AS many as 50 per cent of car owners expect tokeep their motor for at least five years, a survey hasshown.

And 27 per cent plan to hold on to their currentmodel for more than seven years, according to thepoll by Greenbee Car Insurance, which is part of theJohn Lewis Partnership.

The research among 1,440 adults also showed that7 per cent intend to keep their car for 11 years.

Those aged 65 and over will have their current carfor longest, with 43 per cent in this age group sayingthey will own their vehicle for at least seven years, compared with 24 per cent of those aged 35-44.

Those in Wales and south west England look set tokeep their cars the longest, with 34 per cent planningto hold on to their vehicle for more than seven years.

In contrast, just 23 per cent of Scots intend tokeep their vehicle for more than seven years.

Only 10 per cent said they would get rid of theircurrent car within two years of purchase. This rises to23 per cent of 18 to 24-year-olds, who are the onesmost likely to want to swap the soonest.

Just 7 per cent of 25 to 34-year-olds and only 8per cent of those aged 35-44 are planning a changewithin two years.

Greenbee.com managing director James Fursesaid: “The research demonstrates that, when itcomes to their cars, British drivers are keen to tightentheir belts and hold on to their current motor for aslong as possible in order to keep costs down.’’

CAR buyers are cutting corners to save money duringthe recession.

More than a quarter (28 per cent) are willing tobuy from an unknown private seller, a survey bymotors.co.uk revealed.

And 10 per cent of the 1,642 drivers polled wereprepared to opt for a car without knowing anythingof its service history as long as the price was right.

Also, two per cent said they would even pay for avehicle over the telephone without having seen it inan effort to save cash.

The poll also revealed that 60 per cent did notcheck that a car was safe and legal, and that themajority were unsure about log books, mileagechecks or vehicle identity numbers.

Katie Armitage from motors.co.uk added: “Thereare around seven million used cars bought and soldevery year at an average cost of £5,000.

“If your new car is found to be illegal you lose thismoney outright without hope of redress. Ourresearch has found that because of the credit crunchmore people are taking risks and so more are proneto being caught out.’’

RESEARCH by Kwik-Fit reveals that more than six mil-lion motorists may be driving their car without anMoT certificate because they have forgotten therenewal date.

The firm says motorists caught driving vehicleswithout a valid MOT certificate face a £60 fine, anda lapsed MOT can also impact on car insurance andprevent owners from renewing road tax.

David White, Kwik-Fit’s customer services director, says forgetting to MoT one’s car is a widespreadproblem that can have serious consequences.“March is the busiest month for MoTs, so numbersof forgetful motorists driving illegally will escalateover this period.’’

A typically solid German superminiTHE POLO

THE ALTO SZ2

THE fifth generation Polo is here but whatcan we expect from the latest iteration ofVolkswagen’s flagship small car product?

The answer will surprise nobody that hasfollowed the fortunes of VW over recentyears and it’s unlikely to please those who liketheir superminis with a bit of passion, flairand charisma.

The fifth Polo is a lot like the four thatwent before it: solid, stylish, excellently engi-neered and looking a lot like a little Golf. Itsets lofty standards that only the cream of thecurrent supermini crop can hope to beat.

The Polo follows on with the styling themedebuted on the Scirocco coupe and subse-quently adapted for the MkVI Golf. The thingrille serves to visually widen and lower thecar, giving it a more planted and sportyappearance.

Lines are typical Volkswagen, clean andunfussy, the design team led by Walter DeSilva playing upon VW’s classless image andsteering well clear of the gimmicky stylingdevices we see elsewhere in the market.

There’s certainly nothing to offend tradi-tional Polo customers but compared to someof the sector’s more adventurous stylingefforts, the overall look might be too reservedfor some tastes.

The car certainly looks compact andnuggety but it’s also substantially larger than

it predecessor. The track has been widenedfront and rear, the overall width is up by32mm to 1,682mm and the height isdropped by 13mm to 1,454mm - all thisproving that the Polo’s more dynamic stanceisn’t merely a stylist’s illusion.

Naturally, this Polo’s more generous dimen-sions, including an overall length that’s up by36mm to 3,952mm, equate to a more spa-cious interior than the previous generationcar. Passengers benefit from increased legand headroom as well as more space in the

rear to stow their luggage. There’s a 280-litreboot which increases to 952-litres when therear seats are folded down. Volkswagen hasworked on another low key but high qualitycabin environment for the Polo. Soft touchplastics and subtle aluminium detailing are theorder of the day.

