BADKAN TM plusTIBETAN FORMULA

BADKAN TM plus contains glucosamine which is the basic molecule of all glycosaminoglycans (GAGs). Glucosamine is an important building block in the metabolism of cartilage. In rheuma-tology, the use of GAGs as food supplements has proven its efficacy in the treatment of arthro-sis. Glucosamine is a constituent of connective tissue, of the ligaments and the joint cartilage and is also present in synovial fluid. BADKAN TM plus contains glucosamine and botanical medicine.

Application: joint arthrosis due to age or weight bearing.

Recommended intake: unless otherwise prescribed, 2 - 3 times daily 2 capsules, with a suf-ficient amount of liquid, to be taken after a meal. It is recommended to use boiled water, cooled down to a lukewarm temperature. BADKAN TM plus may be taken over a period of several months. It should be taken for at least 12 weeks.

Side effects: BADKAN TM plus Is generally well tolerated. No side effects are known to date.

Important notes: Not to be used as sole source of nutrition. Keep outside of the reach of small children. Do not use during pregnancy and breast feeding.

Interactions: possible interactions between glucosamine and coumarin-based anticoagulants. Glucosamine may lead to a potentiation of the anti-blood-clotting effect of such medications.

BADKAN TM plus is obtained from carefully selected raw materials and is submitted to a strin-gent quality control.

Ingredients: D-Glucosamine sulfate sodium chloride, rose hips, cardamom, black pepper, cloves, nutmeg, marigold, liquorice root, manganese sulfate, hydroxypropylmethylcellulose (capsule shell).

BADKAN TM plus - an effective arthrosis treatment

Dr. Simon FeldhausGeneral PractitionerParamed Kompetenzzentrum für GanzheitsmedizinCH 6342 Baar / Switzerland

Based on my therapeutic experience and considering the composition of the product, BADKAN TM plus is effective, suitable, safe and well-tolerated in the treatment of finger polyarthrosis, rhizarthrosis and erosive finger-joint arthrosis.A highly beneficial effect can be observed in case of polyarthrosis / polyarthralgia of the small joints. Approximately half of all women and man aged 55 or more suffer from arthrosis (osteoarthritis) resulting in impaired movement of the small joints. Furthermore, arthrosis of the thumb saddle joint can be very painful and is perceived by the patient as a debilitating affliction.

Manifest complaints of the locomotor system

Finger polyarthrosis Degenerative disease (osteoarthritis) of the small joints of the hands and feet. Frequent, painful, affliction due to abrasive wear

Rhizarthrosis Degenerative disease (osteoarthritis) of the saddle joint of the thumb. Most frequent affection of the hand due to abrasive wear, painful and leading to considerable Impairment of movement.

Coxarthrosis Degenerative disease (osteoarthritis) of the hip joint. Painful when weight bearing.

Gonarthrosis Degenerative disease (osteoarthritis) of the knee joint. Abrasive wear of the cartilage-lined joint surfaces.

Rapid effect leading to a marked improvement of the quality of life In a practical observation under medical supervision, performed at the Paramed Center for Holistic Medicine, BADKAN TM plus was tested in ambulatory patients with joint complaints. The aim was an extensive and controlled documentation of the efficacy and tolerance of BADKAN TM plus in patients with degenerative joint diseases. For this aim, the product was administered to ambulatory patients chosen at random, who had visited the consultation with joint complaints. Over a period of several months, the course of the disease was observed under medical supervision during a number of protocolled visits.

Dosage2 - 3 x daily 2 capsules of BADKAN TM plus, taken with an adequate amount of liquid after a meal.

Badkan TM plus: analysis of the results In more than 100 patients, the findings showed

• an outstanding effect in relation to the small joint polyarthrosis / polyarthralgia complex

• good results especially in case of complaints touching the small finger joints and in case of rhizarthrosis, particularly concerning the pain, even after a short period of treatment

• a marked improvement in mobility

After the treatment with BADKAN TM plus was stopped at the end of the observation period, approximately 60% of patients witnessed a recurrence of their pain. If treatment was subse-quently reinstated in the same patients, the response was again positive to the same extent. This must be interpreted as evidence of efficacy, especially since this rapid and convincing effect was accompanied by a concomitant improvement of the quality of life.

These positive findings show that the rapid onset of action, and the fact that the product was well tolerated in all cases without exception, may motivate even difficult patients to comply with a plan of treatment. In the meantime, long-term results are now also available, with an average period of treatment of more than 2 years, and they again confirm the positive experience.

