Manpower to Horsepower

Mission: Manpower to Horsepower is a non-profit organization meeting the transitional needs of post-combat veterans by creating an atmosphere of friendship and appreciation through the sport of racing.

Vision: Our vision is to provide a hands-on approach to care and recovery. We will build upon each individual’s assets, strengths, health, and competence so they can achieve a sense of mastery over their condition, while regaining a meaningful, constructive sense of membership in the civilian community.

Our Program Post combat veterans will have the opportunity to work on and maintain the race cars at race shops that will serve as transitional rehabilitation centers as well as fully functioning race shops.

Manpower to Horsepower has partnered with the USO-NC and is working with area bases and Wounded Warrior battalions. Together the USO and Manpower to Horsepower plan to replicate the program in Mooresville, NC and take it nationwide.

This program breaks all limits by providing handicapped, disabled, or traumatically brain injured veterans the thrill of a lifetime in cars maintained and worked on by our wounded heroes.

The Psychosocial Condition of the Post-combat Veteran

According to a study done by the University of Florida, a staggering 31% of soldiers returning from active duty in Afghanistan or Iraq and seen in veterans administration medical centers between 2001-2005 were diagnosed with mental health or psychosocial conditions.

The prevalence of Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) and Mild Traumatic Brain Injury (MTBI) in returning combat veterans is estimated at 20%, with the estimate climbing to 40% in those that were wounded.

It is estimated that a significant number of additional veterans suffering from such disorders go undiagnosed and untreated.