Optional convenience features include anair-conditioned glovebox, an MP3 player con-nection point, a multifunction steering wheeland a touch screen satellite navigation system.

Prices are estimated at £9,000 to £15,000.

A LOT of very clever people have thought longand hard about the future of the automotiveindustry and the consensus seems to be thatcars are going to have to get smaller. Thatmust be music to the ears of Suzuki, a compa-ny with half a century of experience in pro-ducing small cars.

With the age of the gas-guzzler apparentlyall but up, the market should be moving inthe Japanese marque’s direction and the Altocity car could be a major beneficiary, particu-larly in entry-level SZ2 form.

All Suzuki Altos get the same 1.0-litre 3-cylinder engine. It’s a modern unit boastingfour valves per cylinder and aluminium con-struction which helps to keep weight down. Itgenerates 66bhp at 6,000rpm and although itcan struggle on inclines or when there’s aheavy load on board forcing you to stay ontop of the gears, it’s adequate for travellingone-up around town as most city cars tend todo.

The engine noise is quite prevalent but it’snot unpleasant and even sounds mildly sportyat higher revs. When cruising, it settles downwell and only the wind noise is really notice-able.

It’s no longer enough for city cars to bespace efficient wheeled boxes. Customershave come to expect a certain cheeky styleand the likes of the Fiat 500, smart fortwoand Toyota iQ have delivered it.

The Alto isn’t in this league in terms of itscute factor or its price but it’s a far from unap-pealing proposition with its big teardrop head-lights and rising side window line.

The C-pillars are rather large and this does-n’t help rear visibility but the five-door bodystyle offers decent practicality. With a coupleof six-footers in the front, there’s adequatespace for a couple more to squeeze into theback seats. Head room is good and there’s aboot behind of a reasonable but not spectacu-

lar 129-litres that can increase to 367-litreswith the seats folded flat.

Equipment wise, the Alto turns in a strongperformance, even in this entry-level SZ2 form.Power steering, electric front windows, a tilt-adjustable steering column, an MP3 compati-ble CD stereo, remote central locking and a50:50 split rear seat are all standard.

The £500 it costs to upgrade to the SZ3model only gets you air-conditioning, so cost-conscious buyers might feel inclined to stayput. The safety equipment includes fourairbags and ABS brakes but you’ll need toshell out for the SZ4 model to get ESP stabilitycontrol.

The Alto’s lightweight design allows it to getthe most of its 1.0-litre engine and in terms offuel economy, very few petrol powered carscan touch it.

The Alto can average 64.2mpg on the com-bined cycle and 51mpg around town wheremost owners will use it. Accompanied byemissions of just 103g/km and the lowest pos-sible insurance grouping, it makes the Altoone of the most cost-effective purchases inthe sector.

With the Alto, Suzuki will be looking for itsexpertise and perseverance over half a centuryin the small car market to pay off. It’s neverhad the sector to itself, though, and as buyersturn to more compact and efficient vehicles ingrowing numbers, so rival manufacturers willbe driven to compete more fiercely for sales.

The Alto has the capacity to do well in thismarket but it will rely on its value proposition,so there’s a lot riding on the SZ2 entry-levelmodels.

The price is £7,245.

THE iQ

BUY LOCAL Harry Feeney Toyota Devonshire Road, Blackpool Tel 01253 308200

LESS than three metres long butpacked with intriguing design fea-tures, the Toyota iQ is an unashamed-ly upmarket citycar that’s the size ofthe smallest urban runabout, has theperformance of a supermini and thecabin quality of a family hatchback.

Designed to seat three adults andone child, the interior finish and exte-rior detailing are several notchesabove the citycar norm – as is theprice. Still, for those smart enough toseek a tiny car that’s anything but tinyin its outlook, it could be just right.

If you thought the two-seat smartcar to be well packaged, then you’llmarvel at how Toyota has been ableto fit in room for three adults and achild into a package hardly any big-ger. How have they managed it? Well, the big 15-inch alloy wheels really areexactly at each corner of the car, sothe space in between is virtually alldedicated to people. This wasn’t easyto achieve: the front wheels and theirdriveshafts had to be repositioned infront of the engine and gearbox

tance from the tip of the frontbumper to the accelerator has beenreduced by 120mm, freeing up thatextra cabin space. The iQ’s classy-looking too: the wraparound rearglass, the smoked headlamp unitsand the door mirrors with inbuiltindicators all position this as an up-market small car choice.

