Mountaineers are Always Free
Spring is here, and we are enjoying some great weather. The flowering redbuds, dogwoods, and tulip trees were beautiful, and we are now
mowing our grass on a weekly basis. It is now time to plant our gardens and flower beds – my favorite spring outside activity! I would also
like to “plant” the idea of becoming more active in your in your state society. Attend the next WV scientific and business meeting, join a
committee, volunteer to write an article for the newsletter, or present a scientific session. You will reap the benefits of meeting other al-
lied health professionals, networking, and learning more about your profession.
We had a great spring meeting on April 22 at the Pierpont Advanced Technology Center in Fairmont. Five CEUs were awarded - topics
included chronic lymphocytic leukemia, sepsis markers, legislative issues pertaining to the laboratory, and Hemoglobin A1C conversion to
serum glucose levels. We had a scrumptious catered meal, and we collected toys and children’s books for the Ronald McDonald House in
Morgantown in lieu of registration fees. During lunch, Michael Waide, MT, conducted a tour for attendees of the new Pierpont ATC facility
and student laboratories. We also had honored guests with us – Ivette Rivera, Eastern District Councilor, and her husband Peter from
New York City. This year’s meeting had a record attendance. If you could not attend this year, make plans NOW to attend next year’s
WV scientific and business meeting tentatively scheduled for April 21, 2018, at the Pierpont ATC in Fairmont.
The AMT National Educational Program and Business Meeting will be held July 9-13, 2017, at the Intercontinental Hotel at the Plaza in Kan-
sas City, Mo. Hotel rates are 129/night + tax. A great line up of speakers can be found in the Preliminary Program in the latest issue of the
AMT Events.
Remember to record your continuing education activities online using AMTrax. You can easily print out a “report card” and present it to
your employer showing your commitment to lifelong learning and to the profession.
Two recognition weeks were held this spring. National Dental Assistants Week was held March 5-11, 2017, and National Medical Labora-
tory Professionals Week was held April 23-29, 2017. Thank you for all that you do to make a difference in our patient’s lives.
Thank you for the privilege to serve as your state president. Please feel free to contact me at [email protected] if you have any ques-
tions, or would like to become involved in our state society.
Sincerely,
Janet Crigler, MT
WVSSAMT President

The WVSSAMT Mountaineer Med Line is published twice a year. It is sent to all state
members, National Board Members, and Editors to inform them of our state society and
upcoming events. Any article appearing in the newsletter represents the opinion of the
author and is not necessarily the WVSSAMT unless the article is so designated.

A new year is always an exciting time to reflect and make plans. As we move forward, I hope everyone is well and
ready to proactively participate. Understand that the success of the state society is not due to one person; it's a group ef-
fort. Aristotle said, " The whole is greater than the sum of its parts." Therefore, together we can accomplish the necessary
changes to potentially affect the state society.
It is time to celebrate and recognize our AMT members. March 5 - 11, 2017 is the Dental Assistant Recognition
Week. March is the month to acknowledge the contributions to healthy smiles and the importance of the Dental Assistant
in the Dental Team.
Medical Laboratory Professional Week is April 23 - 29, 2017. In celebration, acknowledge the efforts of the Laboratory
Professional to get the results that impact patient care.
Make your reservation for the AMT Educational Programs and National Meeting at Kansas City, Missouri July 9 - 13,
2017 in the Intercontinental Hotel at the Plaza.
Take advantage of the early bird registration; the fee is $225.00. Registration forms are available in AMT magazine and
online at the AMT website.
The Leadership Forum and Training sessions will include the following topics:

2. What are You Doing With Our Money?
3. CEU are Your Responsibility.
4. Searching Through the AMT Website.

much better with the transition to Central Banking.

