With August coming to an end, we are speeding to the end of term 3 with no sign of slowing down. This week we have over 100 of our

Year 10’s are out on Work Experience and at the end of this term we send off another excited group of students to visit Japan.

I would like to congratulate our Year 10 students who have organised their own work experience placement and completed the

compulsory online modules so that they could access this great opportunity. We hope they are all enjoying themselves out in the

workforce and many of their mentor teachers are looking forward to visiting this week to see how they are going. I have no doubt that our

staff will bring back many positive stories from employers, praising our students as excellent ambassadors for Mount Clear College.

Thank you to Scott Brown and his team of mentor staff who have supported students in preparations prior to heading out to their

placements this week.

Thank you to School Council for supporting our staff Professional Development Day on Monday 15 August, which was seen by staff as a

very valuable opportunity to work in teams to audit our current curriculum in line with the new Victorian Curriculum. Teams have

commenced work on the necessary changes to meet the requirements of this new Curriculum, and will continue to do so throughout term 4

in readiness for the mandated implementation date of day one of next year.

Canadian Recreation Reserve Launch

On Friday 5 August our Leadership Students welcomed Premier Andrews to our Earth Ed centre where we hosted the launch of the

Canadian Recreation Reserve. Our Assistant Principal Jenny Bromley is working very closely with Parks Victoria along with 20 of our

students to become Canadian Park Youth Ambassadors and working with Parks Victoria in an action based project. We received some

wonderful feedback from Parks Victoria regarding our Student Leaders “The future is looking bright when we see such an impressive

group of young people, who behaved with such maturity, courtesy and intelligent interest”. Congratulations to all involved in this project

and making our School shine.

Production

Our 2016 College Production of ‘Footloose’ has come to a close and what an outstanding showcase of our staff and students talents.

The cast and crew spent many hours of preparation and rehearsal to bring to life this great classic. Congratulations must go to Rebecca

Koroneos and her team on a fantastic and highly successful production. The show received raved reviews and some wonderful

feedback. Our school council president, Mr Wayne Ward attended the event and shared his feedback “I went along Thursday night to

see the opening performance of ‘Footloose’ by MCC students and thoroughly enjoyed the experience. We are fortunate to have some

very talented young people! I would like to pass on my appreciation of the efforts of all involved in bringing together a high quality

production in which to showcase the school”.

Well done once again to Rebecca and all involved.

VCAL Fundraising efforts

Our VCAL students led by Brendan Johnston have hosted a number of fundraising events over the past month. They have organised a

casual clothes day, cupcake drives and car washes to help support the amazing work Beyondblue do to raise awareness of mental health

in adults and children.

Thank you to everyone at our College for their huge support of our VCAL program, the students and staff really appreciate it. We are

very impressed by the improved organisational skills and great effort by our VCAL students, well done to all.

Mindshop Excellence

The Mindshop Excellence program involves a local business posing a problem to a group of students who spend a week working

in the organisation to develop and present possible solutions. On Friday 19 August Assistant Principal Nicole Quinney and Year

10 Coordinator, Sean Callinan had the privilege of going to the Mindshop Excellence presentation at Federation University. To

say our students made them proud is an understatement! They found Jayde Farrugia, Caitlin Boak & David Owen (Tyrone Jones,

was unfortunately sick and unable to attend) to be truly amazing as they stood up before a group of people including Deans of the

University and presented their project and suggested advice/ideas. They then fielded a whole range of questions from all people

in attendance. The university professionals that the students had worked with during the week, had nothing but praise for our

students as excellent ambassadors for the College.

In addition to this Assistant Principal David Stuchbery also attended the combined Mindshop Excellence presentations at BGT in

the afternoon and our students acquitted themselves admirably in the presence of the other local schools who had been involved at a

variety of workplaces around Ballarat. There were many complimentary comments from schools, employers and parents throughout

their presentation. Thanks to Nicole Quinney on facilitating such a great learning opportunity for the College, this will now become a

regular event within the Year 10 leadership program.

Year 12

As term 3 comes to a close our Year 12 students are working extremely hard to finish of their work requirements and commence

preparations for exams. I would like to congratulate you all on your positive and hardworking approach to your studies and wish you

well in the weeks ahead. Our focus is not on your ATAR score, it is on encouraging you to do your best …….so that you have no

regrets, that you leave secondary education knowing that you made the most of the opportunities available to you, and that you put in

the necessary effort to find out what you can actually achieve if you really give study a ‘serious go’. Good luck, now is the time to go

for it.

