2 The toilet: Gcina Mhlophe Question 1 The Visits: Richard Rive Read the following extract and answer the questions set on it There was a quietness which settled over the flat. It was like that whenever The Student went out and he took the phone off the cradle. The silence surging softly … but first the storm before the calm. The phone , then the revving of that damn engine , then peace. Mark books. Standard Ten compos. Remember, dearest children , a word can denotes 5 ability, whereas may denotes possibility. Can ability. May possibility. Can- ability, May –ability. He repeated it mentally until a rhythm formed. May- possibility sounded clumsy, so he changed canability, to mayability. But that was wrong. Sacrificing meaning for rhythm. Maybe he could use it on his seniors. His students. The student? 10 He got up, uncomfortable at the triviality of his ideas. Must be getting old. Mr Chips. Old at forty- five. Young at forty –five. He walked to the kitchen to make some tea and turned on the tap for hot water. The gurgle echoed through the flat. How vacant the place sounded without The Student. How empty when he wasn‟t there. How empty when he was there. A different 15 kind of emptiness. Impossible to speak to him any longer. He was too…too physical. Throwing his weight and looks around. Girls, the telephone and the Honda. Looks and muscle. A student of rags and tatters. He switched on the stove reflectively, and put on the water, Mayability, 20 canability. Canability, mayability. It was then that he heard the knocking at the door.

THE TOILET: GCINA MHLOPHE

Read the following extract and answer the set questions

On this day , it was raining quite hard , so I thought I would shelter in the toilet until the rain had passed. I knocked first to see if there was anyone inside. As there was no reply, I pushed the door open and went in. It smelled little- a dryish kind of a smell, as if the toilet was not used all that often, but it was quite clean compared to many “Non-European” toilets I knew. 5 The floor was painted red and the walls were cream –white. It did not look like it had been painted for a few years. I stood looking around , with the rain coming down very hard on the zinc roof. The noise was comforting – to know I had escaped wet, only a few drops had got me. The plastic bag in which I carried my book and purse and neatly folded 10 pink handkerchief was a little damp , but that was because I had used it to cover my head when I ran to the toilet. I pulled my dress down a little so that I would not get creased when I sat down . The closed lid of the toilet was going to be my seat for many mornings after that. I was really lucky to have found that toilet, because the winter was very cold. Not that it was any warmer in ,there but once I‟d closed the door it used to be a little less windy.
