Festive greetings from all at MottisfontAbbey!

We hope that any plans andpreparations for time with family andfriends are progressing just as you’dwant them, and that visions of brusselsprouts are not keeping you awake atnight!

By the time you read this, our Christmas offer will beup and running at the Abbey, with lots of decorationsaround the theme of "T’was the night beforeChristmas". As I write, the florists are concoctinggorgeous displays on every mantelpiece, many treesare being decorated, and our Mottisfont Makers aresetting up delightful little scenes in each room withtiny mice carrying out a range of festive tasks.

There’s a fantastic family trail around the groundsthat will get the youngsters nicely tired out, and asalways some tempting treats in the cafés should youwant to warm up afterwards. Of course, the shop isfully geared up to help you out with a bit of stressfree shopping, so do come on in, even if it’s just for awalk to work off some of that Christmas pudding. We’re open every day from 10am until 4pm apartfrom Christmas Eve and Christmas Day.

We’re looking forward to the carols around thenativity in the orchard on Spearywell Road on theevening of Friday 14th December, and hope to seemany of you there. As usual, our lovely bakers willbe providing mince pies to go with the mulled wineand hot chocolate brought over by St. Andrew’s, andI’m sure we’ll all be in fine voice once the vocalchords have been warmed up by a few libations!

We’re starting the new year with a brand newexhibition of paintings and drawings by NormanThelwell, including many works that have never beenexhibited before. As well as his plump ponies, therewill be many cartoons and satirical works, as well assome more of his stunning local landscapes. Hereally loved the countryside of the Test Valley, andspent as much of his free time as possible travellingaround it in his camper van (very wise, so he couldmake a cup of tea wherever he was), setting up hiseasel to make beautiful watercolours of the viewsaround him.

The new exhibition opens on Saturday 5th January, and will be just the thing to chase away the postChristmas blues.

May the New Year bring health and happiness,

With all best wishes,

Louise

Festive fun…The Night Before ChristmasUntil Sunday 6 January, 11 am-4pmThis year, scenes from the muchloved poem ‘TheNight Before Christmas’ will be brought to life aroundthe house and grounds. Follow pathways illuminatedby decorated lanterns to discover Father Christmas’ssleigh in front of the house; and, of course, Dasher,Dancer, Prancer and Vixen – all crafted from willow.Inside the house, oversized books and setdressedrooms will take you through each verse of the poem, and there are little mice hidden in secret corners. Each room will be enhanced by luxurious, traditionallystyled decoration and sparkling trees.Families can follow in Father Christmas’s footstepsaround the grounds with a fun, active trail – great forwarming up on cold days.

In the gallery…Thelwell: Laughter and LandscapesSaturday 5 January – Monday 22 AprilA welcome return to the world of Norman Thelwell. There’ll be old favourites on show, including theantics of iconic characters Penelope and hermischievous pony, Kipper. The exhibition alsoincludes other satirical cartoons, with astute andamusing observations on country life, andbreathtaking landscape art. Some of this work hasnever been publically shown before, including aselection of Thelwell’s early sketches.

In the gardens…The winter garden glows with brilliantly colouredwinter bark from dogwood and ornamental bramble, while berries, fruit and late and earlyfloweringperennials such as bergenia and hellebores alsoprovide colour during the shortest days of the year.Sweetscented daphnes and winterfloweringhoneysuckles, wintersweet and witch hazel allcontribute to a subtle fragrance in the crisp cold air.

Delicate drifts of snowdrops will begin to appearbeside our waterways from January.

On the wider estate…Essential forestry works are being carried out acrossthe estate over the winter season. These includethinning operations to allow the remaining trees togrow to maturity and the felling of trees to improvelight conditions along our ride networks to improvewildlife habitats. Please take note of safety signsand path closures; they are for your safety and thesafety of the forest workers. We will try to keepdisruption to a minimum.

Greetings all! What a challenge....’Thoughts’ thatencompass all that unfolds over the next twomonths...the waiting season of Advent with itsheightening anticipation week by week, the festival ofChristmas itself, the drama as 2018 slips into 2019.January’s end will herald early spring and Easterbeyond that. You might reasonably assume I amapproaching this from a religious point of view, eventhough I sidestepped Christingle, Epiphany, and thejourney to Lent. Yet, might it not equally well be theagenda of any selfrespecting retailer preparing hisworkforce at this time of year. Can anyone escapethe hype that conditions us both consciously andsubconsciously in growing intensity from the end ofAugust and beyond. For many it is the harbinger of‘seasonal overload’, fraught with pressure, stress, anxiety and deadlines. Spectacular expectations areset by the media, by advertising, and by longstanding traditions that MUST be met lest wedisappoint. And who do we fear disappointing?Well, above all, I think it is ourselves. So, wepromise TOO much, fret about how to finance it, andrush about in a frenzy to build the perfect Christmas, and sadly completely miss the point! So often theglitz, the glamour, and even greed may subordinatethe life changing reality of Christmas. We’ve heard itall before; we hear it every year.

