MR PRiCE PRO

Ballito

this winter, the AsP Prime rated mr Price Pro Ballito notches up its fifth season on the wave-rich Kwadukuza coastline, welcoming the world’s finest surfers who will do battle in it’s world-class waves from July 1- 7.

The powerful, barreling surf at Willards Beach has become a favourite surf spot for touring professionals who make their annual pilgrimage from as far afield as the USA, Europe, Australia, New Zealand, Brazil, Japan and Tahiti to test their skills in its spitting tubes and punchy beach break ramps.

Engaged by a fierce contingent of local talent, the internationals will have their work cut out for them as the ‘South Africans’ rise to the challenge with an intimate knowledge of the break and ocean conditions, determined to the keep this prestigious title on home soil.

Currently the international surfing event on African soil, the Mr Price Pro Ballito provides a unique advantage for local surfers hoping to qualify for the elite World Championship Tour in 2014 as it is scheduled at the critical halfway mark on the ASP World Qualifying Series.

So prestigious is this event and so exceptional the talent, that only two South African surfers have clinched victory, Ricky Basnett in 2006 and Jordy Smith in 2010. Basnett would go on to qualify for the prestigious WCT in 2007 largely thanks to this result while Smith would finish with his career best of World No. 2 at the end of 2010.

Boasting a forty-three year legacy, the Mr Price Pro Ballito is also one of the longest running surfing events in the world.

With humble beginnings the event was born from a National Championship in 1966 before turning professional as the Durban 500 in 1966. In 1969 Gunston stepped in to sponsor the event that would become a landmark surfing event around the world.

It was perhaps the heroics of South African surfing icon, Shaun Tomson, at the Gunston 500 that made the biggest impact on professional surfing in South Africa.

The Durbanite’s incredible six-year winning streak from 1973 to 1978, propelled surfing into the public limelight for good filling every inch of sand at Durban’s Bay of Plenty.

Tomson also won the 1977 world title and by the time he retired at the end of 1989, after 13 years in the top 16, he had established himself as a South African surfing icon. Tomson’s iconic reign upped the profile of professional surfing among mainstream consciousness.

At the turn of the new millennium, Mr Price took over the sponsorship role and heralded in a new era in professional surfing history.

In its inaugural year the local contingent had one of their best showings for years with Travis Logie the first South African to feature in the final since 1987, Greg Emslie placing fifth and Shaun Gossman and Noel Rahme, as well as Simon Nicholson, all reaching the quarter-finals.

2001 saw the Mr Price Pro become the first surfing event staged in South Africa to pay out

more than R1 million in prize-money and the crowds flocked to the beach to see the star studded field that included the likes of 1999 world champ Mark Occhilupo (Aus) and eventual 2001 world champion CJ Hobgood.

Between 2002 and 2006, the Mr Price Pro played host to some of the most sensational surfing with the renowned Irons brothers, Andy and Bruce claiming the title in 2004 and 2005 respectively.

By far the most exciting year in the event’s history came in 2006 when Durban surfer Ricky Basnett (Bluff) brought South Africa out of the shadows, becoming the first South African to win the event in 28 years! Basnett defeated Australian Dayan Neve and cloaked in the South African flag was carried up the beach through a sea of adoring supporters.

Growing and evolving with the sport and the surfing lifestyle, the Mr Price Pro decided it was time for change, seeking a brand new arena some 40 minutes North of Durban. In 2009 the

small seaside town of Ballito would become the new home for the prestigious event, now known as the Mr Price Pro Ballito.

In its inaugural year, the event witnessed unprecedented surf with perfect 8-10ft barrels for eight of the ten days that saw some incredible surfing, establishing the event as a firm favourite amongst surfers on the ASP WQS tour.

In 2010 South African Surfing Superstar Jordy Smith stepped up to the podiums highest block, becoming the second South African surfer ever to be crowned Mr Price Pro Champion. Smith defeated junior sensation Casey Grant, his win sending him straight to No. 1 on the ASP One World Rankings and marking the start to a winning streak that would see him go on to win the Billabong Pro Jeffreys Bay a week later.

