Page 2: Moving Forward in the Treatment of Pediatric Neurological

Course DescriptionThis course is designed to increaseproviders’ understanding of the basicscience, evidence and research in pediatricneurological disorders and how researchtranslates into clinical practice. The formatwill combine large-group plenary sessionswith breakout sessions of smaller groups.Such a format allows communication andinterchange among professionals fromdifferent disciplines who work with patientswho have neurological disorders.

The first two days will focus primarily oninjuries to the developing brain and centralnervous system. The third day will focuson congenital and acquired injuries to theneuromuscular/peripheral nervous system.

Overall Course Objectives: To identify current scientific advancesin the area of pediatric neurologicaldisorders

To translate research into clinical carefor patients who have cerebral palsy, acquired brain injuries, neuromusculardisorders and other neurologicalconditions

To examine the clinical benefits of inter-disciplinary management of childrenwith neurological disorders

To examine emerging trends in thetreatment of patients with neurologicdisorders and injuries

To understand the lifelong needs ofpatients who have childhood neuro-logical disorders

Accreditation and Certificatesof AttendanceGillette Children’s Specialty Healthcareis accredited by the Minnesota MedicalAssociation to provide continuing medicaleducation (CME) for physicians. Gillettetakes responsibility for the content, qualityand scientific integrity of this activity.

This conference honors the many efforts ofJames R. Gage, M.D., to improve the well-being of children with cerebral palsy.

Dr. Gage attended Northwestern University MedicalSchool and completed a residency in orthopaedicsurgery at the Minneapolis Veterans Administration Hospital in 1971 afterserving in the U.S. Navy. In 1976 the Gage family moved to Connecticut, where Dr. Gage became a pediatric orthopaedist at Newington Children’sHospital. Dissatisfied with the outcomes of care for gait disturbances inchildren with cerebral palsy, Dr. Gage developed an interest in the use ofcomputer technology in the assessment of human walking. After collabo-ration with David Sutherland, M.D., of San Diego Children’s Hospital, Dr.Gage encouraged United Technologies Research Center to build one of theworld’s first fully automated motion laboratories at Newington Children’s.A second laboratory followed at Gillette in 1987, and Dr. Gage returned toMinnesota in 1990 to serve as Gillette’s medical director. But these simplefacts are inadequate.

Dr. Gage’s unwillingness to accept mediocrity as inevitable profoundlychanged the care of children with cerebral palsy. He insisted that thebaffling complexity of spastic walking could be approached by the applica-tion of basic tools: careful examination of a child, measurement by motionanalysis, establishment of goals, single-event surgeries that correctedmultiple problems at once, good rehabilitation, and meticulous measure-ment and assessment of treatment outcomes. Dr. Gage solicited theinvolvement of individuals from multiple clinical domains, including neuro-logy, neurosurgery, physiatry, physical therapy, mechanical engineering andorthotics. As a result of his persistence and diligence, the current conceptof first managing a child’s tone and then addressing the skeletal and mus-cular consequences of that tone emerged.

It has been our great fortune to be Dr. Gage’s students and colleaguesday in and day out. Through his willingness to teach and collaborate, hisconcepts have spread, to the benefit of countless children.