Based on our therapeutic experience and in view of the composition of the product, BADKAN TM plus is effective, suitable, safe and well-tolerated when used for the treatment of finger polyarthrosis, rhizarthrosis and erosive finger-joint arthrosis. Furthermore, the product is also suitable for the hip and knee joints and has established itself, in a remarkably short time span, as a first choice medication even for patients that had previously been treated without thera-peutic success.

Boundary layer between cartilage and boneGlucosamine (obtained for BADKAN TM plus from crab shells) is the common name (INN) of 2-Amino-2-deoxyglucose. It is thus a derivate of D-glucose, from which it diverges only through the substitution of the hydroxyl group by an amino group at the second carbon atom.Glucosamine sulfate (GS) is synthesized by the healthy young organism itself from nutrients. It fulfills an essential role as a basic component not only of joint cartilage, ligaments, tendons and bone structures, but also of connective tissue and of the arterial wall.

NOTE

In patients with finger polyarthrosis, Badkan TM plus lead to a marked improvement and beneficial effect on daily activities. This in conjunction with the positive effect on pain and the improvement in life quality. (Results controlled by use of the Dreiser-Index).

Glucosamine

5

The application of glucosamine conforms to the current recommendations of the Europe-an League against Rheumatism (EULAR) and the European/American OARSI (Osteoarthritis Research Society International).Glucosamine is part of the group of the DMOAD (disease modifying osteoarthritis drugs) and counts as a chondroprotective drug (substances with the capacity to coun-teract cartilage degeneration). The foundation rests on the various functions of glucosamine, which corresponds to the ba-sic molecular unit of the glycosaminoglycans (GAGs) also known as mucopolysaccharides.(Glucosamine is the favored substrate for the synthesis of the proteoglycans into which it is incorporated; Novyszewski et al. Arthritis Rheum, 2001).

A lasting GAG-deficiency, however, not only leads to joint problems but also to arterial calcification. A partial loss of the glycos-aminoglycan film weakens the arterial endothelia, and the resulting endothelial lesions form sites on which foam cells (differentiated macrophages) and lipoproteins (LDL) attach, thereby increasing the risk of thrombosis. It is remarkable to observe that the capacity of the mesenchy-mal cells to form glycosaminoglycans (GAGs) increases when extracellular glycosaminoglycans are supplied. [1].

INFO

At the boundary level between cartilage and bone are found chondroplasts which release chondrocytes to the cartilage. The chondrocytes allow for a regular build-up of cartilage since they produce cartilage-forming substances. An essen-tial building block is glucosamine, which possesses a high water-binding capac-ity. Glucosamine nourishes the cartilage, thereby making it into an ideal buffer ca-pable of protecting the bones from wear and abrasion. Among other factors, it is especially the synovial fluid (joint lubri-cant), formed by the joint membranes, that is important for the functional prop-erties of the cartilage. The synovial fluid is rich in hyaluronic acid, a water-binding substance, consisting for a large part of glucosamine.

NOTE

Polyanionic glycosaminoglycans, combined with polyphenol-containing anti-oxidative vegetal components, are seen as a hopeful future possibility of treatment of arthropathy and atherosclerosis.

Vegetal components of BADKAN TM plus

PepperThe dried fruits of the tropical climbing plant Piper nigrum have been intensively used for centuries as a spice that contains piperine, chavicine, camphor oil, rhamnetin and quercetine. These are important secondary vegetal substances that are part of the group of the flavonoids. In Tibetan medicine and dietetics, pepper is used in case of muscle arthritis and swellings of hands and feet. Tibetan medicine uses the active principles of Piper nigrum against the uneasy feeling of “muscle falling off the bone”.

CardamomCardamom generally designates the seeds or the dried seed capsules of the reed-like shrub Elettaria cardamomum. Because of their fragrant aroma and sharp hot taste, they are widely used as a spice not only in Asian and Arabic cuisine, but also in the western world. In Tibetan medicine and dietetics, cardamom is highly appreciated because of its stimulating actions on the appetite and digestion, its warming and fortifying effects on the stomach.Cardamom seeds are used widely as a spice in Asiatic cuisine and also enter into the composi-tion of tea mixtures. For medicinal purposes, cardamom is applied because of its stimulating effect on digestive processes. WHO and Commission E monographs recommend ca. 1.5 g of the drug per day. [3]

MarigoldA well-known food-related use of marigold blossoms (Calendula officinalis) is as a brightening agent for tea mixtures, based on the intensive yellow-orange color of the petals.Marigold is used for gastro-intestinal complaints and in the food industry. In Tibetan medicine, marigold is applied in case of digestive complaints and for the regeneration of ducts (nerves, blood and lymph vessels).