Delegate’s Report of Annual Convention and Business Meeting 2016
By Carol Miller, RMA
I would like to thank the West Virginia State Society of American Medical Technologist’s for allowing me
serve as a Delegate to the AMT National Convention. It was held at The Peabody Memphis Hotel, known for the
ducks that are led into the lobby daily by the “Duck Master” and is filled with artwork, several restaurants and
shops. From the rooftop there is a view of Memphis and the Mississippi River.
I had an amazing week attending the Annual Business Meeting, Meet the Candidates, Resolutions Presen-
tation, AMT Annual Reports Meeting, District Meeting, AMTIE Business Meeting, and Town Hall Session. At the
District Meeting, as each state was called in, we each called out a number letting everyone know how many we
had representing West Virginia. It was wonderful meeting other delegates from all over the United States!
The First Timers Orientation on Monday was very informative, and made us “First Timers” feel welcome.
The Orientation gave me the opportunity to meet AMT officers and get some direction on where I needed to be
and what I needed to do during the week.
The Keynote Address by comedian Brad Nieder MD was the first CE activity of many offered during the
week. There were many topics to choose from, including CPR classes for anyone who needed to be certified.
Topics ranged from Diabetes Monitoring, Infectious Diseases, Communications’ style, and various lab topics. This
is a great opportunity to earn education credits, while getting involved with electing officers and learning how to
get involved with the business responsibilities of being an AMT member.
The week was not filled with only business and education. There was a Welcome Party with food and
beverages on Monday, The Awards Banquet on Thursday with more food, beverages, entertainment (Elvis!) and
dancing! We got to “Walk in Memphis” to raise money for The Kidney Foundation. Memphis has many interest-
ing things to do and see. I visited Graceland, toured the Gibson guitar factory, visit Mudd Island, take a riverboat
ride, visit The Memphis Rock and Soul Museum, eat and shop on Beale Street.
One of my most memorable events was being awarded the Chester B. Dziekonski Memorial Grant, for
being a first timer at the AMT again for allowing me to help represent the state of West Virginia at the AMT Con-
vention. meeting AMTIE (American Medical Technologists Institute for Excellence) President, Taffy Durfee pre-
sented me with the award and a check for $250.00. AMTIE offers scholarships and grants for current and future
allied health care professionals. They also had a silent auction during the week with many donations (books, jew-
elry, and artwork, etc.) to raise money for the scholarships.
I encourage all members to attend a Convention. The experience is one I’ll never forget as well as the
many new friends I meet. Thank you

Editor’s Message Hello everyone. We have had a lot of rain, but
without it, it wouldn’t be a beautiful Spring!! I
was saddened that I could not attend our Spring
Meeting in April. The stomach bug got me. I
know I missed some wonderful speakers, great
conversations and amazing food. As I write this,
I think of how many wonderful friendships I have
made this past 11 years due to this great profes-
sion. The great thing about it is, we have our
differences, but when it is all said and done, we
are all dedicated to our patients first and fore-
most. We are like family. So, I want to let eve-
ryone know that you are a great group of pro-
fessionals and friends. Hope to see you in the
Fall.

With Spring comes babies. And we were blessed with eight beautiful and

Advance Technology Center
NEWS RELEASE
On Saturday, April 22, 2017, the Medical Laboratory Technology, the Laboratory Assistant and Phlebotomy Pro-
grams of Pierpont Community & Technical College hosted the Spring meeting of the West Virginia State Society
of American Medical Technologists (WVSSAMT) at the Advanced Technology Center. The faculty of the School
of Health Careers was excited to host its first continuing education conference at the ATC.
The event was well attended. 3 executive leaders from the national AMT were in attendance. 20 participants
were on hand to engage in professional development throughout the morning and afternoon. 5 students from
the Laboratory Assistant and MLT programs participated in the continuing education event—that’s 25% of the
total participants that were students! Melissa White, MT (ASCP), AHI (AMT) and Michael Waide, MT (AMT, AAB),
AHI (AMT) presented presentations on The Diagnosis and Management of Sepsis and Chronic Lymphocytic Leu-
kemia, respectively. Sherri Craddock, MLS(ASCP), an adjunct faculty member in the School of Health Careers
was also present. 3 Pierpont affiliated faculty were on hand.
Yvette Rivera, District Councilor for this region of AMT, commented that she was excited to observe such a posi-
tive collaboration between the education programs and AMT, as demonstrated in the presence of our students
on a Saturday morning at a continuing education event.
Those present also participated in a tour of the simulated outpatient center of the ATC, using an interprofes-
sional, case study approach to introduce the academic programs of the School of Health Careers and the
health care professions for which Pierpont prepares its students.
Following the continuing education event, the Society held its regular business meeting during which Michael
Waide was elected by acclamation to the state society’s board of directors and Melissa White was selected to
attend the National Convention for AMT to be held in Kansas City in July; Michael Waide, who will be receiving
a national award will be present for the national convention in Kansas City. Pierpont will be well represented at
the National Convention of AMT!
Donations were collected for the Ronald McDonald House in Morgantown as a community outreach service.
The WVSSAMT has already requested the use of the Advanced Technology Center for its Spring 2018 meeting.
“The programs in the clinical laboratory sciences at Pierpont are grateful for the partnership with American
Medical Technologists and the West Virginia State Society of American Medical Technologists that supports our
students and our program. This was a great way to segue into Medical Laboratory Professionals Week,” says
Michael Waide.
