Your Strengths: Example

My skills, according to the Clifton Strengthsfinder, are Achiever, Strategic, Creativity, Focus, Positivity, and Individualization. What are YOUR strengths? How do these lead to your accomplishments?

Take Action: Go buy the book “Strengthsfinder 2.0,” then take the test at Strengthsfinder.com (hint: Bookfinder.com has it cheap!)

How do you get recognition for your accomplishments?

Create friendships with board members/sister nonprofit peers

Show them what you're doing. Soak in their praise. Ask for a recommendation and reference. Ask them to recommend a mentor for your

nonprofit career.

Start by recognizing others. Ask HR if you could create a “nonprofit staffer of the month” program to encourage a culture of recognizing and celebrating little victories. (Or do this at your monthly staff meeting.)

How do you get recognition for your accomplishments?

Figure out which metrics matter, which are important to show not just competence but mastery at your current job or volunteer position.

Keep meticulous records of each of your victories. Put it in your board reports as well as Keep it in a safe file folder at home. Ask bosses and co-workers to write you recommendations

on LinkedIn based on this evidence.

What are some of the best ways to step into leadership roles at nonprofits?

Lie #1: You Will Move Up If You Work Hard

Lie #2: Show passion for the mission and you'll be promoted.

Lie #3: You'll be promoted from within. Just Hang In There.

What are some of the best ways to step into leadership roles at nonprofits?

Become a board member Make a lateral move If you are at a large, bureaucratic nonprofit, getting an

advanced degree can be persuasive to superiors. Search idealist.org for new small nonprofits, become a

consultant and help them.

According to the Bridgespan Group, most nonprofit staff are NOT being groomed for leadership, and only 33% of the time do people from inside the nonprofit even attempt to fill senior leadership level positions.

Case Studies:

According to Chief Development Officer of the Texas Historical Commission, Lisa Avra, volunteering on the board led to her becoming the Executive Director of an organization, which led to bigger opportunities down the road.

From the Executive Director of CASA Highland Lakes, Sue Thornton, she researched the organization and started to act like she had the job and work for them before she had the job.

Case Studies:

According to the President of Texas Association for Nonprofit Organizations (TANO), Barry Silverberg, he turned a situation around and made his own opportunity.

From Outreach Coordinator for the City of Portland's Independent Police Review, Irene Konev, she exhaustively researched the field and job before the interviews. She beat out 200 other candidates for the job, without a college degree and having never worked for the City before.

How can you get more responsibility and learning opportunities at your job?

Getting More Responsibility

Start to volunteer for extra tasks. For Example: If you're the temp, Americorps Fellow or Development Associate, volunteer to help with the mailing or event.

Talk with HR or your boss about taking on more responsibility. Ask about what opportunities are available for advancement if you do.

Volunteer at another nonprofit's event and talk with staff, network with people at the event, see who you can meet.

How can you get more responsibility and learning opportunities at your job?

Learning Opportunities

Step 1: Tell your boss you want more learning opportunities. Ask your boss how much money is in the training budget for you to attend training webinars.

Step 2: Research conferences, webinars, and workshops in your area or virtually. Just like this one.

Step 3: If your boss won't pay, go on your own dime and network like crazy. You need to be in a workplace that believes in promoting from within and nurturing talent. It will also look good on your resume to show that you kept learning.
