MQHR Church Renovation – 2020.04.23 Budget: $470,000 Background: MQHR Church, built over 24 years ago, has not had a significant update since it was originally built. The church carpet is original and has been showing its age for several years now. The pews are original, the fabric seats are very worn (holes, stretch marks, stains), there are numerous broken kneelers, and some of the veneer has been damaged. As we approach our 25 th anniversary in the building, it is time to update the facility. Description: The update will primarily consist of new flooring in the entire church building (main assembly area, gathering area, classrooms and adjacent rooms) and new pews. As we install those major items, we will also address some smaller issues that make sense at this time. We are working with a professional interior designer to pick colors and materials – the colors (primarily blue and grey) are intended to emphasize the colors in the stained-glass window behind the altar. Key items included are: New flooring throughout the church – the plan is for carpet in the aisles, vinyl tile under the pews, ceramic tile in the gathering area, carpet in the adjacent rooms around the gathering area, and ceramic tile for the altar. If the budget allows, we will also replace the flooring in the music rooms and classrooms. New Pews – solid wood construction, which should improve cleanliness over the current fabric seats, and eliminate the issues of separation of finger joined wood and particle board. Pew Layout Improved – the new layout allows for in-pew seating for people with walkers or anyone needing some extra space, and several spaces in the pews for wheelchairs. One row of pews will have armrests to aid people in standing. The music area space will be increased by removing some of the adjacent pews. The pews in the back of the church will be split and an aisle added for better access to the long pews. Covering over abandoned ceiling speakers Repair/refinish the oak veneer doors in the church Recover acoustical panels with new fabric to match the new color scheme Painting of classrooms, music room, library, and as needed Other minor needs most appropriately addressed during construction Schedule: Construction is planned for May/June/July of 2020. We’ll start with classrooms ABCD, music room, vesting and reconciliation sacristies. Then the library and coat room, gathering area and chapel. The main church will start early in June. If all goes as planned, we should celebrate Mass in the renovated church on August 1, 2020.

MQHR Church Renovation – 2020.04.23 Budget: $470,000 Background: MQHR Church, built over 24 years ago, has not had a significant update since it was

originally built. The church carpet is original and has been showing its age for several years now. The pews are original, the fabric seats are very worn (holes, stretch marks, stains), there are numerous broken kneelers, and some of the veneer has been damaged. As we approach our 25th anniversary in the building, it is time to update the facility.

Description: The update will primarily consist of new flooring in the entire church building (main

assembly area, gathering area, classrooms and adjacent rooms) and new pews. As we install those major items, we will also address some smaller issues that make sense at this time. We are working with a professional interior designer to pick colors and materials – the colors (primarily blue and grey) are intended to emphasize the colors in the stained-glass window behind the altar.

Key items included are:

● New flooring throughout the church – the plan is for carpet in the aisles, vinyl tile under the pews, ceramic tile in the gathering area, carpet in the adjacent rooms around the gathering area, and ceramic tile for the altar. If the budget allows, we will also replace the flooring in the music rooms and classrooms.

● New Pews – solid wood construction, which should improve cleanliness over the current fabric seats, and eliminate the issues of separation of finger joined wood and particle board.

● Pew Layout Improved – the new layout allows for in-pew seating for people with walkers or anyone needing some extra space, and several spaces in the pews for wheelchairs. One row of pews will have armrests to aid people in standing. The music area space will be increased by removing some of the adjacent pews. The pews in the back of the church will be split and an aisle added for better access to the long pews.

● Covering over abandoned ceiling speakers ● Repair/refinish the oak veneer doors in the church ● Recover acoustical panels with new fabric to match the new color scheme ● Painting of classrooms, music room, library, and as needed ● Other minor needs most appropriately addressed during construction

Schedule: Construction is planned for May/June/July of 2020. We’ll start with classrooms

ABCD, music room, vesting and reconciliation sacristies. Then the library and coat room, gathering area and chapel. The main church will start early in June. If all goes as planned, we should celebrate Mass in the renovated church on August 1, 2020.