Step inside and the clever ideascontinue. The asymmetric dashboardwas designed to open up the wholecabin area, scooped out ahead of thefront seat passenger so much thatlegroom is acceptable even when theseat is pushed right forward to allowfor a large six foot adult to sit com-fortably behind.

It’s a different story in the seatbehind the driver of course but achild would probably be fine therefor short distances. Alternatively, youcan fold down half of the back seat– or all of it – and increase luggage

space from a negligible 32-litres to asmall Tesco shop-sized 242-litres.There’s also a storage tray that slidesfrom below the rear seat.

This is a cabin that feels muchlarger than Toyota’s more conven-tional Aygo citycar. And it is.Shoulder-to-shoulder distancebetween driver and front passengeris 50mm wider than in the compa-ny’s supposedly larger Yaris supermi-ni and you could downsize from

their even larger Auris family hatch-back without noticing much differ-ence in this respect. A flat, thinunder-floor fuel tank, a 20 per centsmaller heater unit and repositionedsteering gear all make this possible. One day, all small cars will bedesigned this way.

There’s a choice of two petrolengines and the option of eithermanual or CVT automatic gearboxes. Most will go for the 67bhp three

cylinder 1.0-litre unit but you can alsotalk to your dealer about the fourcylinder 98bhp 1.33-litre engine bor-rowed from the Yaris.

This is the ultimate expression ofrefined, yet environmentally efficienturban mobility, a model that turnsconventional citycar thinking on itshead. True, there’s premium pricingbut nothing you’ll ever buy will bemore cleverly designed. It is, inessence, a little car for people whothink big.rather than in their

usual place behind. Asa result, the typical dis-

The price is £9,495-£10,275[1.0] with fuel consumption(combined) 65.7mpg.

Car of futureWITH 12 million FordFiestas already soldacross the world, thelatest model has a lot tolive up to and it's beencarefully designed to suc-ceed. It's lighter, yetstiffer, greener andcheaper to run. It's alsosafer and better to driveeven than the Mazda2supermini with which itshares a common plat-form. This car represents Ford's future - inmore ways than one.

Inside, the first thing that you'll notice isthat there's nowhere to put your key, Fordhaving switched to one of those trendy(but rather pointless) 'Power' buttonswhich you press to start. It's easier to getcomfortable at the wheel than it was inthe old car thanks to the improved seatingand rake/reach wheel adjustment.

And this is the first Ford small car tofeature a driver's knee airbag, along withside airbags and optional curtain airbags.

Engine choices start with the familiar60PS 1.25 and 90PS 1.4-litre Duratecpetrol units. Also carried over is the old, frugal if rather leisurely 68PS 1.4-litreTDCi. Above this level, things start to geta bit more interesting. Ford have been

doing a bit of work on the old model's90PS 1.6-litre TDCi Duratorq engine withthe result that you can now order it inECOnetic form in which it emits just99g/km of CO2, making it exempt fromUK road fund duty. Other superminis looklike lumbering 4x4s in comparison.

At the other end of the scale, Ford iskeen to show driving enthusiasts it hasn'tforgotten them, with the introduction of a120PS 1.6-litre T-VCT petrol powerplantthat makes 60mph in 9.9s, used in plushermodels that include the sporty Zetec-S.

Overall, a pragmatic mix between triedand tested elements that are cost effectiveand shiny new details that gel extremelywell. Small car buyers simply can't ignorethis car. The price range is £8,514-£13,406.

hyundai

IN car terms, Korean used to be abyword for tiny prices and drearydesign but that’s changing.

The big European marques arelooking to Hyundai and its sisterbrand Kia with growing concern astheir products mount a powerful chal-lenge to the status quo in theEuropean market.

Cars like Hyundai’s i20 superminihave shown that the Koreans can doquality almost as well as they do valueand in the next stage they’ll be tryingto master sporty and desirable too.

The 3-door version of the i20 is auseful marker of how far Hyundai andKorea have come.

The i20 3-door is available with arange of petrol and diesel engines, the petrol line-up opening withHyundai’s advanced 1.2-litre Kappaunit. With 77bhp, it’s not the punchi-est engine fitted to a three-doorsupermini but its all-alloy constructionand high-tech combustion systemgive a useful blend of performanceand economy.