In 2011 the Mr Price Pro Ballito once again took professional surfing to new heights, upgrading to Prime Status offering a huge prize-purse of US $250 000 (approx. R2.2 million), with $40 000 and an invaluable 6 500 points going to the winner. Now an exclusive 96-man field ensured the Mr Price Pro Ballito was guaranteed to attract the majority of the world’s best surfers.

Those who made the pilgrimage to Ballito that year, were duly rewarded as an unprecedented 10ft perfect swell arrived just in time for the start that saw awe-inspiring rides, breath-taking wipeouts and nail biting ‘come from behind victories’.

Pipeline specialist John John Florence of Hawaii thread through gaping ‘Backdoor’ style barrels to net perfect scores while Californian Kolohe Andino posted the first perfect ten off the first wave of his Round 1 heat. Then there was the style and barrel mastery from big wave specialist Corey Lopez of the USA, whose disappearing, reappearing act behind large curtains of water were an instant crowd pleaser!

elite squadron of professional surfers on the World Championship Tour.

Looking back in history, every single Mr Price Pro Champion including, more recently, Glen Hall (IR), Patrick Gudauskas (USA), Jordy Smith (ZAF) and Tanner Gudauskas (USA) have each gone on to qualify for the WCT the following year.

But it is not just about professional surfing at this prestigious event.

Over the past four years the Mr Price Pro Beach Festival has grown into the biggest beach festival on the African continent welcoming over 70 000 people through its doors in 2012. Boasting a plethora of exciting cultural, retail, lifestyle and sports entertainment the festival offers something for the whole family.

Eventual 2011 event champion Californian Patrick Gudauskas had this to say after his victory, “This is definitely the best event I’ve ever competed in and maybe the best one I’ve ever watched. It has been flawless for a whole week and it could well be by far one of the best locations on tour.”

With a number of refinements to the ASP Prime Tour in 2012, the event has now become critical for surfers hoping to cement their place among the World’s Elite 34 surfers in 2014.

Scheduled at the season’s critical halfway mark, the increase in available equal ninth place finishes (from four to eight) as well as ratings points (1034 to 1300 for an equal 17th and 3120 to 3320 for equal fifth), offers surfers more opportunity to climb the ASP One World rankings ladder by competing in this event. As history shows a win at the Mr Price Pro Ballito launches one into an

Like waves stacked to the horizon on a perfect day there’s no shortage of inspirational stories on the ASP World Tour. From those surfers desperately trying to qualify for the Dream Tour to world title contenders battling it out for the ultimate reward in pro surfing there’s a story of trial and tribulation behind each and every successful campaign.

Scratch beneath the surface of all the chronicles on tour and you will find that Glenn Hall’s fabled tales of qualifying for the elite World Championship Tour stacks up with the best of them.

Hall’s road to the elite World Championship Tour in 2013 is one of pure grit and determination for the former stalwart on the World Qualifying Series (WQS) who has been the ultimate advocate for the slogan ‘never give up.’

Often referred to as trench warfare, the WQS is as tough as pro surfing gets. Hundreds of competitors, at times, compete in substandard waves and on a schedule that takes athletes to the most far flung locations on earth where consecutive heat losses can quickly erode one’s self confidence.

The Irish-born, Australian surfer and defending Mr Price Pro Ballito Champion knows only too well how testing the WQS can be.

Battling it out on the WQS for a decade, his determination for a spot among the world’s elite proved unwavering until finally in 2012, Hall achieved his goal of qualifying for the prestigious 2013 ASP World Tour.

While most radical rookies make the cut before their 20’s, Hall at age 31, was an unlikely candidate.

momentum just two months later to surface on the podiums highest block, winning the ASP Prime Mr Price Pro Ballito and jumping to World No. 16 on the One World rankings.

“It was the biggest win of my career by far,” Hall said. “I got that second at Trestles and then decided to just focus on the Prime in Africa and didn’t go to JBay. I pretty much put all my eggs in one basket because if I was going to qualify then it was all about the Primes so that was my focus and it paid off.”

