NEWS

These are exciting times for Mount Sinai, and let me tell you how great it feels to have you by our side! We just opened a brand new space for our moms and babies, part of the six new floors that we’ve been dreaming about for years — a dream that your support helped bring to fruition.

This milestone is one of many on the horizon for Mount Sinai. With our upcoming Campaign to Make Medical History, we stand poised to change the way medicine is practiced forever.

We are rebuilding our Hospital to match the excellence practiced by our scientists and clinical teams on a daily basis. This excellence is apparent in the stories you will read about in this issue: the innovative collaborations between our researchers and clinicians, our focus on the patient experience and our leadership in health-care education. Stories about the Foundation leadership and incredible fundraising by donors like Andrew Hoffman and our very own physicians — these are examples of how we are able to achieve the greatness that you expect.

Thank you for your most generous support and your continued loyalty, and for being with us as we break new ground for the future of medicine.

All the best, from our family to yours.

Strong leadership is the backbone of every successful organization. Mount Sinai’s Foundation is no exception; in fact, it’s a shining example. Thanks to Brent Belzberg and Jay Hennick who have served as Co-Chairs since January 2011, the Foundation is well positioned to build on its success, strengthen its donor community and support the exciting future plans of the Hospital.

As long-time supporters of Mount Sinai, both Brent and Jay have brought their extensive business skills to their philanthropic ventures in support of the Hospital. Brent is the Senior Managing Partner at the successful private equity firm, TorQuest Partners, Inc., and Jay is the Founder and CEO of FirstService Corporation, a global leader in real estate services including Colliers International. With their strong strategic skills and entrepreneurial spirit, the two are propelling the Foundation to new heights.

“People often ask me what motivates me to spend my volunteer time at Mount Sinai,” says Jay. “There is no other hospital in Canada, or perhaps the world, that has the tradition and commitment to excellence that Mount Sinai does. Every clinician, scientist and volunteer I meet is transforming patients’ lives every day. I want to be a part of that history and help shape the Hospital for future generations of our community.”

Brent and Jay both have deep involvement in Toronto’s Jewish community and feel very proud of the history of Mount Sinai and its core values. “Mount Sinai was created by the Jewish community for the greater community, almost 90 years ago,” says Brent. “I am so proud to be a part of that legacy of visionary philanthropists who continue to come together to ensure the delivery of compassionate care, innovative education and leading edge research that benefits everyone that comes through our doors.”

A key focus for Brent and Jay has been preparing for the launch of the multi-year,multi-million dollar Campaign to Make Medical History. “Mount Sinai is entering a historic new era,” says Brent. “The Campaign will be one of the biggest and most progressive philanthropic events in our history and will enable Mount Sinai to significantly expand its leadership role and international stature.”

In addition to preparing for the Campaign, Jay and Brent have been working with board members, volunteers and staff to support the Foundation’s efforts, including the creation of a new annual campaign — the Constellation of Distinction — to fund Mount Sinai’s highest priority needs, the introduction of a variety of new and engaging donor events and attracting new talent to the Foundation team and the volunteer base.

“Brent and Jay are a winning combination in terms of leadership, fundraising acumen and determination. They lead with conviction and they lead by example. We are incredibly fortunate to have them at the helm,” says Mark Gryfe, President and CEO of the Foundation.

As the new Chair of Mount Sinai Hospital’s Board of Directors, Jay will carry on the strong tradition of excellence championed by the Hospital’s long-standing Board Chair, Lawrence Bloomberg. Jay will continue to work together with the Foundation to achieve its goals. “The Foundation is such an integral part of the Hospital’s ability to deliver excellent patient care every day,” comments Jay. “I look forward to continuing to work closely with Brent and the entire Foundation team to ensure a strong future for Mount Sinai.”

A Strong Partnership for a Strong Foundation

EDUCATION AT MOUNT SINAI:

Learning to Deliver The Best Medicine

As one of Mount Sinai Hospital’s core three pillars, the education of health-care professionals has always been a key strategic priority. That tradition continues today, with a strong commitment to build and expand our programs to meet the needs of present-day students.