Our Pathways team have been working at an intense pace ensuring all Year 12 students have an individual Pathways (proposed

pathways exit) interview and that those planning to go on to further studies have submitted their VTAC application. If your child has

not yet arranged their interview, please contact our Pathways Coordinator Nicole Taylor to arrange this.

The following is an extract from the Senior School Study Skills document placed on Compass by the Senior School Leading Teaching, Ms, Norah Moloney.

Exams for Year 12 commence on Wednesday 26th October with the English exam. That leaves just 5 weeks

of school, two weeks of study break, plus two weeks of revision classes followed by one week of swot-vac:

a total of 10 weeks until the final examination period for Year 12.

SO STUDY AND REVISION FOR YEAR 12 NEEDS TO BE STARTING NOW!!!!!!!

“I would definitely start revising earlier so that I have plenty of time and I don’t get stressed.”

It is worth noting that the times quoted were accurate a week ago. Whilst the information may be stressful for less organised students and their families, there is time to make a difference. In this week’s Mentor class senior school students were reminded of the importance of continuing to develop their resilience and use as many supports as possible to help them develop plans to cope with stressful situations. We know that if we all work together the outcome is always better than if only one of us works on the outcome. I encourage all families to take the time to sit down and plan out the next two months so that we are all on the same page and working together to increase the chances of positive outcomes for our students. Year 7 Report

There is a hype about camp around the Year 7 area!!

The young ‘mounties’ are all set and geared towards their Phillip Island camp. Camp dates are

November the 30th until the 2nd of December. Please have final deposits paid by the

30th of October.

Activities whilst staying at the Phillip Island Adventure Resort include surfing, high ropes,

canoeing and the GIANT swing! Lots of fun to be had.

Green Machine

What’s green machine you ask? This is an initiative to help combat rubbish in our corridors.

Two students from Year 7 home groups are chosen to partake in green machine, cleaning the

corridors after recess and after lunch. The payoff is they then get to come to school in free

dress! We would like to see our Year 7 area spotless and encourage all students to use the

bins and keep our school clean!

The week commencing 22/8 is Science week and the week commencing 29/8 is Literacy and

Numeracy Week

Science week has seen lots of students and staff involved in various activities to promote

these two key learning areas. From paper aeroplanes to paper parachute men, students have

been able to earn points for their houses by participating in activities.

Next week at the College is Literacy and Numeracy week and there are many prizes and

reward points to be won. Get to the library for Kahootz quizzes, letter scrambles and ‘mystery’

word competitions and have fun using your literacy skills! The aim of which is to do activities

in the English and Maths classrooms that will be a bit different from the norm.

State Schools Spectacular

All the best to our Year 7’s who will be participating in the State School’s Spectacular on 10th

September 2016. It is a fantastic show that demonstrates the skills and achievements of many

schools across Victoria and we encourage you to pop along if you get the chance.

NEW Year 8 STUDENT LEADERS: Congratulations to Kaitlynn Jordan and Cailen Bailey for stepping up as Year 8 leaders. Well done! Also con-gratulations to all our Year 8 leaders who have regularly presented and most competently run the Year 8 Mon-day assemblies.

YEAR 7/8 SPORTS REPORT: Congratulations to the Year 7/8 girls Mount Clear College soccer team for making the State Championships.

The Year 7/8 Girls Soccer team defeated Warrnambool College 5-0 in Warrnambool to capture the school's first ever Greater Western Region girl’s soccer pennant. In doing so they join the Senior Girls Cricket and Year 8 Boys Badminton teams in making the SSV State Championships. The girls will make their trip on Thursday September 8 to the Kingston Heath Soccer Complex. The girls showed the benefit of BAS competi-tion and were in control of the game throughout. Warrnambool managed to threaten a couple of times, ena-bling Kira Feeney to show off her skills and courage but for the most part they were on the back foot contend-ing with wave after wave of Mountie attacks. An early injury to key defender Nikita Gribble caused some con-cern but a quick throw in from Yasmin Carrigg sent Katie Cook free along the bye line and she neatly slotted past the keeper. Cook then doubled the lead about five minutes later and it was becoming apparent that Warrnambool could not cope with the purposeful passing of the Mounties and relied on some excellent keeping to keep them in the game. Just before half time Warrnambool conceded a free kick just inside their half and Cook sent a dangerous ball into the box and when the locals could not clear, Yasmin stabbed home for a 3-0 halftime lead. The Mounties had the use of a stiff breeze in the second which made it even more difficult for Warrnambool to threaten and only some desperate keeping prevented a larger final score. Cook completed her hat-trick and Katie Wise rounded off the scoring when she controlled a corner from Cook and smashed her shot past the keeper. Danae Bellingham held firm in the centre of defence and was ably assisted by Charlotte Allan who came on for Gribble. Lilly Johnston and Jess Anderson were their usual calm and composed selves at full back. Yasmin and Kaitlin Wise controlled the centre of the park, Jordy Coburn and Molly Coleman worked hard on the flanks and Shianne Perry provided a useful foil up front for Cook. Bridgette Hobson and Kiara Agnew came on at various stages and slotted in seamlessly wherever needed. The team was well pre-pared and coached by Maddi Edwards and are now excitedly looking forward to their trip to Melbourne on Thursday September 8.

