At the moment we are in the throesof the World Cup Finals, the sportthey call the “beautiful game.” (Imust say this is not a view shared byeveryone in my house!)

As we watch sporting tournamentslike the World Cup, we cannot fail tobe impressed by the fitness, athleticism and determination of theplayers and their artistry with afootball. As a team reaches the finalstages of a competition, the wholefocus turns to winning the trophy andbecoming world Champions.

If we boil everything down the goal ofevery team and every player infootball is to move the ball up thepitch and into the net. It doesn’tmatter how many passes, nutmegs orCruyff turns a team can do, if theycannot score a goal then they willnever win!

There is a passage in the Bible whichpictures life as a sport: “Forgettingwhat is behind and strainingtowards what is ahead, I press ontowards the goal to win the prize forwhich God has called meheavenwards in Christ Jesus.”Philippians 3: 13-14

Straining on and pressing forwardstowards the goal to win the prize is afamiliar picture in our minds in anysport, not just football.

But the prize theBible is speaking of isnot silverware, oreven a golden trophy, but eternity in heavenwith God.

There is a goal in life, a set of posts inthe distance which represent the endof our life. We all have theopportunity to press on up the pitchtoward the goal and to win the prize. But we will only be able to have thisprize of eternal life with God, if wecome to know Jesus as our Saviourand Lord while we live in this world. After the final whistle, there are nomore chances.

Jesus came to die on the cross tomake a relationship with God possible, but Jesus’ sacrifice can only do thisfor us if we come in faith to Him, askHim to forgive us for all the wrongswe have done and to restore us intorelationship with God. Then we’ll beheading up the pitch in the rightdirection aiming at the goal.

There are many people who spendtheir lives chasing many differentkinds of goals. But only one prizereally matters, having a relationshipwith God for eternity.

Come along on a Sunday to hearmore about how you can have arelationship with God.

A Personal StoryAlison Caldwell used to come to Mount Zion Church years ago, whenwe were in the big building. After attending our Christmas Concert lastyear (and being really impressed with the puppets!) she decided tostart coming along again on Sundays. I asked Alison what it meant toher to come back to the Church. With a lovely smile, she said,

I have a lot more happiness, understanding, and more tolerance. In the last few weeks, Jesus has helped me face some hard times, helped me understand who I am and I’ve become more tolerant

of other people. I have more forgiveness. I feel happier because ofwhat God has done. I’ve become closer to my sister after years of nocontact. We’re actually really quite close now and I think that’s got alot to do with coming back to Church and finding more out about Godand following His way rather than my way.

The Haven is one of the charitieswe at Mount Zion support bygiving regular donations. Locatedin the countryside betweenGreenock and Kilmacolm, theyprovide significant support andaccommodation to young meninvolved in alcohol and drugmisuse in order that they maybecome free from their addiction. The rehabilitation programmehelps residents acquire life skillsnecessary for future independentliving.

As its name implies, The Haven is asheltered, safe place; a refugewhere residents can be safe andfree from disturbance or threat.

The aim of staff at the Haven is toenable these ‘disadvantaged’people to live a drug free, healthyand socially rewarding lifestyle inaccordance with Christianprinciples, because they believethat every individual is of valueand worth and that everyindividual has the capacity tochange with the appropriatesupport. Mount Zion Church Fellowshipcomprises a very mixed age range. We have a number of elderlypeople, the oldest of whom,Florence, celebrated her 93rd

birthday on Sunday 20th Junewhen she took part in all ouractivities.

In our Bible Class we are followinga series of bible studies set foryoung people of high school age, with plenty of scope for discussion, learning and prayer. The aim is tohelp the young teens to make areal commitment to the Lord Jesusand to mature in their faith.

Our Junior Church members, aged5 - 11, are a lively bunch. They area very musical group, singing andinstrumental. They not only takepart in our own special services,e.g. Christmas, but have alsobecome popular down atBarnard’s Court Mission inGreenock. The children are beingled through a ‘Go Teach’ series oflessons entitled ‘People Jesus Met’.There is often a surprise after thelesson in the form of a DVD, a quizor a game. Helen Dunbar