Travelling to Durban and Ballito for a number of years but never placing higher than a 25th, Hall’s rise to the top of Africa’s most prestigious surfing event was significant for a number of reasons.

“I love South Africa and I love the waves in Ballito. There’s such a variety in the waves

and we’ve been lucky to have some of the best waves on tour here in the last few years, so it’s a favourite stop for sure and made my win here last year even more special.”

Clinching one of just four spots on the WCT at the end of the year, the Irish national finally joined the elite ranks after a decade of determination.

“I’d been so close to qualifying for a couple of years but just never managed to get it over the line so to finally do it last year was just unbelievable.”

But it wasn’t all plain sailing. With a lack of sponsors and support from the Australian surf industry over the early part of his career, Glen was forced to make a few tactical decisions that would allow him to remain on tour.

‘My Grandfather was Irish so I qualified for heritage and was granted an Irish Passport, from which I made the move to Europe. At that time I was sponsor-less and it was my first year back from injury. I competed under the Irish flag and was proud to be a representative for Irish surfing at a WQS level and I lived in Europe for the majority of that time”.

While relatively common among other sports, an Irish surfer was unique to surfing and Hall was met with an equal share of support and criticism from both fans and the public alike.

“Of course there were some online critics but the support I have had from both the Irish and Aussie surfers has been amazing. It was good to know your friends and fans still support you. The Irish surf community has been so stoked to have someone to follow and I’m honestly enjoying surfing for them and trying to help the young Irish surfers have someone to look up to in competitive surfing.”

One of the few surfers on tour with a family, Hall now joins a larger network of travelling moms and pops on the WCT where his wife and daughter fit in beautifully among his fellow WCT surfers’ wives and children.

After two events this season, it has been a slow start for Hall who has been consistent with two 25th place finishes. With nine events remaining, this experienced competitor is determined to climb the ratings ladder and is eager to surf dream island locations in Fiji and Bali before returning to Ballito to defend his Mr Price Pro Ballito title in July.

i love South Africa

and I love the waves

in Ballito.

“To finally do it at this age and with the calibre of young guns coming through, was strange I suppose. But, in saying that, I feel like I’m surfing my best and enjoying it as much as ever.”

Refining both his technical and mental approach he was able to reap the rewards when he started netting results in early 2012.A surprise invite and an all expenses paid trip to the four star Hainan Island Classic in China in January was the catalyst for a watershed year that would see the Australian born surfer clean up the competition with a first place finish, giving him the confidence boost he needed for yet another year on the WQS.

A few months later Hall made his way into the final of the Lowers Pro in California placing runner up, and continued his

“ The list of international favourites for the ‘Pro’ runs deep and picking a winner from foreign waters could prove more difficult than placing a winning bet at the Durban July! The Mr Price Pro Ballito is only open to the top 90 ranked surfers in the world and here are seven names to keep an eye on…

Julian ‘Jules’ Wilson is the youngest member of a fanatical surfing family from the Sunshine Coast of Australia. A prodigious junior talent, Wilson won national titles in both long and shortboard divisions before diving right into the shortboard scene in his mid teens.

Multiple pro junior titles and the 2006 ISA World Junior Title soon followed. In 2008 he became the youngest ever recipient of the Surfer Poll award for “Best Performance of the Year” for his part in Quiksilver’s Young Guns III. In 2010 Julian released his own signature film titled “Scratching The Surface” and also took out the Sri Lanka Airlines Pro before a strong end-of-season showing in Hawaii that included two finals and the Triple Crown Rookie Of The Year title.

Julian collected enough points to join the 2011 ASP World Tour and his biggest wins to date include the Quiksilver Pro Portugal and the Nike US Open of Surfing.

Age 24hometown Coolum Beach, Australia

Of all the surfers on tour Matt ‘Wilko’ Wilkinson has one of the most laid-back approaches to pro surf contests. This affable goofy footer is a laugh a minute on land but that all changes when he dons a contest jersey and starts nailing radical airs that often give him the edge when things are stacked against him. His two biggest victories to date come in ‘Prime’ events, the 2010 O’Neill Coldwater Classic and the 2012 Quiksilver Saquarema Prime, and with a little more intent there could very well be more victories coming his way.