Marigold blossoms contain 2-10% triterpene saponins of oleanolic acid, triterpene alcohols, flavonoids, carotenoids (esp. lutein and zeaxanthin), allantoin and small quantities of essential oils. [3]

Licorice Licorice is an age-old medicinal plant and the rhizome is used in far eastern medicine to expurgate body toxins. The well-known shrub Glycyrrhiza glabra has a strong ligneous root and has been used for centuries in confectionary because of its characteristic sweet taste. Licorice is obtained from the concentrated and stiff-ened sticky sap produced from cooked and filtered root pulp. The proportion of extract of licorice represents 5 - 30%. Licorice prod-ucts are ingested in gram quantities. The sweetening power of licorice is equivalent to about 150 times that of saccharose. It is therefore used as a taste modifier and sweetener. [4]At higher concentrations, glycyrrhizinate can trigger mineralocorticoid-like effects and result in a disturbance of the electrolyte balance, hypertension and edema. [3]

Rose hipsRose hips are the fruits of the briar rose (Rosa canina). It is really an accessory fruit, harboring several stone-hard tiny nuts, each corresponding to an actual fruit. The shrub originates in Asia, can reach up to 3 meters in height and carries the fleshy fruits. Rose hips are widely used as foodstuffs but also for medicinal purposes, because of their high vitamin C content (immunomodulation). Some studies with patients with inflammatory rheu-matism, arthrosis or chronic back pain, reported that the administration of rose hip powder lead to an improvement of complaints. The anti-inflammatory properties are thought to be due to the galactoplipid content. [5], [6]

INFO

The risk to develop arthrosis increases with age. Degenerative joint modifica-tions are triggered by hormonal changes with advancing age, nutritive factors and mechanical strain. This shows that arthro-sis as a disease is highly relevant for public health. The concomitant presence of depression and arthrosis is the most common combi-nation of chronic disease. [2]

ClovesCloves designate the dried flower buds of the clove tree (Syzygium aromaticum), which have been used for centuries as a popular spice. Cloves contain 16-21% essential oils, of which 70-90% are constituted of the unmatched eugenol and 10-15% of aceteugenol. [7]Clove oil has antibacterial and antioxidative properties. [8] Clove oil is used in dentistry because of its slightly anesthetizing effect. Chewing cloves is a household remedy for toothaches. [9]

NutmegThe nutmeg tree growths to a height of up to 20 meters in Far East Asia. Female trees carry fleshy yellowish fruits, which burst into two parts at maturity. In traditional medicine, nutmeg is used for digestive complaints. Myristica fragrans is used as a spice in the whole world and contains ca. 30% fatty oils, ca. 30% starch and 7-16 % essential oils. The medicinal knowledge of Tibet for an optimized metabolismFrom the Tibetan point of view nutritional disorders can be alleviated by these measures:

• Food and drink • Healing substances and external healing methods • Adaptation of way of life • Questioning of the patient

By questioning the patient, Tibetan practitioners obtain the knowledge on the circumstances under which the nutritional disorder first occurred and on the subjective feeling of the patient. The following symptoms point to a long-lasting energetic deficiency in the nutrition, often in conjunction with a stressful way of life, leading to exhaustion.

• Pain in the joints • Lower back pain • Sensation of cold • Trembling and tension • Flatulence with poor digestion

Tibetan medicinal and dietetic teaching is based on the assumption that three energy systems sustain our bodily functions. A weakened physical or mental constitution denotes a deficiency in the basic energy process, in turn leading to further nutritional disorders (pathological pro-cesses) in the organism and preventing the healing process. It is evident that nutrients also give rise to waste products, and these represent a strain and can only be eliminated from the organ-ism by an expenditure of energy. Waste products that are not completely eliminated remain in all cells and ducts and foster diseases and energetic deficiencies. The properties of nutrients can also mimic diseases and exert a negative influence on the Balance of the Three Energies rLung, mKrispa, Badkan, (Three Principles).

rLung Movement of any kind, on all levels, nervous system, communication of body and mind mKrispa Thermoregulation of the body, digestion and metabolism of food Badkan Energy of the fluid element, regulates all organic liquids and ensures the smooth functioning of the joints. A lack of balance between pro- and anti-oxidants can lead to a series of degenerative diseases such as rheumatism, joint inflammation, cardiovascular disease, or premature aging and oxida-tive cellular lesions. Salvation from the progression of chronic degenerative disease may be found in vegetal antioxidants taken up with food and food supplements.

