 6.0-litreengine under the bonnet.

But it’s only when the hoodis lowered – a push buttonoperation that takes less than30 seconds – that you trulyappreciate what a hardcoretune the powerpack plays. TheFoo Fighters have nothing onthis.

Inside, the Bentley is bothelegant and effortlesslymodern – all leather cladindulgence and hand-builtluxury with a matchlessfeelgood factor.

embossed in the seat backs,Breitling analogue clock,organ-stop controls for theventilation and chromeknurled switches inspired bycontemporary jewellery.

In fact so comfortable arethe heavily bolstered leatherseats and so cultured theswitches and steering that myimpression on swopping theBentley for a model fromanother premium car brandwas one of: “Oh dear, this feelsa bit cheap.”

Of course there’s a downside, not least of which is the15mpg – if you’re lucky –petrol consumption and skyhigh emissions, but then ifyou can afford a princely

£136,200 for a car you’rehardly likely to fret about fuelcosts.

On a balmy summerevening there’s no finerexperience than glidingeffortlessly along as thesix-speed automatic GTCeases seamlessly through thegears.

There’s an open stretch ofroad ahead and you switch tomanual mode, nudging theF1-style paddle shifts until . . .you can stave off thetemptation no longer, and theboot goes down.

The acceleration isthunderous. And therein liesthe biggest frustration of all –a car capable of travelling

almost three times the legallimit, and you can only do70mph.

It doesn’t finish therethough. Drivers who craveeven greater performance canpay an extra £5,000 for themost powerful Bentleyproduction car ever – theContinental GT Speed Coupe.

The engineers have eked anextra 15% of torque and 9% ofpower to arm this rocket shipon wheels with a 202mph topspeed, 0-60 lift-off in 4.3seconds and standstill to 100in just 10.3.

The lucky few with accessto a racetrack can takeadvantage of the enhancedchassis, superior grip fromthe 20-inch alloy wheels andperformance tyres, SportTraction system, uprateddamper settings and thelargest brakes of anyproduction passenger car onsale today. It’s a whirlwind.

But even Bentley can makea mistake, and in the case ofthe tested GT Speed itconcerned the aluminiumeffect fascia panels and stripsaround the centre console,glovebox and parts of the rear.

Cheap and tacky, they couldhave been stripped from thetable tops at a greasy spoondiner. Thankfully they’re notcompulsory.

with a car park the size of twofootball pitches where 4x4s are onlyallowed to be parked against aperimeter wall.

The official line, that they occupytoo much space and that the doorsopen too wide, is of course completenonsense.

When I visited aforementionedestablishment this week there was aline of out and out gas guzzlers onparade, along with a few lessmonstrous off-roaders belonging topeople who maybe felt they weredoing their bit for the environment.

Lexus boasts the first highperformance hybrid SUV in itsimposing RX400h, but it could besaid to have a wheel in each camp.

Its Hybrid Synergy Drive systemcombines a 3.3-litre V6 petrolengine with a 165bhp front electricmotor, a high voltage battery and agenerator plus a second electricmotor at the rear axle.

At start up and at low speeds theLexus runs silently on electricpower, cutting emissions to zero.

And whenever the vehicle comesto a standstill, the engineautomatically cuts out to minimisefuel consumption too – a bit spookyat first but you soon get used to it.

That’s the green bit. But floor the

throttle and the V6 rumbles into lifepropelling the RX to 60mph in afraction over seven secondsresulting in an average return, inthe test car’s case at least, of 30.5miles per gallon.

The ride is superb and progressseamless thanks to theelectronically controlled CVTtransmission. Upshot though is aCO2 emissions rating of 192g/km.

It means the RX400h may begreener than exclusively petrol or

diesel SUVs, but making the most ofthe car’s sporty credentials will stillhave a damaging effect on theenvironment.

Otherwise you are looking at anoutstanding, if very expensive,vehicle that is enjoyable to drive,offers a commanding view of theroad and is sumptuously appointed.

Interior space is plentiful andthere’s ample room for three adultsin the back while principal stowagecomprises a large boot with

powered tailgate and a central boxthat opens at the push of a button.

Each of the four trim grades –RX400h, SR, SE and SE-L – iscomprehensively equipped, thelikes of nine airbags (includingdriver’s knee airbag), eight-wayelectrically adjustable heated frontseats, cruise control, rear privacyglass, multi-zone aircon and 18-inchalloys all coming as standard.

And the RX trips the lightfantastic with a couple of bright

touches like Lexus signs on thedoor running strips that light up ina fluorescent blue and intelligentAdaptive Front Lights thatimproves vision through bends.

Those opting for top spec SE-Lare also treated to the sharpest rearview colour park assist screen and aLexus Multimedia Pack with11-speaker Mark Levinson hi-fi, satnav, Bluetooth and DVD systemwith individual screens attached tothe front seat backs.

TIMES may be tough forVauxhall, but in the Insigniathe company has come upwith a car of outstandingmerit.

As rival mid-size models from thelikes of Ford, Volkswagen andRenault moved increasingly moreupmarket, the pressure mounted onthe Americans to raise the stakes.

And at the start of this year theypulled a rabbit from the hat with anelegant, classy offering that’s lightyears ahead of its predecessor theVectra.

I’m not one to take much notice ofsound bites, but GM Europe’sdesign guru Mark Adams got itspot-on by describing Insignia as“sculptured artistry meets Germanprecision”.

A few years ago you could neverhave made a remark like that withregard to a repmobile.

But times have moved on to thepoint that the Insignia is as likely toappeal as strongly to private familybuyers as it does to the fleets.

This is a very stylish looking car– though not as sleek as the SportsTourer estate model – with itsbonnet crease, restyled Griffinbadge and sweeping light lensesreally catching the eye.

The hatchback and saloonversions come with a choice ofthree petrol and two diesel engines,the latter pair both 2.0-litre CDTiturbocharged units producing 130or 160PS. Prices are from £17,130.

The tested model was the higher

powered of the oil-burners andnoisier than I was expecting. Onceon the go it soon proved anexceptional powerplant though,with lots of torque, fuel economy of41mpg and nimble handling.

It had to prove its worth on amarathon motorway stint north ofthe border, then a series of ruralScottish roads before making the

return journey with twice the load.At no point did the Insignia feel

anything other than absolutelypoised, stable and rewarding.

The hatchback’s boot is long andvery deep, so you can pack in loadsof gear and interior space isacceptable provided you don’t needto carry three passengers across theback – the centre rear position is

perched and low on headroom.Cabin materials feel of a

premium quality while theinstrument panel is angled and thedashboard has a wraparound effectcreating an illusion of space. Best ofall are the dials which look likethey are floating in a pool ofglowing red light.

But not only is this a car with lots

of presence it also feels well boltedtogether and has that almostGermanic feel of quality and somuch better than the Vectra.

All Insignia models come withthe likes of ESP, passenger airbagdeactivation, automatic headlights,electric driver’s seat adjustment,cruise control and a fullcomplement of airbags as standard.