Now, it’s not for me to preach to anyone about howto do it differently; I’m as brainwashed as the next.Ah, do I hear some of you musing that I am surelybrainwashed....by faith!? (In truth, that would be ablessing). However, I do believe that by stoppingand reflecting regularly in the weeks ahead on thetrue meaning of Christmas, that one may becomemore spiritually grounded to face the madness thatensnares us. Likewise, remembering that for othersChristmas brings a different type of stress focuses uson a more human and compassionate perspective. It may turn up the volume on loneliness, loss, grief, nostalgia, any emotional burdens, social problemsand all forms of neediness.

Maybe treating yourself to the best Christmas ever isas simple as opening yourself to Advent’spreparation. It’s there in the Gospel, and the CofEwebsite, as is Epiphany for that matter. There’splenty there to reflect upon and inspire us. And whatabout mindfulness? Mindfulness has apparently nowestablished itself in the repertoire of selfhelpstrategies. One definition of Mindfulness is "thebasic human ability to be fully present, aware ofwhere we are and what we’re doing, and not overlyreactive or overwhelmed by what’s going on aroundus." (https://www.mindful.org/whatismindfulness/)

Combine it with prayerfulness and it may just be theperfect antidote to the Christmas ‘HyperactivitynoNativity’ syndrome. (I made that up myself...and I’mwell chuffed with it. Just joking!) But let’s not forget

the original meaning of mindfulness, which is "to stayaware and be heedful of our responsibilities." At thistime especially, those responsibilities are to lovedones, friends, to the needy, to ourselves, and to God.Maybe in this way we come closer to the profoundsense of awe, the joy, the peace, and the hope heldin the mesmerising story of the coming of God as awee baby in a stable, no less.

And finally, I thought I’d share this moment....familiarto many I’m sure:

“Granna, Santa Claus isn’t real is he? He can’t be,”asks my granddaughter, citing her reasons for doubt, all quite logical to be fair. Somewhere deep insideme my heart sinks, but thankfully I’m driving andshe’s in the back seat, so misses any nonverbalclues. She’s only 5 years old! Wasn’t I asking thesame questions at 10 years of age? Things weredifferent then. So, what does one say? What cameout, no doubt inviting criticism, was:

“I know what you mean, darling. I’ve had thoseworrying thoughts myself, but what I think is that its aspecial kind of magic that noone can understand, but it doesn’t mean it’s not real. I don’t know howSanta can be in so many houses delivering tochildren all over the world in one night either! Butwhen you believe the magic, and its special powers, then mysteriously and amazingly it becomes real. But you must believe it first. It’s called having faith.“Silence, no more was said, for now anyway.

And it suddenly struck me, not for the first time... thebeautiful innocence... and the wonderful coincidentanalogy! Matthew 18 v3.

Please join us at St. Andrew's for the Advent andChristmas services listed in this edition and in theparish Christmas card. Let’s get together and fill ourchurch when the world about us seems to be goingslightly crazy, and find peace there. Have awonderful Christmas, and happy new year toeveryone.

Great news about the Carpentry and TailoringWorkshops we set up many years ago and havecontinued to fund. Having successfully trainedmany students they are about to become selfsupporting. Tools for Self Reliance, a charity basedin Netley, is preparing tool kits which will be sent outearly next year to Hima and Kilembe. These kits willallow the workshops to be selfsufficient in thefuture. This is a very positive development andcause for much rejoicing.

#FollowTheStar

The Star of Bethlehem, also called the Christmas Star, revealed the birth of Jesus to the Biblical Magi, and laterled them to Bethlehem. The star leads them to Jesus'home in the town, where they worship him and give himgifts. The wise men are then given a divine warning notto return to Herod so they return home by a differentroute. Many Christians see the star as a miraculous signto mark the birth of the Christ (or Messiah).

"For many of us, Christmas brings up so many emotions, memories and expectations. We have one nativity story, but it can seem like we all have very differentChristmases.

"For you it might be a time of joy and togetherness. Orperhaps it’s all about planning and todo lists. Manyothers can find it a sad and lonely time – nagged by thefeeling that your Christmas is not like those ‘perfect’ oneswe see in the media.

"But just like the unexpected assortment of people whowere invited to meet the babyJesus, #FollowTheStar doesn’t ask you to be perfect. Itsays: come just as you are to take the lifechangingChristmas journey."

Archbishops Justin Welby & John Sentamu

This Christmas, everyone across the Deanery is invitedto create a star for their garden (or windows) – angelsand shepherds would also be welcome. This will remindeveryone that Christmas is coming – and that Jesus, theSon of God, was born on earth. So that this idea canhappen in all parishes, please don’t put any angels orstars out until Friday 7th December and please ensurethat they are put away by the end of Sunday 6th January.
