The Veterans Sanctuary is a unique program that offers a comprehensive and unequaled system of support to our nation’s finest as they transition from military to campus life. Our mission is simple—offer first-class service for those who have served their country.

In recognition of our efforts, G.I. Jobs Magazine recently listed Idaho State University as a Military Friendly School for 2010, an honor bestowed upon the top 15 percent of colleges, universities and trade schools in the United States.

The American Legion also presented ISU and the Veterans Sanctuary a national citation for work with veterans. Only one such award is given in each state annually.

To become a sponsor of the Sanctuary, a business can either start a scholarship, offer veterans attending ISU reduced prices for goods or services, or provide a substantial benefit to the program itself. This is a win-win situation for veterans and the participating businesses, which will receive a window cling denoting sponsorship. Such recognition increases business by boosting sales to veterans and customers within the greater community who support veterans. A list of participating businesses will be provided to all ISU veterans to encourage their patronage. The Sanctuary includes a team of dedicated representatives, some of whom are veterans themselves. The team has a veterans coordinator to assist with G.I. Bill educational benefits and a campus liaison to facilitate contacts within ISU’s various departments and programs as well as in the greater Pocatello community.

The program features cohort general education classes for veterans taught by faculty members who are veterans. There is cohort housing, a living-learning community, on campus. Located in the former Nichols Hall, it is one of the first veterans’ residence halls on a university campus in the U.S. The dormitory-style area will have on-site tutoring available. In addition, an Armed Forces Veterans Club which began at ISU–Idaho Falls in Fall 2009 has since expanded to Pocatello.

The Sanctuary is partnering with local businesses to provide scholarships to veterans who exhaust their benefits before obtaining degrees. Veterans who attend ISU will have every opportunity to graduate. Many of these businesses also offer members of the program reduced prices on goods and services.
