Opens with a blank screen which creates a sinister atmosphere. Non diegetic sound of petrol station starts suddenly as the title of the short reveals itself to the audience showing conventions of a thriller as it jumps quickly on the screen with the intention to startle the audience. Jump cuts to next shot.

Wide angle shows almost 3D image of petrol count, this could be seen as a countdown of some sorts once again creating a sinister atmosphere as the numbers change. Diegetic sound of petrol being pumped

This shot also reveals the location as it’s at a petrol station as you can tell from the petrol count. Camera jump cuts to next shot.

Blurred mid shot of mysterious figure, the blurred image allows the audience to wonder who the person is as the tense opening of this short continues, showing key conventions of a thriller. Diegetic sound of the constant humming noise of the petrol pumps continuing from the last shot. The figure walks towards the camera as it begins to focus.

As the figure walks to the photo it creates a close up shot revealing the character. The fact that she is female could take away the sinister atmosphere due to stereotypes but she is young and has her hood up the mise en scene could represent her as violent. Diegetic sound of the constant humming noise of the petrol pumps continuing from the last shot. Background is blurred to focus on the unveiled character suggesting importance. Once again jump cut is used to transition to next shot.

Tracking mid shot seeming like a pov from the female character, showing two males barge into the shop; as the diegetic sound of the bell ringing it foreshadows events taking place ahead. Mise en scene is used to show violence within the prop of a gun used, showing this genre to be a thriller. Jump cuts to next shot to perhaps keep the pace and create a panicking atmosphere. The costume of the male characters in all black also represents them as violent.

Page 2: Movie analysis 2

As the character enters the shop we get to this, a over the shoulder shot of one of the robbers pointing a gun at the teen, this violent scene contains loud dialogue and non-diegetic sound of tense music. The use of vulgar language by the robber once again portrays him as violent. The robber is blurred but the gun is clear suggesting the gun is the main focus in this shot. It then jump cuts to the next shot.

In this next shot the hooded teen is closed up by the camera blurring the robber and the gun and the use of camera, blank facial expression and headphones cancelling out background sound it suggest the teen is in a world of his own once again basing it of a youth stereotype. Diegetic sound of music coming through headphones.

Diegetic sound of aggressive dialogue and this is a negative stereotype on black people linking them to crime. Close up of the shot shows the aggression on his face once again playing on the violent stereotype of black people.

This point of view shot reveals the people driving the parked car, and adds comedic value as these two characters seem to be on drugs based on their facial expression revealed by the close up POV. Breaking the tense atmosphere, the diegetic sound of dialogue introduces the new characters comedic personality then jump cuts to the pov character to reveal him too. The use of these characters being young represents them based on key stereotypes as they seem to be irresponsible.

This close up shot revealing a new character also adds comedic value as the character seem to be on drugs based on their facial expression revealed by the close up. But through dialogue you see tension through the characters and volume increases to emphasise the argument. Also music in the background contributes to the youth stereotypes but also adds comedic value, then jumps to next shot of him going to the shop.

Diegetic sound of aggressive dialogue and this is a negative stereotype on black people linking them to crime. Close up of the shot shows the aggression on his face once again playing on the violent stereotype of black people.

Close up shot of the phone shows that the character is on the phone revealing this to the viewer but not to the rest of the characters explaining the confusion of the robbers. This adds humour to the scene through the dialogue used between the characters on the phone, but once again the use of aggressive dialogue from the robbers breaks the humour and creates a hostile atmosphere in the scene.

As the shot jump cuts to this you see which robber is shouting and using aggressive dialogue. The prop of the gun supports the use of aggressive tone in the sound of dialogue. Then the shot jump cuts to the next shot.

This next shot of a close up shows the other end of the phone call and once again humour is shown through dialogue. There is low key lighting and because of this it creates a menacing atmosphere, but this is contradicted by the dialogue.

A quick jump cut comes to a low angle shot of the bell for the shop door. This shot lasts barely a second as this hostile situation gets more intense. The diegetic sound of the bell almost startles the viewer and this quickly jumps to the next shot.

Page 4: Movie analysis 2

Because of the quick jump cut the next shot is a mid-shot of the robber firing his gun, the expression on his face is captured perfectly it shows the robbers aggressive character and intent to kill. The diegetic sound of the bell rings on to this shot but it’s overpowered by the gunshot. The shot then once again jump cuts to the next.

In the final shot this over the shoulder angle shows the shocked face of the shop keeper as the character in the grey hoodie went about normally. The diegetic sound of dialogue of the character buying something creates a sense of normality being put back into the scene as it comes to a close.

The sound cuts to create a realisation of who was shot, the victim was the accomplice. This close up shows the shocked expression on the victims face and seems to make the viewer empathise with the character as time seems to stand still with the lack of sound. In the background you see the most of the words warning and security foreshadowing and juxtaposing the events that took place.

As the victim and robbers are nowhere to be seen the main character is confused as to what just happened once again representing the youth as unaware. This close up from looking into the shop window shows the characters blank expression. No sound is still going on maybe to describe the atmosphere as shock to perhaps the shop keeper but also the normality to the character in this shot.
