When you push until you can’t go any farther or faster, what exactly is holding you back? Whether you’re climbing mountains, running marathons or hoisting weights, physiologists have long debated what really defines our limits. A mounting body of evidence suggests that the brain plays a greater role than previously thought, even for limits that feel purely physical. That doesn’t mean “it’s all in your head,” of course—but it does mean that exploring the brain’s role opens new avenues for pushing the limits of human performance.

Live Event: April 8, 1:00-2:00 p.m. EDT Live Q&A: April 8, 2:00-2:30 p.m. EDT

Exertional illness remains a considerable threat to both civilian and tactical athletes. This session will review the most common forms of exertional illness confronting athletes (e.g., exertional sudden cardiac death, exertional heat illness, exertional rhabdomyolysis, exercise collapse associated with sickle cell trait and exercise associated hyponatremia) and detail current evidence-based strategies for prevention.

Live Event: April 9, 4:00-5:00 p.m. EDT Live Q&A: April 9, 5:00-5:30 p.m. EDT

Engage with fellow Summit attendees and current ACSM President NiCole Keith, Ph.D., FACSM, during this interactive lecture. You’ll hear about Dr. Keith’s pathway to ACSM leadership, including her insights on what characteristics are important for leaders. She’ll also highlight two key initiatives, the ACSM Mentoring Women to Fellowship and Leadership and Diversity Training Programs, that provide pathways to leadership for members who have been historically underrepresented. Finally, you’ll join Dr. Keith in a brainstorm session to create a mentoring program for the annual Summit.

Live Event: April 9, 8:00-9:00 a.m. EDT Live Q&A: April 9, 9:00-9:30 a.m. EDT

High-Intensity Interval Training (HIIT) has been widely used by athletes for decades and recently become a top trend in the health and fitness industry. Growing evidence suggests this type of exercise may be highly beneficial for individuals with chronic disease conditions, including those with chronic heart failure. This session will focus on why this modality of training may be ideal for heart failure patients and how to design a HIIT program to maximize benefit and reduce risk.