When Dr. Jacqueline James became Mount Sinai’s Vice-President of Education, her goals were clear: to provide the best possible learning environment for the next generation of doctors, nurses and allied health professionals, and to encourage students to pursue excellence in the quest for outstanding, collaborative, patient and family-centred care. With these goals in mind, Dr. James and her colleagues have been laying the plans to ensure Mount Sinai remains on the cutting edge and a coveted destination for health-care professional education.

As an internationally recognized academic health sciences centre affiliated with the University of Toronto, Mount Sinai is committed to the highest level of education across many health-care disciplines.

“We know we deliver exceptional programs for all our learners,” says Dr. James. “However, it’s important to always aim higher, to continue adapting to meet the needs of our students and patients in novel ways so that skills are acquired as efficiently and effectively as possible.”

One innovative way of achieving this goal is through the use of simulation — an area where Mount Sinai stands apart from other teaching hospitals. Our simulated programs include the renowned University of Toronto Surgical Skills Centre at Mount Sinai Hospital, and the Program for Resuscitation Education and Patient Safety (PREPS), where students and clinicians can train and hone their skills in simulated environments that closely mimic real life, but where no patient is harmed during the course of learning.

“Simulated situations are incredibly important learning opportunities,” explains Dr. James. “Getting the experience of participating in a “mock code blue” when a patient is crashing, or learning to deal

with a life-threatening, unpredictable surgical complication before it arises, is invaluable. We need to bring the key players together in a life-like situation and teach them how to handle it as a team.”

Marko Skrtic, a second-year medical student at the University of Toronto, feels it is a definite advantage to learn at Mount Sinai. “The health-care team at Mount Sinai provides a world-class teaching environment for students,” says Marko. “In addition, the staff at the education centre provide daily support, which translates into a rewarding learning experience.”

While Dr. James and her colleagues feel significant pride in Mount Sinai’s current educational programs, they continue to focus on what’s coming next. “There are so many exciting ways to continue building our programs. We will continue to advance our simulation labs, and also hope to engage the donor community on upcoming projects, like transforming our medical library to become a modern-day information commons. With donors as part of our team, we’ll have the power to raise the bar for future generations of health-care professionals.”

“Melanoma can be deadly, but the chances of survival are quite high if it’s caught early. Follow these tips, become an expert on your own skin and get checked regularly by a doctor.”

— DR . DAVID W. TANNENBAUM , FAMILY PHYSIC IAN- IN-CHIEF AT MOUNT S INAI HOSPITAL

As we head into the sunny summer months, it’s a good time to think about how to prevent skin cancers like melanoma. Here’s how you can protect yourself and your family:

Avoid UV radiation as much as possible:Avoid the peak sun hours between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m., or be sure to wear sunscreen and protective clothing including a wide-brimmed hat and sunglasses. Tanning beds emit harmful radiation and should always be avoided.

Know the trouble spots: For men, the most common spot for melanoma is the upper back. For women, the upper back and lower legs are most often affected. Slather sunscreen on those important areas!

Wear sunscreen year-round with the right UV protection: Sunscreen with an SPF of 15 or higher is recommended, with protection

from both UVA and UVB radiation. Apply it to lips and ears and under clothing too!

Protect children: Limit your child’s exposure to the sun, especially during peak hours. Prolonged sun exposure in the first 18 years of life can increase the chances of melanoma.

Know what to look for: You know your skin, so watch for moles, brown spots or growths that show the ABCDEs of melanoma: A=asymmetry (irregular shape), B=border (notched edges), C=colour (very dark), D=diameter (enlarging), E=evolution (change in appearance over time). Report any concerns to your doctor.

The Hold’em for Life Charity Challenge events are unique fundraising evenings created by philanthropist Andrew Hoffman, in an effort to support his sister in her battle with breast cancer and to help change the future of those who suffer with the disease. Each event brings together leaders from a specific industry — namely the real estate, mining and asset management industries — for an evening of card playing, networking, entertainment and fundraising. Since April 2007, Hold’em events have collectively raised over $15 million! The beneficiaries are those hospitals actively involved in cancer and other medical research, including Mount Sinai Hospital.

“Giving back to the community is important, because we should do what we can to help others,” says Andrew. “I see the Hold’em events as a unique way to bring people together so they can give back collectively — as an industry. The impact is so much greater when we collaborate.”

