Terms 3 & 4 Calendar: Weeks 10 & 1-3 2017
From the Principal Positive Phone Calls
Each term, classroom teachers select several students who have demonstrated commitment to improve their learning and follow the
RACER rules. These students received a special certificate for their excellent effort and parents were informed with a Principal Positive
Phone Call. Congratulations to these students on their hard work in Term 3!
School Events
Mount Kilcoy students have had lots of school events to keep them busy during the last few weeks. Thank you to the students, families
and staff who came along to our Fancy Dress Ball. A huge amount of effort went into creating costumes and practising dances. It’s
just wonderful to see our children enjoying performing in front of their loved ones! Once again, a big thanks to Mr Triggs for being our
creative and energetic DJ and to our P&C for their help with organising our delicious supper. I would also like to wish our Valley
Champions Netball and Football teams who compete tomorrow at Woodford and our Mathematics teams who compete at Kilcoy on
Friday the best of luck. Go Mount Kilcoy!
Staffing Changes for Term 4
In Term 4, we will be welcoming back Mrs Jo Smith from maternity leave. Jo will be returning to us as our P.E. teacher on Tuesdays. I
would like to take this opportunity to thank Daniel Book for his hard work and dedication to the students and school community of
Mount Kilcoy. Daniel’s enthusiasm, sense of humour and willingness to help out in any way needed, to support the students and the
school, will be missed by all. We wish Daniel all the best for his future.
In the first 5 weeks of Term 4, I will be taking on an Acting Principal position at Yandina State School. Mr Andrew Triggs will be Acting
Principal for the first 3 weeks and Mrs June Tones will be Acting Principal for the following 2 weeks at Mount Kilcoy State School. Mr
Rod Dann and Mr Andrew Holt will be replacing our teachers in the classroom during this time. I will then return as Principal in week 6.
This will be a great opportunity to build leadership capabilities both for myself and for our staff.
I would like to wish all our students and families a safe and happy holidays.
Kind regards,
Selina Barry

Prep News Thankyou everyone for your welcome to Mount Kilcoy and Prep whilst Miss Burkett is away. A little about me. I grew up in Young, NSW and visited my grand-parents’ sheep, cattle and cereal crop farm on week-ends. I have taught for 20 years all around Australia and some places overseas in a number of roles. I am also a children’s author and about to release my sec-ond book, which is quite exciting.
This last week it was wonderful to participate in learn-ing the Mexican Hat Dance. We are currently creating our own dance moves after looking and having a go at other cultural dances. In Maths, we have been mak-ing patterns in a number of ways.
Please say hi and if you have any questions, please let me know.
Have an enjoyable and safe holiday
Kind regards
Andrew Holt
Year 1 News
As the term winds down and we look forward to a much needed break, we have this opportunity to re-flect on how far we’ve travelled this term and also over the year.
The highlight of the last few weeks has to be our Fan-cy Dress Ball. Not only did we look fabulous, the chil-dren performed beautifully. Well done Year One!
As our children continue on their learning paths, something that we are doing really well in our writing is applying punctuation. We started this year with the first term’s goal to write a sentence. Term two’s goal was to write a sentence applying capital letters and full stops to that sentence without a reminder. At the end of term three, we are now writing retells inde-pendently and applying punctuation and following set structure!
In Maths, our Number Ninja races have been hugely popular, with students continuing to challenge them-selves to do their best and move forward at their own rate. This has been a fun way to practise our number fact drills. We’ve also been working with money and becoming familiar with coins.
We hope that everyone has an enjoyable holiday and we look forward to returning in Term 4.

Year 2 News
What a busy end to Term 3 we have had!
Firstly, I want to congratulate the Year 2 students for the effort
they put into learning their dance and then performing it at the
Fancy Dress Ball! It was a fantastic night! I would also like to
thank Miss Breen for all her help with teaching the Year 2 stu-
dents their dance.
The term has gone very fast and it has been fantastic to see the
progress of the Year 2 students across all learning areas. I have
again been extremely proud of their efforts this term! Well done!
Thank you again for your support this term and I hope you have
a safe, relaxing holiday!
See you next term.

Year 3/4 News
It’s hard to believe we’re already at the end of another term. What an incredibly busy and enjoyable term it has been with learning, Book Week, and Fancy Dress.
Firstly, a huge congratulations to the Year 3/4s for work-ing so hard on their dance and nailing it on the night. They worked so hard to learn the moves and it was a great les-son in how to work as a team and persist when things get a bit challenging. I was incredibly proud of them!
This week we are wrapping up assessments. In English, we have been interpreting and evaluating humorous po-ems. Students will create a poem to recite to their class-mates. I am sure they will be very entertaining. In Maths, we have completed a number of maths assessments, in-cluding time, fractions and measurement. This week, the students will complete a final diagnostic test to illustrate their growth over the duration of the term. In Science, we have almost finished our multimodal presentations on Earth, sky and erosion.
I hope that everyone has a relaxing and enjoyable holiday and I will see you next term, refreshed and ready to go for the last 10 weeks of years 3 and 4.
Happy holidays to everyone!