After four years of competing on the ASP WQS Otton’s 2006 season was heavy with top 10 finishes which launched the progressive goofy-footer onto the ASP World Championship Tour in 2007. Although initially unknown on the international stage, Otton made his presence felt by upsetting top ranked surfers in high profile events and finished inside the Top 15 as a rookie.

That same year Otton ended World Champion Kelly Slater’s hopes for world title No. 9 when he eclipsed him at the Santa Catarina Pro in Brazil and then went on to surf his first ASP World Tour Final with freshly-crowned ASP World Champ Mick Fanning.

His fellow competitors will attest to his beach break dominance yet semifinal showings at Teahupoo and frequent free surfs at hell spots such as North Sydney’s “Deadmans” prove that he is also a threat in heavy water conditions.

Age 33hometown tatha, Australia

At 18 years old natural footer ‘Holy’ Toledo is wasting no time making his mark among the worlds best having only qualified for the elite ASP World Championship Tour this year. Since stepping up to the highest level of pro surfing in 2013 Toledo bagged back to back two quarter-finals in the Rip Curl Pro at Bells Beach and the Billabong Pro Rio and immediately found himself in the top ten on the world rankings.

In the 2011 US Open of Surfing at Huntington Beach, on arguably the largest and most competitive Juniors stage, Filipe claimed victory in a star-studded final that featured superstars John John Florence and Kolohe Andino.

He is the son of a nurturing ex-pro surfer, Ricardo Toledo, that has been there to guide his son’s personal and athletic development, yielding a talented but humble teenager.

Age 18hometown ubatuba, Brazil

Kolohe Andino has unfinished business at Ballito after the American teen sensation posted a perfect ten point tube ride in his very first heat in the Mr Price Pro Ballito in 2011 when giant surf rocked the event to its core. The perfect start didn’t end with a perfect result but the experience proved invaluable for the rising star. Andino, the son of the legendary pro surfer Dino Andino, has been prophesied to become a world champion ever since he started lighting up in contests as a red hot grommet. Although he’s yet to win big on the World Championship Tour the momentum is building for Andino and it’s just a matter of time before the flood gates open for the California kid.

Age 19hometown San Clemente, California

Alejo Muniz is an Argentinian-born Brazilian natural footer who can mix it up in a wide variety of surf conditions. Given that he is a former Vans Triple of Crown of Surfing Rookie of the Year winner and has claimed victories at home in the Hangloose Pro in 2011 and the 2009 Quiksilver Estoril Pro in Portugal gives testament to the fact that he is comfortable whether he’s pulling airs or pulling deep into the barrel.

He was only one of two newcomers to qualify for the elite ASP World Championship Tour in 2011 and looks set to maintain his position among the worlds best due to his sheer strength and versatility as a surfer.

Age 23hometown Santa Catarina, Brazil

With three ‘Prime’ titles already to his name this giant killer Brazilian knows exactly what it takes to win gold on the Prime Tour. Pupo is one of the new generation of Brazilian surf stars who can throw down reverse airs with his eyes closed and he’s just as dangerous whether he’s competing at home or abroad. He proved that his win at the 2011 Nike Lowers Pro was no fluke when he backed it up with another win five months later at the O’Neill Coldwater Classic in Santa Cruz, California and then another victory on home soil at the Hangloose Pro early last year.

After missing the first two ASP World Championship Tour events earlier this year ‘Poo Poo’ is on the comeback trail and will prove a tough match for whoever has to face this red hot goofy footer.

Explosive epitomizes Travis’s surfing. He packs so much power in his turns; it begs belief there’s still a wave left when he’s done surfing. He’s spent eight years on tour, long enough to be considered a veteran and is one of the fiercest competitors you’ll meet. With a reputation for wreaking havoc with World Title campaigns, Travis has risen to the occasion of some of the most critical heats in professional surfing, taking down World Title campaigners when it counts. His gutsy performance in heaving Teahupo’o barrels in 2011 was a highlight of his career where he posted the highest heat score of the quarterfinals, at a blistering 18.07 out of 20 to reach the semis posting his career best result of equal third when he was defeated by Owen Wright. A year later he charged through to the semifinals of the O’Neill Coldwater Classic in Santa Cruiz California, eliminating World rankings leader Joel Parkinson in the semifinals, again wreaking havoc with the World Title race and finishing equal third place.

