The Boulevard Montmartre at Night Camille Pissarro was a major figure inthe history of Impressionism. His continuing belief in the value of independentgroup exhibitions and his commitment to representing landscapes under specificweather and light conditions made him, in some ways, the quintessentialImpressionist. By the end of his life he was beginning to gain critical recognitionand praise, an estimation that continued throughout the 20th century, whencritics and scholars consistently acknowledged his place as a keyfigure in Impressionism.

In a career that spanned the late 19th and early 20th centuries,Auguste Rodin (French, 1840–1917) was deeply inspired by traditionyet rebelled against its idealized forms, introducing innovativepractices that paved the way for modern sculpture. He believed thatart should be true to nature, a philosophy that shaped his attitudes tomodels and materials. Many know Rodin for the controversies surroundingcertain of his works, such as the scandals around The Age of Bronze orthe Monument to Honoré de Balzac, and for his unfinished projects, mostfamously The Gates of Hell. .

was a stylistic movement of painting that emerged in the 1870’s in France and became popular throughout Europe for the next fifty years. The movement originated with a group of radical Parisian painters who gained fame during the period for their violation of the rigorous rules of academic painting, which fa-voured carefully finished, realistically precise paintings at the time. These artists were initial-ly heavily criticised and could not exhibit at the prestigious Paris Salon, and so went about founding the Société Anonyme Coopérative des Artistes Peintres, Sculpteurs, Graveurs, (the Cooperative and Anonymous Association of Painters, Sculptors, and Engravers), where they could exhibit independently. The forerun-ners of the Impressionist movement shared interests in painting ‘from life’, outside in the countryside, favouring landscape scenes and social situations over grand, overly dramatic scenes. However, unlike Realism, which placed all importance on representational honesty and a photograph-like appearance, Impressionism was not just a movement, but it introduced a whole new visual and technical styles for painting.

The term “Lost Generation” becameassociated with a group of writers and artists in Paris, France, during the early 1920s. The famous core of Lost Generation writers was a group of American expatriates. Among them was Hemingway, who had driven ambulances

in Italy during the Great War. In Paris, heassociated with mentor Gertrude Stein and other friends who profoundly influenced his work. His novels The Sun Also Rises and Farewell to Arms  were both written in the late 1920s and follow the turbulent lives of characters living through World War I or in

its aftermath.

Identify the style ofyour own favourite gin,

and the dominantflavours in it. We suggested

pairings below.

The history of tonic water begins in 17th century Peru when Spanish colonists discovered a treatment for malaria in the bark of the quina quina tree.

In the 18th century Carolus Linnaeus chose to classify the qui aquina tree as genus "cinchona (sĭngkō`nə) or chin-chona  (chĭngkō`nə), name for species of the genus  Cinchona,  " in honor of the legendary lady. Cinchona bark is extremely bitter, so someone mixed it with sugar and carbonated water to make it more palatable. In 1858, it was first marketed commercially. Around the same time, gin was shedding its less-than-positive reputation to become a more respectable drink. Thus, a classic was born.