In three-door form, the i20 sharesthe same dimensions and wheelbaseas the five-door car and despite itsedgier looks, customers can expect asimilarly polished driving experience.

The three-door version of a super-mini tends to be the sporty one andthe i20 model is no different.

It’s the same size as the five-doorand the front and rear are identicalbut it does feature elongated doorswhich aid access to the rear alongwith a tweaked side window line thattapers off to a point at the rear.Inside, practicality shouldn’t be affected toomuch by the conversion.

Access to the rear seats is obviously trickierbut Hyundai’s memory front seats slide a longway forward to allow rear seat passengers tostep inside before returning to their originalposition.

The three-door version of the i20 is significantfor more than its injection of a sportier flavourinto the range. It also makes the i20 that littlebit cheaper.

Hyundai’s pricing strategy isn’t straight out ofthe bargain basement these days. The brandknows its latest products can sell at levels that

are more in tune with the class leaders but valuefor money remains a central part of the mar-que’s strategy. A five-year warranty, generousequipment provision and a price range tickleddownwards by the three-door’s introductionmake the i20 an appealing prospect for peoplewho make their buying decisions with a calcula-tor close at hand.

Hyundai’s exemplary warranty package willbe a major draw for buyers with their eyes onthe bottom line and the engines don’t let theside down when it comes to economy andemissions. The 1.2-litre petrol engine canaverage over 54mpg on the combined cycle

with CO2 emissions of 124g/km.Higher mileage drivers will find the premium

needed to get a 1.4-litre diesel engine worth-while thanks to the remarkable 64mpg and116g/km CO2 output.

Hyundai subjected its products to the harshestscrutiny when it made them good enough tocompete in the mainstream.

At the top end of the supermini market, suc-cess and failure are decided by the finest mar-gins but the i20 stands up to close inspectionvery well. In three-door form, it looks like moreof the same which should be good news forHyundai’s bottom line.

CHRYSLERSEBRING CABRIOLET

PEUGEOT 308GT THP 175

FACTSCAR: Peugeot 308 GT THP 175PRICES: £20,895 - on the roadINSURANCE GROUP: 14ECO2 EMISSIONS: 180g/kmPERFORMANCE: 0-60mph 8s/Max Speed 140mphFUEL CONSUMPTION: (com-bined) 37.1mpgSTANDARD SAFETY FEATURES:seven airbags / ABS & EBD / ESPstability control

AS long as you don’t go expecting aproper hot hatch, the Peugeot 308 GTTHP 175 shouldn’t disappoint. It’s agreat engine allied to one of the morecomfortable and sophisticated familyhatches around. If you like a car thatfeels bigger than it is and doesn’texpect you to try too hard, look no fur-ther.

The 1.6-litre turbocharged power-plant is one of the best installations ofits type. There’s a smooth surge oftorque available across a broad range, with none of that bog and surge char-acteristic that afflicts many tur-bocharged engines. You may well haveexperienced it in the 207 GTi THP 175and while the significantly bigger 308can’t match the 207’s sprinting ability,it’ll still get to 60mph in 8 seconds andkeep accelerating to 140mph.

The 308 GT THP 175 looks a littlemore focused than its humblerbrethren courtesy of a lower ride

height. Couple that with a loweredfront bumper panel and a rear spoilerand you end up with a car that has alittle more attitude. The 308 is nevergoing to look like a lithe low riderthough, the taller than average rooflinebeing used to good effect in creating aroomy and airy interior. The long frontoverhang of the 308 creates a wedge-shaped profile that brings a further

sporty element to the car’s shape andassists in pedestrian safety. Those famil-iar with the Peugeot 207 supermini willfind plenty they recognise in the 308but the key differences on the largercar are the prominent V-shaped bonnetthat extends down from the base ofthe A-pillars on a raised plain and thehuge oblong foglights. The rear of the308 has more of a bulbous look to it,

helping to maximise luggage space thatruns to 430 litres and can be extendedto 1,398 litres by folding the rear seats.

The interior takes a sober but classyapproach with the GT adding an alu-minium gear knob and pedal set. Itfeels notably more upmarket than theinside of the old 307 and even morespacious. The GT features quite liberaluse of chrome and expensive-looking

plastics with the lighter colour optionsproving particularly eye-catching. Themiddle section of the dash slopes downinto the centre console, bringing itscontrols closer to the driver and creat-ing a snug cockpit effect but you sit along way back from the base of thesteeply raked windscreen with a hugeexpanse of dashboard to look outacross. This, combined with the 308’slong front overhang, may present prob-lems when manoeuvring but the A-pil-lars, a constant impediment to the dri-ver’s view in the 307, appear muchthinner for improved visibility.