(Author of Report - Mr Dole) Year 7/8 Boys & Girls inter school Basketball team: Last Wednesday (17th August) the Year 7/8 boys and girls teams travelled to the Ballarat Basketball Centre. An average of 6 games were played. The Year 7/8 boys came second to Ballarat High School. Congratulations to the following Year 8 boys on their success – Nash LeSueur, Tor Tor, Will Forte, Allistair Sims, Liam Carroll, Zac Quarrell and Bradley Scott. Apologies if we missed anyone. LITERACY and NUMERACY WEEK: Next week is Literacy & Numeracy week and your happy and enthusiastic literacy team have loads of fun planned. On Monday (29th Aug) Ms Giri will run a competition in the library during recess for students to make as many words as they can from the word "ALPHABETICAL" - (for your information, there are 495 words of 3 letters or more, see if you can come up with them all!) The English KLA will be playing around with Block Out Poetry so keep an eye out for these creative master-pieces. On Thursday Ms Vincent will run a Kahootz quiz in the library at lunchtime Each day there will be a scrambled word posted in the library window at recess. Students needs to collect the word each day, unscramble it and on Friday next week deliver the whole 5 word quote to Ms Giri at lunchtime. First one to come up with the correct quote will win lots of lovely rewards points. Any questions, see Ms Nikki Vincent or Ms Terri Giri.

FIRST AID Please note if your child is feeling sick, has vomited or had diarrhoea please do not send them to school. Allow a

good 24 hrs after last episode before returning to school.

During this term our college staff have been participating in a mindfulness project using yoga as way of preparing

for our busy day of teaching. We have been meeting at the language centre early on Thursday mornings learning

about the benefits of Yoga for stretching and relaxing the mind.

Thank you to Tracey Hargraves (Ex staff) from Absolute Yoga for giving up her precious time to teach us Yoga and

our College Principal Lynita Taylor for recognising the importance of mindfulness for staff.

AIME provides a dynamic

educational Program that gives Indigenous high school stu-

dents the skills, opportunities, belief and confidence to fin-

ish school at the same rate as their peers. AIME has proven

to dramatically improve the chances of Indigenous kids

finishing school. AIME also connects students with post

Year 12 opportunities, including further education and em-

ployment.

Across the country, AIME delivers a range of different pro-

grams. The Core Program targets local Indigenous high

school students who attend schools that are able to visit an

AIME partner university campus on a weekly basis.

School (IAESS) is an annual event, established

and funded by Engineering Aid Australia (a non-

profit organisation). For the summer school in

January 2017, we are looking for 20 Aboriginal

National Asthma Week 1-7 September:

The theme for National Asthma Week 2016 is Become a Better Breather. National Asthma Week coincides with the beginning of spring and as pollens are a known trigger for asthma, this is an

excellent time to ensure your child’s asthma is well controlled. Sections of the Asthma Australia website that can help with asthma management include: Take the Asthma Control Test to see if you could make improvements to help your child become a better breather. Manage allergies often linked with asthma, including allergic rhinitis (hay fever). Did you know? 90% of people with asthma use their medications incorrectly. Check your child’s technique to see if they are getting full benefit from their medication.