This past February was the inaugural Asset Management Hold’em event and was chaired by industry giants Gerry

Schwartz and Mark Wiseman. Their outstanding efforts resulted in one of the most successful Hold’em events to date, raising nearly $1 million for breast cancer research at Mount Sinai!

The Marvelle Koffler Breast Centre at Mount Sinai is a premiere facility that treats approximately 33,000 patients each year. Treatment for breast cancer is co-ordinated through a multidisciplinary team where multiple physicians have input into each patient’s care.

Dr. Pamela Goodwin, Medical Oncologist, Director of the Marvelle Koffler Breast Centre and Marvelle Koffler Chair in Breast Research, is incredibly grateful for the support received through the Hold‘em events. “These funds will help provide new insights into how to best treat this disease and ultimately allow us to individualize the care of patients

who develop it. This support will have a profound impact for many years to come.”

Andrew has been very pleased with the results and feels grateful to those who dedicate their time and money to these events. “It is very satisfying to work with an incredible group of volunteers and sponsors with such generosity of spirit towards a common goal of making a difference in finding a cure for cancer.”

Imagine the day when a simple blood test will help physicians more accurately diagnose and prescribe a personalized treatment for cancer or another chronic disease. Imagine the day when robotic-assisted surgery enables more patients to walk out immediately after knee operations.

It may sound like science fiction, but Mount Sinai Hospital’s medical experts believe they can make significant advances towards achieving these goals.

“At Mount Sinai, we are ambitious about excellence,” says Joseph Mapa, President and CEO of Mount Sinai Hospital. “With world class clinicians, internationally renowned scientists and best-in-class patient care, we are expanding our leadership role in transforming the health-care sector.”

Building on Mount Sinai’s international leadership, the Hospital is poised to embark on its largest fundraising campaign in more than a decade.

The Campaign to Make Medical History will bolster the strength of our outstanding clinicians and researchers through two steps: the redevelopment of the Hospital; and groundbreaking medical research that will redefine the practice of medicine.

at Mount SinaiStep 1: Transforming Our Hospital through State-of-the-art Facilities and EquipmentMount Sinai’s redevelopment will create new surroundings that complement the exceptional care delivered by our talented physicians and clinical teams. This is essential to the success of the Campaign.

“To Make Medical History, we need to continue to retain and attract the most talented clinicians and scientists,” explains Jay Hennick, Chair of Mount Sinai Hospital’s Board of Directors and Campaign Co-Chair. “The best are drawn to work in hospitals with the state-of-the-art facilities and equipment that enable them to discover and provide the best possible patient care.”

The Government of Ontario has confirmed its trust in Mount Sinai’s potential to Make Medical History by committing to pay for 90% of projected construction costs associated with the Hospital’s redevelopment. This commitment is contingent on raising the remaining 10% of funds for construction costs, as well as 100% of the funds needed for clinical equipment and outfitting, through donations from Mount Sinai’s philanthropic community.

Step 2: Revolutionizing the Practice of Medicine through Medical ResearchBy raising funds to support groundbreaking medical research, the Campaign will propel Mount Sinai’s internationally renowned physicians and scientists to broaden their impact and expand into new frontiers in health care.

Inspired by their quest to cure patients, our experts have already secured Toronto’s place as one of the world’s leading centres for research and treatment of diabetes, inflammatory bowel disease such as Crohn’s and colitis, and sarcoma (the cancer that claimed the life of Terry Fox). Their contributions are driving innovation in critical care, emergency medicine, personalized

genetic medicine, stem cell research, and maternal and infant health.

“This Campaign will be the springboard that launches us to the next level of medical excellence,” says Dr. Jim Woodgett, Director of Research at Mount Sinai’s Samuel Lunenfeld Research Institute. “We are incredibly excited about the lives we will change for the better.”

Partners in Making Medical HistoryAs Mount Sinai embarks on this ambitious Campaign to support a historic new era, we are fortunate to have our wonderful community of donors by our side.