A runner up at the 2008 Mr Price Pro, Logie has been one of the most consistent finishers at the event but is yet to add the prestigious title to his collection.

the south African contingent has always been a force to be reckoned with at the mr Price Pro, they aren’t merely out to make up the numbers or cause big upsets. they’re out for the gold and the richest prize in south African surfing. ricky Basnett captured the title at durban’s north Beach in 2006 with Jordy smith taking the crown in 2010 amidst soccer world cup hysteria. Here’s a look at our local heroes hoping to keep the title on home soil…

South Africa’s most decorated surfer on the international circuit, Jordy Smith has become a household name in professional surfing. The 2010 ASP World No. 2 is the second South African ever to win the Mr Price Pro (2010) and only South African to capture back to back victories at Billabong Pro Jeffreys Bay (2010 and 2011). Plagued by injury in 2011, Smith has had a few lackluster years on the WCT finishing 7th in 2011 and 12th in 2012. Fresh off an equal 3rd place finish at the Rip Curl Pro Bells Beach not to mention a gold medal win at the X-Games in Brazil, Smith is showing signs of his former self and should he continue in this form, will be a dangerous competitor at the Mr Price Pro Ballito this year.

Boasting a combination of technical brilliance and creative flair that has garnered global respect from both the surfing community and his rivals on the ASP World Championship Tour, Smith’s return to Ballito will be highly anticipated as the 6’2 champ unleashes his exceptional repertoire of progressive aerials and power carves with the hope of recapturing his crown.

Age 25hometown Durban

Probably the most ‘local’ of the South African contingent, living just down the road in Umhlanga, Beyrick De Vries would like nothing more than to prove himself in front a home crowd. Beyrick was awarded a wildcard into the Mr Price Pro in 2012 and posted his career best result finishing equal 17th, giving him enough points to qualify for the Primes and six stars. Beyrick went on to place equal fifth at the five star in the Canary Islands followed by an equal 9th at the six star in Spain in 2012. Finishing equal 9th at the 4 Star Burleigh Breaka in Australia, Beyrick is gaining momentum at international level. With an illustrious Pro Junior career and a clean sweep of every Pro Junior title in SA in 2010, De Vries is out to prove himself on the WQS circuit this season.

With a wild and unpredictable approach to competition, Beyrick should be one of the most feared local surfers to come up against this year. His above the lip surfing gives him a definite edge and his hometown knowledge should see him advance through a few heats with ease.

Son of well known surfboard shaper Des Sawyer, Steven was born and bred on the World Class right hand point break of Supertubes in Jeffreys Bay. Honing his backhand on the world’s most perfect right-hander Steven could not have asked for a better foundation to his professional surfing career. With a perfected style of top to bottom surfing, topped with innovation and flair his performances have seen Steven notch up a number of accolades in his pro junior career including wins in the U16 boys and U14 boys SA Junior Championships. With a rookie season in Hawaii in 2011 as well significant time competing in Australia, Steven is gaining experience towards a solid WQS campaign in the near future.

When it comes to the Mr Price Pro Ballito wildcard deck you don’t get more experienced or more dangerous than nine-times elite ASP World Title Tour qualifier East London’s Greg Emslie. The recently crowned ISA Masters Champion is reputed to be surfing better than ever and will be determined to take out the one event that has always eluded him, the Mr Price Pro Ballito. The stylish natural-footer flew the flag for South Africa on the international stage for a record 14 years (nine on the World Title Tour and five on the Star Tour) retiring from international competition at the end of 2009, setting his sights firmly on the domestic circuit where he has dominated the competition claiming three consecutive National Championship Titles. This bonofide hometown favourite will have the support of the crowd on his side when he takes on the best Ballito has to offer this week.