Regular review of your child’s asthma with your GP and pharmacist will help them to become a better breather. Need help with your child’s asthma? Contact our Asthma Assist line on 1800 ASTHMA (1800 278 462) and talk to one of our friendly Asthma Health Professionals. Asthma Management in Winter and Spring: Asthma is one of the most common chronic childhood conditions, affecting 1 in every 10 children in Australia. Emergency admissions and hospitalisations peak during the winter for children with asthma and flare-ups are often more prevalent during the winter and spring. Good management however can help children with asthma and their carers get through this tricky time of year with more confidence. Here are a few tips for parents and carers: make an annual appointment for an asthma

review by your child’s doctor update your child’s Asthma Plan at the start of

each year and provide a copy to the school talk to the teacher and other key staff about

your child’s asthma – their usual triggers, symptoms and medication

provide an in-date blue reliever puffer and spacer for use at school (clearly labelled with child’s name and date of birth)

help your child understand the importance of taking their preventer medication every day, as prescribed

ask their doctor about having a flu vaccination encourage hand washing and covering one’s

mouth when coughing to help prevent the spread of germs

School sports and asthma: Physical activity acts as a major trigger in up to 90%

of people with asthma. Exercise Induced Bronchocon-striction (EIB), commonly known as exercise induced asthma, is the temporary narrowing of the lower airways, occurring after vigorous exercise. People with poorly controlled asthma are at a higher risk of EIB due to the sensitive nature of their airways. This may result in episodes of coughing, wheezing, a feeling of chest tightness/discomfort or shortness of breath, often worsening 5-10 minutes after exercise. To ensure your child can safely participate in sports and exercise at school, the first step is to make sure their asthma is well controlled. If your child is requiring their reliever medication more than twice a week, it is a good idea to see their GP for a review as this may indicate poorly controlled asthma. Also provide the school with an Asthma Plan from the doctor, particu-larly before a sport carnival or excursion. The plan will include any instructions for EIB (e.g. use of their asthma reliever prior to physical activity). You can help them check that they are using their asthma devices correctly by watching our videos on the Asthma Australia website. Asthma app: The new Asthma Australia asthma app brings together a raft of resources in one convenient place to help you ensure your child’s asthma is managed as well as possible. Sections include information on medications, device technique videos and Asthma First Aid in an emergency. The app is free at the iTunes store (Android coming soon). For secondary aged students: Young people with asthma Asthma Australia has established a Facebook page, Young People with Asthma – Australia, to provide the latest information and research for these young people and their supporters. We recently commenced posting profiles to share young people’s stories and experiences. Refer to the page for details if you have a child who might want to share their asthma story. We are also setting up a Q&A function where an Asthma Educator will respond to young people’s questions through the page. For primary aged students: Asthma Kids Looking for a way to help your child understand more about their asthma or about a friend with asthma? Asthma Kids is an online, interactive tool to help prima-ry school aged chil-dren understand what it’s like to have asthma and what they can do to help. Check it out at

Origami for Sadako Recently some of our Year 7 and 8 classes made Origami Cranes in memory of Sadako – the Japanese girl who died of radiation poisoning from the bombing of Hiroshima in World War 2. Matthew Flind of 7G has family in Japan, and they kindly placed them in the Peace Park in Hiroshima for us. The memorial has thousands of cranes sent every year to promote nuclear disarmament. Thank you to all those students who made the cranes, and to Matthew and his family for the logistics.

Year 11 Psychology excursion to the Ballarat Art Gallery Thursday the 4th August saw both Year 11 Psychology classes head into the Ballarat Art Gallery to investigate visual perception principles in use. The group spent many hours looking at various works discussing the techniques used by artists to give depth and realism to their art. Students were able to apply their knowledge to real world examples and use the works of art to describe pictorial depth cues, explaining how artists use these techniques to create amazing pieces. We also looked at the use of Gestalt Principles in the creation of unified pictures. The opportunity to apply theory to practice was enjoyed by all the students and they came away with a better understanding of visual perception. The Ballarat Art Gallery is an amazing local resource for the local community and many of the students had their first experience of the collection that they house.

Year 12 VCAL Students

During this term our Year 11 VCAL Work Related Skills students , participated in a fundraising and awareness campaign for Beyondblue. We worked together as a group to make and ice over 300 blue cupcakes and sold them for $2 at recess and lunchtime. The Regent cinemas in Ballarat kindly donated 18 gold class tickets, these were given in pairs to students who picked up a cupcake with a gold star under it. Thankyou to all the amazing staff at Mount Clear College for your support of this project and your ongoing support of VCAL at our college. We also had cupcakes donated to us from The Little Cupcake Shoppe, Beechworth Bakery, The Turrett Café, The Golden Nuggett Bakery, Rosenharts Cake Shop and Brumby's Bakery. Thankyou to all of these business for their support.


