Basket Weaver's HighwayBasket Weaver's HighwayThe making of Sweetgrass baskets is truely an art. No basket is ever woven distinctly the same. It has been a part of the Mount Pleasant communities for over 300 years. Basket making has been passed on from generationto generation.

It is one of the oldest art forms of African origin in the United States.Mount Pleasant enjoys the distinction of being the only place where this particular type of basketry is practiced.

Visit CHARLES PINCKNEY National Historic Site

If you have not visited, it is a beautiful site to take in. Enjoy a picnic lunch or break at the picnic tables, surrounded by the many beautiful live oaks.

The Pinckney family owned Snee Farm from 1754 to 1817. Charles Pinckney inherited the property from his father in 1782. Snee Farm was one of Charles Pinckney's seven plantations. At 715 acres it was Pinckney's smallest plantation, and a favorite retreat from his Meeting Street house in Charleston. The Pinckneys came here to relax and spend holidays.Snee Farm represents over 200 years of agricultural use, but the farming era ended with the sale and development of 687 acres in the 1960's. The sold property became residential subdivisions, a country club, and a golf course. The house and remaining 28 acres was a family residence until 1990. This remnant is now preserved as Charles Pinckney National Historic Site.