“Mount Sinai has a long history of visionary philanthropic leaders who have enabled the Hospital to redefine

excellence in patient care,” says Campaign Co-Chair Brent Belzberg, who also serves as Chair of the Mount Sinai Hospital Foundation Board of Directors. “Now that the Hospital stands poised to shine brighter than ever, we will be asking once again for the support of our loyal community. Their generosity and dedication will fuel an exciting new era of clinical and scientific achievement.”

Together, we will transform Mount Sinai into one of Canada’s most state-of-the-art hospitals, and fuel medical research to transform patient care. Together, we will Make Medical History.

Mount Sinai Physicians: Philanthropy at its Finest

Not only are Mount Sinai Hospital physicians renowned for providing exemplary patient care, but they are now counted among the Hospital’s finest philanthropists as well. Mount Sinai’s annual Physicians’ Campaign was a huge success, incredibly raising over $1 million for the Hospital!

Mount Sinai Hospital Foundation President and CEO, Mark Gryfe, is thrilled. “This outstanding level of support and generosity from such a dedicated and renowned group of physicians clearly demonstrates their belief in, and personal commitment to, Mount Sinai. It really helps others get behind our Hospital when they see this level of dedication from the very people delivering care. It means so much.”

Past Physicians’ Campaigns have seen funds put towards department renovations, research projects, software upgrades, X-ray equipment and other tangible improvements that significantly impact patient care. Physicians have found great meaning, seeing first-hand how their contributions have directly benefited patients.

“Our patients experience the excellence in patient care delivered by our physicians every day,” says Chief Clinical Officer Dr. Tom Stewart. “The fact that our physicians also demonstrate their dedication by personally donating to the Foundation is a testament to the depth of their commitment to patients and to the future of our Hospital.”

Acting in his capacity as Chair of Mount Sinai’s Medical Advisory Council, Dr. Molyn Leszcz (left), Psychiatrist-in-Chief, presented a cheque for $1.1 million from Hospital physicians to Mark Gryfe, President and CEO of the Foundation.

What if each person’s health journey included a Patient Navigator to support them along the way? What if waiting for a health-care appointment was an enriching experience? What if we invested in the partnership between our health-care teams and the patients and families impacted by our care? These are the questions on the mind of Dr. Matthew Morgan as he leads Mount Sinai Hospital’s new Office of Patient Experience and Outcomes.

The Office — one of the first of its kind in Canadian hospitals — was created to provide leadership within Mount Sinai to ensure the delivery of a safe, high quality patient experience that ultimately results in better patient outcomes. As Mount Sinai’s first Vice-President of Patient Experience and Outcomes, Dr. Morgan’s rare skill set offers a combination of the practice of medicine together with extensive experience in health informatics, quality improvement and stakeholder engagement.

“Partnership and information are key,” says Dr. Morgan. “Our priority is to partner with high performing teams across Mount Sinai to measure and better understand our patients’ experiences. Armed with these patient-centric facts, we can then assist our patient care teams in their goal to continually improve patient experience and outcomes.”

To accelerate the impact of the new Office, Dr. Morgan was thrilled to receive an outstanding $1 million donation from Jill and Dan Devlin to support the Office’s mission. “The Devlins’ generosity will have a major impact on what we are able to

accomplish,” comments Dr. Tom Stewart, Chief Clinical Officer and visionary behind the creation of the new Office. “We have many plans to ensure a quality experience for our patients, and this incredible gift will help bring those to fruition.”

Some of those initiatives are already underway. Dr. Morgan and his team are championing an impressive line-up of innovations and quality improvements that are taking Mount Sinai’s Putting Patients First agenda to a new level, including:

• Patient Navigators: Specially-trained health-care providers offering individualized support and guidance for patients with more complex medical journeys. They have shown to improve the patient experience, family support and care co-ordination.

• Enrichment Spaces: Mount Sinai is leveraging industry best practices to assess how we might be able to redesign waiting spaces to enhance comfort, learning and enrichment for patients and families.

• Bedside Experience Tablets: Our new David & Stacey Cynamon Mother & Baby Unit now includes interactive bedside tablets. A recent story in the National Post commented on the ease with which a new mom was able to quickly upload photos of her newborn to Facebook the day after the birth — from an interactive flat screen with free Wi-fi in the comfort of her new and modern hospital room at Mount Sinai. This technology enhances communication with loved ones, as well as entertainment choices, education and the overall patient experience.