Features include power steering, remote control central locking withdeadlocks, electric front windows, asteering column adjustable for reachand rake, a CD player, height adjust-ment for both front seats, a trip com-puter and electrically operated doormirrors. Air conditioning, body-colouredmirror housings and door handles, alloywheels with low profile tyres and ESPstability control are also standard.Peugeot hasn’t skimped on safety kitand there are seven airbags included. There’s also anti-lock brakes with brake-force distribution and brake assist.

YOU’VE got your sporty little convert-ibles and your big cruising convertiblesand the Sebring Cabriolet falls verymuch into the latter category.

It’s quite a size, being based on theMondeo-rivalling Sebring saloon, andit’s about as lively as a student on aSunday morning.

The way to appreciate this car is as alarge, comfy vehicle with a removableroof, a low price and a certain degreeof exclusivity. If that prospect soundsattractive, the Sebring Cabriolet is wortha look and you might be moreAmerican than you think.

THE PRACTICALITIESWith the hood down, the SebringCabriolet is a fairly handsome thing.

he brash front end with the heftychromed grille is still something that willdeter the introverted, but the gently ris-ing belt line and the steeply raked wind-screen give the Sebring a raffish look.

It doesn’t gel quite so well with thehood in place, this model sharing withits predecessor a rather distended pos-terior. There’s room in the 356-litre bootfor a couple of golf bags but the softtop roof steals a lot of space when it’slowered.

BEHIND THE WHEELWere fuel bills as inconsequential asthey are in the States, the SebringCabriolet 2.7 would undoubtedly bethe plum pick of the range.

Powered by a V6 petrol engine thatgenerates a lazy 185bhp, it’s mated to asix-speed automatic gearbox and makesa great cruising car for those not partic-ularly enthralled by performance or han-dling and more interested in topping upa tan.

As it stands, however, the majority ofUK buyers who do choose a SebringCabriolet will instead opt for the 2.0-

litre diesel option. This 138bhpVolkswagen engine is far from the mostrefined oil-burner we’ve come acrossand although it is certainly punchywhen it gets into its stride, it doesn’tseem the ideal engine for this sort ofcar.

VALUE FOR MONEYTwo models are sold and both are verywell equipped.

The 2.0-litre CRD Limited model thatwill prove more popular comes as stan-dard with heated front seats, a sixspeaker Boston Acoustic stereo, air con-ditioning, a powered boot release, steering wheel-mounted audio controls, power folding and heated door mirrors,ESP stability control and a tyre pressuremonitoring system.

If you’re really serious about music, or

just easily bored, then the optionalMyGIG music server and sat nav systemwill tempt.

COULD I LIVE WITH ONE?Big sales in its home market mean thatthe Chrysler Sebring Cabriolet has noth-ing to prove over here. Some would saythat this is just as well but the car doeshave its appeal for buyers who are morein tune with their American side.

For not a whole lot of money, it’s abig impressive-looking convertible andover here, hardly anyone else will haveone.

If you’re unconcerned with the finerpoints of handling or the intricacies ofcabin quality but want comfort, lots oftoys and space for four, the SebringCabriolet is a decent left-field option.

RENAULT was never about to let itsClio fall behind the pace setters inthe supermini market.

The foundations of the third gen-eration Clio have always been strongand they remain so today. Renaulthas largely left them alone and con-centrated on finessing the windowdressing of the latest models.

The Clio Mk III was always a bigcar in the supermini class but thisfacelifted model is even bigger.

At 4,027mm, it’s 41mm longerthan the pre-facelift model and thatextra length is utilised in making theClio appear lower, leaner and morestreamlined. This isn’t one of thosefacelifts that leaves everyone at a lossas to what exactly has changed.

The front end of the Clio ismarkedly more aggressive with the sharp lines of theair-intake and the headlights combined with the thin, smirking grille. It’s a look that debuted on theMegane family hatch and it gives the Clio a far morepurposeful look, even in its non-sporting forms.

The interior was also upgraded with some relocat-ing of the minor controls to increase user-friendliness.Higher spec models now get a soft touch dash withthe satellite navigation screen integrated into it.