4/5 News
Who can believe we are coming to the end of term 3?
Congratulations to Year 4/5 students for their efforts with
their dance and costumes at the Fancy Dress Ball. We’ve
participated in so many events and activities this term.
There’s still Valley Champs, a Mathematics Tournament
for selected Years 3-6 students and an Accelerated Read-
er celebration to go.
The first English unit for this term has included reading
and writing historical narratives. For the last several
weeks, we have been analysing the structure of a range
of poems. Many students demonstrated a good deal of
talent when writing some of their own simple poems.
Much of the maths content in recent units has included
identifying and using correct measurement units in a
range of problem solving activities.

We will be completing our Geography unit comparing
countries in relation to climate, vegetation types, rainfall
etc.
I am proud to say that students have made an excellent
effort to reach their Accelerated Reader targets for Term
3. Congratulations to those class members who have
far exceeded the year level targets. Their efforts are
rewarded as they are able to transfer their vocabulary
and spelling knowledge to written activities. This year,
we have had a whole school focus on comprehension
and the children were aiming for 100% on their Acceler-
ated Reader comprehension questions. Students have
also worked in small groups on focused reading strate-
gies.
At the end of term 3, there are numerous assessment
tasks in reading, spelling, Maths, English and times ta-
bles to be completed, in order to monitor students’ pro-
gress each term. It’s great to see so many students
have improved reading levels and times tables
knowledge. Well done!

Year 6 News
Well….there goes another term! Here in the Year 6
classroom, we are winding-up with a few final assess-
ment activities and completing some of the many tasks
we have on-the-go. It sure has been a very productive
and entertaining third term!
In maths, students have been refining their knowledge
of fractions and concepts such as number lines, di-
rected numbers and the Cartesian plane. Students have
also undertaken a number of assessments over the last
two weeks, including their final diagnostic “Show Me”
test. The results of these tests have displayed some
excellent positive movement in knowledge and skill over
the course of the term for the whole class. We have one
final assessment to complete this week (based around
fractions) which will give us a clearer picture of the over-
all development of students across all areas of study.
Also on a highly positive note, I must take this oppor-
tunity to congratulate the students on their performance
of our class dance, “Five More Hours” at the Fancy
Dress Ball on Friday night. The effort and enthusiasm
that went into the practice sessions was excellent and it
was fantastic to see the quality of the final performance!
Well done everyone!
Well that’s it for this edition. A big thanks to all those
parents who were able to attend a short parent-teacher
interview during the last fortnight. It is always great to
catch-up and discuss your child’s progress. I wish you
all a happy and safe holiday and I look forward to every-
one returning refreshed and enthusiastic for the final
term of the year.
Andrew Triggs
Fancy Dress Ball
Thank you to all students, families and staff who attend-

have a fantastic night full of dancing and laughs. Con-
gratulations to all classes for the time and effort put into
your class dances.

Work Experience Student
This past week, we have had a student from Grace Lutheran
College completing Work Experience at Mt Kilcoy. Thank you
to Kim Gowans for your assistance in the classrooms. We
hope you have experienced the life of a teacher in the class-
room. Good luck in your future studies.
Free Dress Day
This Friday, the Student Council will be holding a Free
Dress Day to complete the end of term 3. Please
remember sun safe clothing and broad brimmed hats
are compulsory. A gold coin donation is asked for to go
towards Student Council, so that we can purchase
resources.
Public Holiday Term 4
Parents are reminded there is a public holiday on Mon-
day 2 October. School will resume for Term 4 on Tues-
day 3 October 2018.
Happy and Safe Holidays

Keep a watch on our school these holidays
With the holidays fast approaching, we need you to look out for after-hours
crime in our school.
If you see anything suspicious, please remember to call the School Watch
number – 13 17 88.
The School Watch Program is a partnership between Education
Queensland, the Queensland Police Service and the State Government
Protective Security Service. It aims to reduce vandalism, theft and arson in
Queensland schools.
If you do see something suspicious, please don’t attempt to intervene. Call
the School Watch number and let the local police or State Government
Protective Security Service deal with the matter.
Keep the number handy – 13 17 88 – and let’s work together to help
create a safer school community.
If you would like to know more about the School Watch Program, please
call Education Queensland's School Security Section on (07) 3237 0874.
P&C News
The P&C would like to thank everyone who attended and everyone who helped at the Fathers’ Day stall, Fancy Dress Ball, Tuck-shops, Mad Food Science Program, and Ball Games Carnival this term. We hope the students have enjoyed all of the events held this term, and that the Dads and Grandads enjoyed all their wonderful presents for Fathers’ Day.
Tuckshops are always a fun day, and following the positive feedback after the visit from the Root Cause, the P&C made some green smoothies for the tuckshop on Friday 8 September. We are happy to say these sold out, because the students enjoyed them so much! The P&C will now be providing these on a permanent basis on tuckshop days.
Christmas is fast approaching and the P&C will be running a Christmas raffle to be drawn later in Term 4. We would like to kindly suggest and ask for do-nations for this raffle. Things like vouchers, sporting goods, educational fun (puzzles, books, etc.), handmade goods, and hampers are some ideas that are quite popular. If you have any questions about what can and cannot be donated, or would like to arrange delivery, please email the P&C on [email protected] .
Due to the Prep Information Night planned for our regular meeting date, the next P&C meeting will be held Wednesday 18 October starting at 3.30pm. All welcome.