Few could forget Dale’s perfect 10 barrel ride in 8-10ft Ballito at the inaugural Mr Price Pro Ballito 2009. Arguably one of the most naturally gifted surfers to emerge from the South Africa Pro Junior surfing ranks, Dale exudes exceptional style and barrel riding to boosting and continues to turn heads both locally and internationally. A revered competitor on the international pro junior tour, Staples is starting to prove himself on the international circuit with an equal 9th at the Volcom Pipe Pro in Hawaii in 2012 as well as a 5th place at the Billabong Pro Jeffreys Bay 6 Star and is looking to go from strength to strength on the world stage in 2013. Having recently moved to Westbrook, just 10 minutes from Ballito, Dale is ensuring that he puts in plenty of water-time at Ballito to make sure that he has the best possible preparation for this year’s event.

Born and raised on the raw power and shark infested waters of the Southern Cape, Shaun Joubert now divides his time between South Africa and what he refers to as his second home California. No stranger to risk taking, it’s exactly this attitude that makes him a standout on the professional circuit. Fearless, futuristic and powerful with an affinity for big, hollow waves, Joubert is set to make a name for himself on the international circuit. With a fierce competitive edge Joubert has been hailed the next big name to emerge from Jordy Smith’s shadow. A multiple SA Champion and Billabong Pro Junior Champion, Joubert is slowly making inroads on the international circuit with an equal fifth at the 6 Star in Spain last year and an equal 9th at the Mr Price pro Ballito in 2011. Shaun’s free surfing is where he also excels and his highly acclaimed section in Billabong’s international film, Still Filthy, not to mention numerous magazine cover spreads and video sections have gained him international respect as one of the worlds top up and coming surfers.

Matt Bromley, 21, is a braveheart from the icy waters of Cape Town who travels the world to surf the most intimidating waves on the planet. From Dungeons to Backdoor Pipeline the ‘Bromdog’ can be found launching himself into giant waves no matter what the ocean throws at him. The lanky blonde with model like features is also a giant killer. Both Jordy Smith and Sean Holmes have fallen to the ice-man from Long Beach since he aced both SA surfing heroes in the same heat at the 2010 O’Neill Coldwater Classic. Bromley doesn’t only have a bright future in surfing but also has a bright head on his shoulders. He’s currently pursuing a business degree through UNISA and is a gifted motivational speaker to boot. And it doesn’t stop there. Bromley has a deep passion for South Africa’s youth and often engages with previously disadvantaged kids by playing his part as a socially responsible South African citizen. I think music in itself is healing. It’s an explosive expression of humanity. It’s something we are all touched by. No matter what culture we’re from, everyone loves music

-Billy Joel

“ “unstoppable — and S.A fave — Prime Circle, reminding us why they are known as a major force on the music scene.

Another headliner sure to set hearts racing will be the unbelievable vocals of ISO, a local indie rock group, otherwise known as Isochronous. You can also look forward to Wonderboom, Die Heuwel Fantasies, Shadow Club and aKing.

Saturday night, July 6, sees some of the up-and-coming about-to-be-big names in the music biz, wow the crowds with their leg-twitching, arm-raising beats. With a first-rate line-up like this, it is safe to say it will be one helluva party! Welcoming the fittingly dubbed “electro night” will be the energetic and enthusiastic dance duo that is Pascal and Pearce. Known for their ignitable ability to work a dance floor, they are sure to end off the pro with a bang! “We’re very happy to be back at the Mr Price Pro again this year – last year was our first time performing

there, and we can honestly say it was one of the best gigs of 2012! The crowd were really responsive and everybody had loads of fun. It was really cool to play at such a big event aimed at all ages, a lot of our gigs are 18+, so it’s always nice to perform for the younger fans. We’re really excited to see what it will be like this year, and we will make sure that we bring our A-game, as always!!!” said Pascal & Pearce

And finally, but by no means least, you can expect Gangs of Ballet, Tailor, Lonehill Estate, Crazy White Boy, iScream & The Chocolate Stix and Dino Bravo.

Set on the beach as close to nature as you can get, there is really no beating the atmosphere that envelopes you at a show of this calibre so don’t miss out on this year’s Mr Price Pro free concert! All shows start at 16:30 and roughly end at 22:45.