Renault is keen to highlight its most fuel efficientClio models, making it easier for customers to pickthem out and does so with its ECO2 branding. The

1.2 and 1.2 TCe petrol engines as well as two of thediesels qualify for ECO2 status because of their lowemissions and fuel economy. The 86 and 106bhpdiesel models both emit less than 120g/km of CO2,giving owners significant tax advantages as well asthe opportunity to do their bit for the environment.

The Clio’s strengths will remain its spacious interior, strong engine range and high quality feel. The latestmodels make a number of worthwhile improvementsthat increase the desirability of the package but withits core strengths, the Clio was a top superminibefore and it’s a top supermini now.

newsTRYING to find a parking space can getup drivers’ noses – but plans are beingmade to make the ordeal less odorous.

The smell of car parks is putting off asmany as a third of drivers from usingthem, a survey by car park company NCPfound.

So the firm is now using new technolo-gy to produce pleasant smells in the stair-wells of some of its busiest car parks.

Aromas such as roses, freshly-bakedbread and cut grass will exude from stair-wells in London, Birmingham, Leeds andCardiff.

Of the 2,000 people polled, two inthree said stairwells were the worst-smelling part of car parks, with one inthree associating these areas with thesmell of urine.

NCP chief executive Andrew Potter said:

“We are committed to offering our cus-tomers a pleasant and positive experiencein our car parks and we fully recognisethat unpleasant smells could drive cus-tomers away.

“As such, by introducing pleasantsmells, we are following through on ourcommitment to improving the customerexperience and providing greater value formoney.’’

VAUXHALL have been granted ahuge degree of liberty in their stylingof the Astra by the success of the restof their more versatile product lines.

For every Meriva or Zafira thecompany sells to the family motorist,a potential Astra driver wantssomething with sleeker styling. Thefive-door Astra is a very neat piece ofpenmanship but the equivalentlypriced three-door Sport Hatch modelknocks it into next week. Many of thedesign cues remain, as the two carsare, after all, built on the sameplatform.

The broad hips, the high windowline and the family-look front end arelargely carried over, with thethree-door merely accentuating thesedetails.

Built alongside the five-door cars atGeneral Motors' Antwerp plant inBelgium, the three-door, costing from£16,685, is some 39mm longer and15mm lower, resembling the GTCconcept car shown at the 2003Geneva Show.

Naturally a few of the details weretoned down for production. Thelights are a little more conventionaland the concept car's frameless doorshave been deemed too costly forseries production. Vauxhall has alsotweaked the latest Astra's cosmetics alittle, with sharper-looking front andrear lights, a revised front bumper, more chrome splashed about thegrille and the choice of piano black ormatt chrome interior finishing. SportHatch models also get a honeycombfront grille.

There's a choice of four petrol andthree diesel engines. The line-up kicksoff with a modest 115PS 1.6-litre unitbelow a 140PS 1.8-litre engine. Thepokey 180PS 1.6-litre turbochargedunit is also offered although this isresoundingly trumped by the 240bhp2.0T unit that features in the range-topping VXR performance variant.

Even the entry-level 1.6-litre engine isworth considering, using as it doesthe Twinport technology already seenon the Corsa.

Three diesel engines are available: a1.7-litre 100bhp unit, plus beefy120bhp and 150bhp 1.9-litre power-plants developed by Fiat. As would beexpected, all three meet the Euro IVemissions regulations which meansthat business users won't have to paythe onerous three per cent 'benefit inkind' surcharge that drivers of non-compliant cars get tapped up for.

In keeping with the car's name, only the sporty SXI, SRi, Design andVXR trim levels are offered, all fittedas standard with lowered sportssuspension and alloy wheels. There'salso a 'Panoramic Windscreen' option, one of the year's most talked aboutautomotive innovations, which for

around £850 extra, gives you a hugesection of glass stretching from thetop of the bonnet over thepassengers' heads.

Vauxhall claims that rear seat spaceis well up to par for two adults. Theyjust didn't specify what size. The rearseat is a conventional three-abreastbench with a practical 60:40 splitsystem offered as standard or thealternative 40:20:40 layout availableas an option.

Luggage room is slightly hamperedby that rakish roofline but given thecavernous amount of space in theback of the five-door Astra, it's hardto see carrying capacity being a rea-son to grumble. Or much else cometo that...

BLACKPOOL Honda will holding thebusiness launch of the new HondaInsight Hybrid car at the SolarisCentre in Blackpool on Tuesday, April7.