Thermoregulation

A medicinal substance is any substance that heals. In this respect, Tibetan medicine and dietet-ics proceed from the assumption that the most important approach to healing is to be found in the choice of foodstuffs and spices.

From the Tibetan point of view, chronic disease is caused by dysfunctional digestion. In order for energy-rich nutrients to be taken up by the blood and then by the cells, optimal heat of digestion is indispensable. The recipes of Tibetan medicine give food supplements aimed at optimizing the nutritional plan and adapted to the diagnostic findings.

If the heat of digestion is impaired, the taste of the nutrient is not perceived properly. In case of a low heat of digestion, a glass of warm water before the meal can help. The heat of digestion can only be optimized by a selection of combined vegetal ingredients that serves the stomach as the king of the body organs.

NOTE

According to Tibetan medicine, the different flavors ensure a constant digestive heat and the balanced functioning of the entire digestive process.

Badkan Badkan signifies, in Tibetan medicine, “Energy of the liquid element” and regulates all organic liquids. Badkan ensures the unimpaired functioning of small and large joints and represents the aspect of nature that gives raise to growth and reproduction. Badkan represents the diges-tive organs responsible for the constructive metabolism and vitalizes the cells. Badkan is the manifestation of the elements Earth and Water.

Tibetan medicine and dietetics is a science of soft natural substances. Badkan TM plus represents a popular mixture with characteristic taste and savor, formulated on the basis of a compilation of authentic Tibetan texts.

Johanna Lutz (Switzerland)

As the only teaching facility of its type in Switzerland, the Paramed Akademie AG offers a training course leading to a diploma as a Natural Health Professional (NHP) in Tibetan Medicine. The holistic worldview and medical concept of Tibetan medicine encompasses body, soul and mind. Students are introduced to the philosophy of Tibetan medicine and learn to widen their perspective and their perceptions. The process-oriented teaching in-cludes, apart from the various modules of Tibetan medicine, massage, Buddhist psychol-ogy, meditation and Tibetan yoga.

NOTE

To the element Earth correspond the olfactory sense, all solid structures of the human body, our thoughts and our feelings. To the element Water corresponds everything moving and fluid. This includes blood, lymph, saliva, gastric juices, and the synovial fluid. The gustatory sense and the lung also relate to the element Water. The digestive system, the metabolism, the visual sense and the intelligence are related to the element Fire. The skin, sense of touch, peristalsis and muscles relate to the element Air. No particular correspondence is attributed to Space as an element, since it belongs to all other elements.

INFO

The assessment of the impairment of a patient due to arthrosis rests, on the one hand, on the pain (evaluated by means of a visual scale) and on the other hand on the functional impair-ment of the joints concerned. In the case of finger joints the Dreiser Index represents a valuable tool. The Dreiser Index (0-30) is based on a question-naire with questions relating to ten important functions of the hand. [12]

(An introduction to Tibetan Medicine - Origins and Practice…)

The Tibetan “Art of Healing” rests on the one hand on the result of a long line of empirical observations of the healthy and the sick human being, of his natural environment and the therapeutic possibilities. On the other hand, it is inspired by the will to ground its explana-tory approach in a holistic and rational theory that encompasses physiology, pathology and therapeutics. Tibetan medicine deserves to be recognized for what it wants to be, i.e. an Art or a Science in the widest sense of the word. Its humoral physiology leads it to view health and disease as dynamic, polymorph and ever-present processes, interactions and milieus, and not as structures or as pathogenic elements that can be viewed in isolation, as local lesions. Such a perspective is also advocated today, for instance, in immunology. The ideal of medicine, however, is prevention, which can be achieved via nutrition and medicinal preparations that optimize the digestive process, strengthen the organism and ensure the harmonious equilib-rium between the bodily fluids. If a treatment becomes necessary, it should aim at the long-term reinstatement of the global balance, to be achieved by cautious actions, thereby taking into account not only the central factor but also all others that are in an interactive relation-ship with it. As so often emphasized in Tibetan treatises, it is also an imperative of this therapy to avoid inducing any iatrogenic disturbances.”