Year 12 Health and Well-being Day. On Thursday July 28

th, while Year 10 and 11 were selecting their subjects, the Year 12 students visit-

ed ACU to participate in a Health and Well-being day. Students were given the opportunity to have a look at the University and participate in activities such as Music and Art Therapy, Yoga and Team building. A special thank you must go to Ms. Nicole Taylor and Fionna Wooller for organising the day. Comments from the day included: “It was a refreshing change to have the focus on health and wellbeing rather than studying and dead-lines.” “The day changed the way I felt especially after the meditation. It was like I didn’t know what relaxed felt like.” “It was pretty good. Lecturers were nice, they spoke clearly and the facilities were really nice. It looks like a great university to start your career in”. “The day at ACU was a great way to take some time out from study and get reminded about all the positive ways to deal with stress. This has been extremely helpful leading up to the exams.” “Enjoyed the Yoga because it was a new experience” “The healthy food was surprisingly good, with heaps of variety and flavour” “It was good to learn ways to de stress especially so close to the exams.” “I really liked being able to do the Art therapy, it was something I hadn’t tried as a way to relax.” “I actually really liked making the pasta towers with my team. It was something we don’t get to do of-ten – working in a team- and the competitiveness was awesome.” “Having a day to relax and not worry about classes was good for all of us.” “Relaxing and refreshing day. That helped relieve a lot of stress. Amazing food!” “I loved all of the exercises we were shown, it has been really helpful leading up to the exams.”

Year 12 Health and Well-being Day


As part of the World Challenge program students in Years 9 & 10 are expected to develop leadership skills and participate in group and individual fundraising to help them achieve their goal of travelling to Nepal in November of 2017. This 28 night trip will be planned and directed by the students before and during the expedition. They will be in charge of where they stay, the level of difficulty of the two treks they will participate in, transport, food and they will also work in a community for 5 or 6 days either teaching or working to help the local people. On Sunday they battled rain, wind and cold to run the BBQ at Masters in Wen-

douree. It was fantastic to see them working so well together and having fun.

2016 State School Spectacular

HOUSE UPDATE

Mount Clear House Update During the dreary cold and wet weather there have been

opportunities for students to get involved in extra activities based

indoors, such as quiz competitions, science competitions and

literacy week. On the occasional fine weather Tuesday at

lunchtime there has been a Pop-Up House Competition where

students can compete against others in a fun and friendly manner.

Challenges have included Gridiron throw, Soccer penalty shootout,

and Basketball 3 point competition. Others will follow so students

need to keep an eye on Compass news feeds for information.

Inter-school sports are still running strong thanks to Mr. Dole and

his huge commitment. Students that represent the school in any

sport team earns valuable House Points. Also students representing

the school in any official capacity such as in the Cabaret or State

School Spectacular also earn points for their House.

Barkly House currently have a lead over Canadian House but only

by a small margin. The big movers have been Lalor House and

even Currawong House has made a significant comeback thanks to

the large number of students involved in the recent school

production.

I highly recommend that students get involved in any extra-

curricular activities that are offered at school, both for the

enjoyment of participation and to earn House Points.

This year’s Spectacular will be held at Hisense Arena on Saturday 10 September, with two shows at 1pm and 6:30pm. The three-hour Spec-tacular will be filmed for broadcast by Channel 7. For a fun, family entertainment experience, and to cheer on our students from the audience, be quick to secure discounted tickets. Talented young skaters, musicians, dancers and singers will feature on stage, while many other students will work behind the scenes, gaining unique, on-the-job, professional experience. This program, run by the Department of Education and Training, helps to

develop each student’s performance skills, discipline, perseverance,

cooperation and confidence under the training of industry professionals.

Run Ballarat

Run Ballarat participation raffle For students who enter into Run Ballarat as a part of the Mount Clear College team they will go into the running to win some amazing prizes. How can I enter?

1. Sing up to Run Ballarat as a part of the Mount Clear College team. 2. Take a photo or screen shot of your registration 3. Show your photo to a staff member in the staffroom (i.e. year 7 students go to the year 7

staffroom) 4. The staff member will note down your name

What do you get?? Every entry you will receive positive reward points to be used at the next pop up shot. Your name will al-so go into the raffle to be drawn out at the next assembly after Run Ballarat you’re your chance to win the below prizes.

Wednesdays after school from 3:30 pm to 4:30 pm in the library.

All are welcome to come and play or learn how to play.

Lost Property

NB Lost Property will be kept in First Aid (next to the SHAAC). First Aid operates between 10am and 2.30pm

Monday to Thursday there will be a staff

member in the library to provide students

with the opportunity to do supervised

study. Study Hall takes place in the Library

from 3.30pm to 4.30pm.