This will be an ideal opportunity tosee and experience the unique char-acteristics of this innovative car andidentify how the Insight can save thefleet user hundreds of pounds inrunning costs.

The new Insight is a stylish andpractical family hatchback offeringboth the private and business userssignificant savings on their annualmotoring costs and all at the price ofa conventional family hatchback. TheHonda Insight significantly under cutsthe Toyota Prius both on initial priceand running cost over three years.

Being a fleet dealership, BlackpoolHonda with the new Honda Insightcan offer the business user significantsavings in income tax, fuel, road taxand residual values compared withsimilar conventionally powered vehi-cles. It also does its bit for the envi-ronment with low emissions andexcellent fuel economy.

The engine is a 1.3-litre unit basedon the one in the Civic Hybrid andfeaturing a series of neat innovations.During deceleration, the cylinders are

closed off to boost efficiency andnumerous modifications have beenmade to reduce friction inside theengine. The petrol unit might onlyhave 87bhp but it is assisted by a14bhp electric motor driven by powerfrom a bank of nickel hydridebatteries under the boot floor. Theseare recharged by energy reclaimedfrom the wheels when braking orcoasting and, under acceleration.

The car returns 64.2mpg on thecombined cycle with emissions of101g/km which is pretty impressive. Ithas an Eco Assist mode button thatwhen depressed reduces the throttleresponse to smooth out the engine’swork load and cuts back on theefforts of the climate control systemto achieve better economy. Honda’sInsight is a car that not only aims tocut its emissions through advancedtechnological solutions.

MINI MPV

Room for the family

uusseedd ccaarrssYour essential Friday guide to buying second-hand vehicles

The Gazette

The mini-MPV People Carrier is oneof the motor industry’s most profitablesuccess stories. Take one conventionalFamily Hatchback, then carefully inflateto the point where it can accommo-date some of the versatility of a large,fully-sized MPV People Carrier.

In all but a few of the cleverer, mod-els, you’re still restricted to the samefive-seater carrying capacity you’d findin an ordinary Family Hatchback. Butthen, the designers reckon it’s not thenumber of seats you have, it’s whatyou can do with them that counts.Expect in most cases to be able to fold, slide and remove completely to yourheart’s content. Expect also to find analmost bewildering number of storagesolutions and that slightly higher-setseating position for that ‘real’ MPVfeel.

CHEAP & CHEERFULIt wasn’t until the Summer of 1999

that competitors to the RenaultMegane Scenic got their hastily-designed MPV rivals to market. Thefirst of these, Vauxhall’s Zafira, was togive the French maker a nasty shock, managing as it did to incorporateseven, rather than just five, seats into abodyshell which was approximately thesame size. Briefly, it looked as ifVauxhall might net a landslide of salesbut as it turned out, the mini-MPV

market split comfortably into thosewho wanted more than five seats andthose who didn’t.

AFFORDABLEMID-RANGERS

By 2000, the mini-MPV market wasgetting seriously crowded. The marketleader, Renault’s second generationScenic, got a new common rail dCi

diesel in the Spring and a trendy RX-44WD version in July. By then, what wasto prove the biggest thorn in theRenault’s side was on sale, Citroen’sXsara Picasso. These two cars were bynow taking the lion’s share of thesales, with only Vauxhall’s Zafira get-ting close. This car had received amuch improved new engine range forthe 2001 model year.

DESIRABLE BUTPOTENTIALLY PRICEYThe Vauxhall Zafira and the Citroën

Xsara Picasso were the two big sellersin the market but Ford’s C-MAX haskept them both honest and makes abetter used buy. Also look out for laterC4 Picasso models, especially in themore useful long wheelbase version. The Volkswagen Touran has become a

little more distinguished in its styling inrecent years while the Renault Scenicremains one of the best used buys.

WHAT TO LOOK FORThanks to the more compact size of

the typical mini-MPV, scratches, scrapes, parking dents, bashed wingmirrors, grazed or split bumpers andkerbed alloy wheels are less of a prob-lem than with larger People Carriers. The big, wide-opening doors are proneto knocks and dents however.

Mechanically, as ever, you’ll need tosee a full service history. Beware ofsmoky diesels. Older cars may sufferfrom sticky gearboxes, broken wipermotors, oil leaks, automatic gearboxproblems, poor hot starting, wornsuspension, clutch and gear linkagedifficulties and so on.
