Colonel David “Mickey” Marcus was a

Jewish-American military officer, lawyer,

Commissioner of the New York City

Department of Correction, commander

of the fledgling Israeli Defense Forces

during the 1948 Arab-Israeli war, and a

member of Union Temple.

Cast a Giant Shadow tells the story of

Colonel Marcus’s efforts to prepare Israeli

troops to defend the newly declared state against the invasion of its Arab neighbors. Many

of the soldiers under his command, newly arrived in Israel, were determined and enthusias-

tic, but untrained. The cast includes Kirk Douglas as Colonel Marcus, Yul Brynner, John

Wayne, Michael Douglas, Angie Dickinson and Frank Sinatra.
