Directions for Use Thank you for purchasing my Valentine’s Day Literature-
Based Craftivity Unit. To utilize this unit, you first must purchase the book
Somebody Loves You, Mr. Hatch by Eileen Spinelli. There are a few different options for using this product: • You can make the tracers out of tag board for the
students to make a craft of Mr. Hatch. They will use your tracers and trace the shapes out of construction paper and then glue the pieces together to create “Mr.
Hatch” • You can also give them the face copy of Mr. Hatch’s
face to color and have them create the heart craft and the hat for Mr. Hatch if you would like the craft to be a little bit easier.
Directions for Writing Activities There are a few different ways to utilize this unit
after you read the story Somebody Loves You, Mr. Hatch.
The students can: • Write a summary about the Beginning, Middle,
and End of the story • I have included a blank heart template for your
use if you would like the students to create a different type of writing assignment related to the story.
• Create a Heart Accordion Booklet to write the sequence of the events in the story (first, next, then, last).
• Use the “chocolate pieces” to write about the
character traits Mr. Hatch possesses in this story. You can also use the “chocolate pieces” to write
about how Mr. Hatch’s character changed from
the beginning of the story to the end of the story. They can color around the edges of the pieces brown to look like chocolate.
These are photographs of the completed Mr. Hatch Craftivity. This is showing the two different Heart
Crafts as well. The left has the character trait chocolates and the heart accordion and the right has
the Summary of the story.
This is also a Mr. Hatch Craftivity, however this
version allows the students to color Mr. Hatch’s face instead
of cutting the pieces out of construction paper. The second picture shows the inside of the heart with the chocolate character trait
pieces.
This is the Heart-shaped Accordion Book where the students can write the sequence of the story using time order words
first, next, then, last.
Mr. Hatch’s
glasses, mouth, and eyebrows.
The glasses are a very delicate because they are so thin. I would suggest cutting them out for the children or printing them on Transparency Film so
you do not have to cut out the center.
Directions for the Heart • In order to create the heart lift-booklet, you need
12x18 red construction paper.
• Fold the construction paper in half.
• Use the heart tracer to trace the heart on the front flap of the construction paper.
• MAKE SURE the heart tracer is touching the TOP of the construction paper FOLD and you do NOT cut on the top fold all the way.
• This will ensure that you have a front and back of your heart-lift booklet.
This shows where we did not cut on the
top of the construction
paper.