This year promises not to disappoint, as the concert will see not two, but three extraordinary nights of rocking beneath the stars as some of our country’s biggest and best stars grace the Pro stage at Salt Rock beach. Nineteen class acts will be spread over the three nights, catering for even the most discerning of music lovers — from African to upbeat house and a whole lotta rock, it’s going to be ignitable!

“The free music concerts are a wonderful extension of our ASP Prime World Tour surf event, made possible through the association with the KwaDukuza Municipality, and offering incredible entertainment to all who join us on the beach for a unique outdoor music experience. We welcome South Africa’s top artists, who will deliver an incredible show and, with a third concert added due to the demand, proves that there is an incredible and diverse array of talent in our amazing rainbow nation. We welcome

all to join us, but urge everyone to come early as we are once again expecting large crowds. We will provide a “Drop-off” zone in addition to a “Park and Ride” facility to ease traffic congestion — please make use of these. Remember, though, no drinking and driving!” says Graham Daniel, event organiser for the Mr Price Pro.

Thursday night, July 4, introduces a new African rock addition to the concert calendar and sees Big NUZ, an Afro band from Durban, headlining the show — these guys are badass and are ready to take on Ballito and, as the name implies, do BIG things! Other artists in Thursday’s line-up include Mafikozolo, DJ Milkshake, Awgust Rush, AmaWrongTurn and DJ Tira.

Friday night, July 5, will have some of our legends of rock drumming their way into our hearts and will no doubt have the audience singing their way through the 365 - minute set. Headlining the night will be the

what is your favourite after surf meal? A wrap/burrito with meat/chicken, rice, avo, rocket, all the goodies!

what is your signature dish? First of all, Im not a great chef at all, mainly because my best mate, Ollie Swart, is the best chef I’ve ever met and he likes his space in the kitchen. So if there’s any cooking to be done, he’s the man to do it and he doesn’t let me get involved haha, but my signiture dish for on my travels would be my chicken wrap.

what is your most embarrassing kitchen blunder? When I proudly cooked a roast chicken for the family I was staying at in Hawaii. I left the guts sack in the chicken! Fail!

what do your mates think about your food...really? “Tastes good but presentation sucks… “

what dish would you serve to lure a woman? No doubt a yellowtail that I had speared earlier that day with moms special recipe MADAGASCAR GREEN pepper sauce. Done, women lured..

Apart from the next big set what is cooking going forward? (what’s your next career move) The next big move is a pretty big one! Ollie and myself are filming a surfing and cooking pilot show up the East Coast. He loves surfing and I love food, I’m a professional surfer and he’s a top chef. It’s a working combo.

what is your favorite after surf meal? Probably a chicken burger from a local restaurant in JBay called “Nina’s”.

what is your signature dish? Chicken fillet breasts that I dip in some special marinade which is fairly easy to make and then squeeze some lemon on to keep it tender and juicy, with broccoli and mash potato.

what is your most embarrassing kitchen blunder? My most embarrassing kitchen blunder would be 5 years back when I baked some brownies and they burnt, after I spent 3 hours getting everything perfect, they just came out like black charcoal. I swore to never cook again. But a few days later I was back at it. The next time they were perfect.

what do your mates think about your food...really? “His baking skills are good” (I bake more than I cook)

what dish would you serve to lure a woman? To impress a lady I’d definitely rather take her out somewhere special, I wouldn’t rely on my cooking that much just yet.

Apart from the next big set what is cooking going forward? Training hard and doing as many QS contests as I can get to around the world. I’m super amped. I’m a goofy footer from Jeffreys Bay, I’ve been surfing and competing since I was 9. Surfing has enabled me to do a lot more travelling than most people my age. Apart from representing South Africa in World Champs in New Zealand and Peru, I have also competed in a few World Qualifying Series in Australia and I have surfed huge waves in Hawaii. I love competing.

so You think You can cook Ballito style competitionOne pro, one amateur. Eight teams in an on-stage culinary battle for the ultimate bragging rights and R110 000 worth of Prizes. This pro chef competition will see professional chefs from the North Coast teamed with amateurs, cooking against each other and against the clock in the hope of impressing the Judges.