Questions & Answers Should we be doing this project now? With the coronavirus impact?

We spent a good deal of time over the last month or so in discussion and prayer that led us to conclude that yes, we should proceed with the renovation, in spite of the uncertainty caused by the coronavirus. Some of the key deciding factors in that decision were that (1) $300,000 (roughly 2/3 of the total budget) was donated specifically for the renovation and could not be used for any other purpose, and it was the donor’s desire that we move forward with the project, (2) we’ve already signed contracts and paid deposits on materials totaling $143,000 that would be mostly forfeited if we stopped the project, and (3) this renovation has been needed for a long time. While none of us can predict the future, we felt the church had sufficient resources, either on hand or expected from future offertory, to weather the strain of the coronavirus challenge.

Why are we buying new pews?

The original goal was to eliminate the fabric pew seats for improved cleanliness. With that in mind, we investigated the cost of replacing the seats with solid wood, and refinishing the other parts of the pews. The cost of new wood seats and refinishing was roughly 75% of the cost of all-new pews. Probably just as importantly, some of the companies we considered refused to give us a refurbishment quote as they did not think it would result in a professional looking product. In the end, we decided that all new solid wood pews would be the best solution.

Aren’t the current pews wood?

Our current pews are a mix of wood materials – they contain very little “solid wood”. The seat backs are veneered plywood, the uprights are particle board covered with veneer, the seats are fiberboard and covered with foam/fabric. The kneelers are partially made of engineered wood (smaller pieces of wood glued together with finger joints) that in many cases have fractured. Only the end caps, top rail, and book racks are solid wood. The new pews will not contain particle board, plywood, engineered wood, MDF (medium density fiberboard), or finger joints.

What are we doing with the old pews?

We shared the reuse opportunity for the old pews with the Diocesan Mission Office, other parishes, the Catholic Action Center, Habitat Restore, and the Lexington City Recycling Department. We previously investigated trying to sell the pews in the second-hand market, but because our pews are varied in length, it is very difficult to find a need that matches them. At this time, we’ve not generated interest in reuse, and the old pews will probably go to landfill. ☹

Will the old pews be offered to parishioners?

Yes, if they are willing to haul them away. If you are interested,

1. Before April 30, 2020, call the parish office (859.278.7432) or send an email to [email protected] to get your name on the list. Include your name, email address, phone number, and specify the length of pew you are interested in. Pews vary in length from roughly 8 to 33 feet.

2. If you call or email after April 30th, we will still consider your request, but it will be considered after all the requests received by the deadline.

3. We will disconnect pews from the floor, but you must pick up from the church about the first of June.

4. The pews will be free to you. 5. If we have more interest than pews, we will conduct a drawing to decide who gets

which pew(s). Will we continue to have hymn books?

Yes. Participants in worship will pick up their books from carts at the entrance and return them after the service. There will not be book racks in the new pews.

Who chooses the colors and materials?

We hired an interior designer, Interspace Limited, to choose colors and materials. Will accessibility be improved?

There will be many more spaces for people with special seating needs than in the current church. This includes a variety of seating choices including

● 8 – wheel chair accessible spaces ● 18 – seats designed with additional space ● 12 – individual “high-seat” chairs within the pews ● 8 – individual chairs in the front row that can be rearranged quickly to meet special

needs How will the renovation work in the church impact Masses next summer?

We expect to have some of our weekend Masses in the Gym, and some of our weekday Masses either in the Gym or in other places in the church building. More details to come!

Where did we get the money for this renovation?

The original budget for the modest renovation we had in mind was $170,000, which we had saved over several years as a result of many generous gifts. When we discovered that the pews really needed to be replaced rather than repaired, and that the cost of the flooring was much greater than expected, the project was put on hold. After a few months, a very generous donor approached Fr Dan with an offer of a $300,000 gift specifically restricted for this project, so that we could “do things right” to the glory of God.
