He was hot for a while, and then his career petered out in the 80s, until a role in 1986 movie Y revitalized (good dose of oxygen even) his career, and also possibly caused him to slum for the next twenty years in similar roles.

Apart from a long (not necessarily always distinguished) acting career, he also directed a handful, his first being the most famous.

X is a favourite of the Coen Bros., part of their clique of actors in the old days. He also happens to be a favourite of Spike Lee, appearing in Miracle at St. Anna, Clockers and Do the Right Thing, amongst other things.

Probably best known for a lead role in a Palm D’Or winner (for which he also won Best Actor), his first (uncredited) role was as an extra in Raging Bull.

Peter Lorre probably passed on the googly-eyed baton to X, who like Kevin Bacon is often bandied about for Six Degrees games. Another favourite of the Coens, he’s also popped up in a couple of Tarantino flicks.

In April 2001, while shooting the film Domestic Disturbance in North Carolina, X was stabbed three times while intervening in a bar fight at Firebelly Lounge between his friend Vince Vaughn, screenwriter Scott Rosenberg and a local man, who allegedly instigated the brawl.

A firefighter in the 80s, the day after 9/11, X went to his old firehouse to volunteer for recovery work at Ground Zero. That week, he worked 12 hour shifts digging through the rubble, while refusing to do interviews or have his picture taken.Who?