In addition, Dr. Morgan — in partnership with Debbie Fischer, Senior Vice-President of Strategy and Organizational Development and her team — will help Mount Sinai launch its Service with HEART program, making it the first hospital in Canada to adopt the Cleveland Clinic’s world-class service excellence program. “Today’s leaders in health care are creating new models of care around patient needs,” says Dr. Morgan. “By putting patients and families first, we are changing care delivery in Canada for the next generation.”

Bench to Bedside Collaborations set Mount Sinai Apart

A dozen colleagues are gathered in the Hospital’s Surgical Skills room and wait for the ‘Sarcoma Rounds’ to begin. Scientists converse with medical oncologists, orthopaedic surgeons, residents and trainees. They discuss the results of a limb-sparing surgery for a particular sarcoma patient, and one of the scientists mentions key genes suspected to play a role in the patient’s tumour. The scenario is familiar territory for Drs. Jay Wunder and Irene Andrulis, orthopaedic surgeon and molecular biologist, respectively, at Mount Sinai Hospital.

Increasingly in the Hospital’s evolution and in the field of biomedical research in general, scientists’ projects are intersecting with clinical teams, and collaborations such as that between Drs. Wunder and Andrulis are combining detailed clinical information with sophisticated science, helping to define new treatment strategies for improved patient outcomes.

Co-head of the Fred A. Litwin Centre for Cancer Genetics, Senior Investigator at Mount Sinai’s Samuel Lunenfeld Research Institute and Anne and Max Tanenbaum

Chair in Molecular Medicine, Dr. Andrulis’ pioneering work in breast cancer genetics is world renowned. As well, she and her colleagues are conducting studies to help find predictors that will identify risk, prognosis, treatment outcomes and recurrence of sarcoma (malignant tumours that arise from muscles, bones, nerves, fat, blood vessels or connective tissue).

Dr. Wunder, Mount Sinai’s Surgeon-in-Chief, Leadership Sinai Chair in Surgery and Rubinoff/Gross Chair in Orthopaedic Oncology, is also a scientist investigating the genetic causes of bone and soft tissue sarcomas. He has collaborated with Dr. Andrulis and other colleagues to develop Canada’s most extensive sarcoma tissue bank to help determine the relationship between genetic mutations in tumours and clinical outcomes.

Dr. Andrulis notes that her expertise in molecular biology, combined with Dr. Wunder’s clinical insights, allow them to pose and examine challenging clinical questions in a holistic, systems-focused way. “It’s become a mutually beneficial relationship because of our combined expertise,” agrees Dr. Wunder.

Through their success with the sarcoma tumour bank, an extensive clinical trial initiative and the sarcoma program’s astonishing cure rates of 75 per cent, Drs. Wunder and Andrulis — and colleagues including orthopaedic surgeon Dr. Peter Ferguson and surgical oncologists Drs. Rebecca Gladdy and Carol Swallow — have garnered worldwide acclaim.

“Researchers and clinicians internationally speak about the expertise of our sarcoma tumour group,” says Dr. Andrulis. “Here at Mount Sinai, we have specifically recruited research associates to collect and analyze patient tumours and data.”

“I think it’s a really great model that other centres are hoping to replicate,” says Dr. Wunder. “We can bring together our questions about the disease, and look at problems from several viewpoints.”

Opening of New Floors a Significant Milestone in Mount Sinai’s History

“It is one thing to receive great medical care — which we certainly did at Mount Sinai. But it is quite another to be cared for on a human level — where everyone goes above and beyond what you might expect at a hospital.”

— John and Lorna Levac

“It was a very difficult time — Jordan was very premature and almost didn’t make it. But the care he received in the NICU was phenomenal, and we will always be indebted to Mount Sinai for saving him.”

— Richard Pilosof

“The nurses in Mount Sinai’s NICU took him under their wings. They knew I wasn’t there, and knew he wasn’t being held by his mother the way he needed to be. They took it upon themselves to give him as much time in their own arms as possible. That just doesn’t happen everywhere. I will be forever grateful for that.”
