MOUNTSFIELD MUSTANGS

December 2019

From the Principal’s Desk

Dear Parents/Guardians,

Where has the time gone?

It seems like only yesterday that we were greeting all of the keen and rested faces after a very well deserved summer break!

Well, it’s almost time that we embark on another break. A break, regardless of your religious affiliation or cultural background, marked by giving, serving and celebrating others.

At Mountsfield, I am pleased to share that our student population is becoming even more diverse. This being said, there is so much learning that can come from embracing this diversity…which will be shared and celebrated during our Holiday Concerts.

Regardless if you celebrate Bodhi Day, Christmas, Pancha Ganapati, Hanukkah or Kwanzaa, there is always something we can agree upon…the power of human connection and the 3 F’s.

Family- Apart from your own personal health, I cannot think of anything more important.

Friendship- Those trusting and fun-filled bonds where we muster the courage to take risks and demonstrate our vulnerabilities, all while knowing that our pals have our backs.

Food- Not just because I love it. The special moments where we are afforded opportunities to ‘break bread’ with the special people in our lives should never be rushed or taken for granted. This is where the magic happens!

In this vain, I would like to share the following…

Light-hearted Disclaimer- We are not receiving a financial ‘kick-back’ for the following reference…

Ad campaigns are designed to elicit a specific emotional response. This holds especially true for the #EatTogether series of adverts from President’s Choice, which accurately supports my claims from above.

I encourage you to view the following, if you are so inclined…https://youtu.be/aWTdX_WxzJA

Although you will all be missed during the break, I too am looking forward to spending quality time with my family (without my watch on).

Even though we are still a few weeks away, I would like to take this time to wish you all Happy Holidays and a Healthy, Happy and Prosperous New Year!

Mr. MacGregor

Scholastic Book Fair Thank you to all of the Mountsfield Families who supported our Scholastic Book Fair! Your purchases helped us raise funds that will be used to buy new books, technology and supplies for our Library Learning Commons and Makerspace. We couldn't have done it without the AMAZING volunteers from the Home and School Association. Your time and assistance was greatly appreciated. Thank you, Mountsfield! - Ms. Robertson

Forest of Reading

The Forest of Reading program is coming soon! FDK and Primary students will be reading the Blue Spruce picture books during their library time over the next few months and have an opportunity to vote for their favourite at the end of April. Junior students are able to choose from Silver Birch Fiction, Express and Yellow Cedar Non-fiction categories. Students that read at least 5 books in one of the categories will earn the right to vote in April. Intermediate students can read Red Maple Fiction and Yellow Cedar Non-fiction this year. Reading at least 5 books from either category will give them the chance to vote.

All Junior and Intermediate students will be reading the French selections with Mme Brenner, and M

McIndoo, and voting in April for their favourite selection from Le Prix Peuplier.

We have a limited number of copies of the Silver Birch and Red Maple books. Students participating in the

program as encouraged to check the London Public Library for their availability as well.

Being A Good Neighbour at Mountsfield We take being a good neighbour very seriously here at Mountsfield, and are fortunate to be part of such a lovely community. We ask families that are dropping students off or picking them up at the end of the day to please not park at the end of our neighbours driveways. Even if for a few minutes, it becomes very inconvenient for folks who are try to get in or out of their own home.

Boys Volleyball

Congratulations to the grade 7/8 boys' volleyball team on their successful season! The team practiced three days and played two games a week during the months of October and November. The boys trained hard all season, they worked together to refine their skills and develop cohesion on the court. During the A West Region playoffs, the team finished second in round robin play and was eliminated during the semi finals. Mr. Da Silva, Mrs. Edwards, and the Mountsfield community are so proud of the teams sportsmanship and performance.

Grade 8 Families Our grade 8 students will be working on high school course selections throughout the month of January. Please check out our Mountsfield Guidance Website for information on high school tour dates. https://sites.google.com/gotvdsb.ca/mountsfield-guidance/home

Students should have decided on which high school they will be registering at and have an idea of their electives of choice when they return from the holidays.

Contact Ms. Robertson or Mrs. Chevalier if you have any questions regarding this transition to high school.

Hour of Code In celebration of Computer Science Education Week, December 9-13 many classes at Mountsfield will be participating in the Hour of Code…. And beyond. For some this may be an introduction to computer science and for others it will be an opportunity to extend their learning and try new coding opportunities.

Check out the website https://hourofcode.com/ca/learn for many amazing activities to try at home.

Mountsfield Home & School Association

Greetings Mustangs,

The Giving Tree is up in the front foyer and all of the apples have been picked! Thank you to Ms. Lehman for working with the Board to create our new super portable tree! We’re very thankful for all families who have picked an apple or two and we’d ask that all gifts (unwrapped, in a gift bag and the apple attached) be returned to the school office by Friday, December 9th (a few extra days for those who’ve noticed ;)). Our school will be gifting over 130 kids this holiday season thanks to this TVDSB initiative. Yay!

A huge thank you to all who participated in the Budding Artists fundraiser—the teachers for organizing, the students for creating and the families for purchasing these wonderful works of art. The orders have been submitted and we’ll send a note to the community when the items arrive.

Thank you to everyone who perused or purchased at the Scholastic Book Fair. The H&SA is so grateful that teacher/librarian extraordinaire Ms. Robertson organized this literacy boosting (and maybe also, fancy pen/poster purchasing!) fundraiser for the Library Learning Commons. And we’d like to thank the wonder-ful parent/sibling/grandparent volunteers who took the time out of their busy days to support such a great cause—Steph, Catalina, Jessie, Jana, Sophie, Shannon, and Jane. Go team!

We’d like to hear more from you! We’re tailoring the monthly meetings to include:

1. 20 minutes for Mr. MacGregor’s update 2. 10 minutes for our School Council chair Denise Goens 3. 30 minutes for H&SA update 4. 30 minutes of chitty chit chat about things that matter most to our Mountsfield families Have questions about academics, clubs, fundraising, where to find all of those lost and found items? This is a chance for us to work together and figure it all out. Bring a timer and see if we can stick to an agenda!

See you in January on the 13th from 7-8:30 p.m. in the Library Learning Commons (lower level).

Enjoy the winter break.

Your friendly, neighbourhood H&SA and School Council