Chef Jodi-Ann Pearton, Director of South African Chefs Association and Title Judge for Coastal Living Bru is bound to be hard to impress. Chef Jodi has competed and won just about every major chef accolade in and out of South Africa.

Also on the judges panel is local foodie extraordinaire Jacqui Rey. The judges will be looking for some dazzling dishes in the elimination rounds on Tuesday and Wednesday and the heat is bound to be turned up at the finals on Thursday.

Restaurantshow caseHungry…..

Taster Meals from under 40 bucks! Be sure to treat yourself to a tasting tour of Ballito’s finest food culture where there is something for everyone. Dishes vary from prawn rissoles to curries, from sticky ribs to hearty pastas, and let us not forget about good old fashioned fish and chips. For the more refined pallet, sushi and oysters are sure to hit the spot.

Checking in for Friday afternoon or evening will be quick and easy whether you’ve chosen the luxurious and decadent Fairmont Zimbali Resort with sea views and a variety of in house restaurants or the exclusive private game reserve at Rain Farm Game Lodge with rustic rooms that cater for couples or large families, or offer real game experiences in tree top rooms. The ideal start to the weekend is to ‘chill’ on your first night and soak in the North Coast’s relaxed, laid back atmosphere. You can even push a little further north to the small beach town of Zinkwazi and check into the Coral Reef Hotel if you want to get far away from shops, robots and any form of busyness.

It wouldn’t be the perfect weekend getaway without a great dining experience and Ballito and the North Coast serve up a buffet of options. Whether you plan to be out of bed fresh and early to catch the sunrise over the sea or you ease out of bed

and slip into something casual for brunch, there is a place just for you.

The ever popular Zara’s is the buzz in Ballito when it comes to breakfast or lunch and you’ll feel like you’re in the “Melrose Arch” of the sea. For something a little more relaxed Sage Restaurant in Salt Rock is a must and you might find your breakfast slide into a lazy lunch. If you looking for a quick, delicious coffee and Panini on the way to the beach stop in at Salt Café on the beach road and you’re set to go. With so many options your breakfasts and lunches are sorted for both Saturday and Sunday and it’s guaranteed you won’t touch a stove….unless you really want to.

While there is so much to do in and around Ballito like microlighting, going on adventure trails, visiting the Animal Farm, catching a night show at the Pumpkin Theatre or

booking in for a spa treatment it wouldn’t be a relaxing weekend getaway if you didn’t head down to one of the many beaches. Spend some time just relaxing on the beach and getting sand between your toes. Ballito has some of the best beaches with easy access so make sure you get to one….this is our secret when it comes to a relaxing weekend getaway…food, sun, sand and sea!

After a fun filled day the only thing left to worry about is where to eat dinner, remember we said food was part of the recipe to a great weekend away, and there are so many great places to choose from. If you looking for something really different try Al Pescatore down on the beach, this restaurant has been around for 25 years and is a superb experience. Up at Lifestyle Centre you’ll find Himal, Jitesh and their friendly team at the local Primi or you can settle for something a little more intimate and upmarket at the renowned Beira Alta.

Your Sunday should be pretty much the same as your Saturday, keeping it nice and slow and making sure you get the most of your weekend away. Remember there’s no long, tiring drives home if you heading back to Durban so you can stretch your weekend all the way to late Sunday afternoon, maybe even a stop at beach bums for a Jam Jar and if you flying, hopefully you booked the last flight out from KSIA.

With great weather, great beaches and so much to offer with such great value, Ballito and the North Coast make the perfect weekend getaway and we welcome you to visit with open hearts and sunny smiles.

If Durbanite Ryan Janssens hadn’t heeded the call of the ocean in his life, then there’s every chance he could be planting trees instead of planting himself deep in the tube with many of South Africa’s leading surfers between Cape Town and Durban.

Janssens, who was raised in Westville and attended the Weston Agricultural College in KwaZulu-Natal, realised his childhood dreams when he transformed his photography hobby and love for the ocean into a full time career.

After completing high school in 2004 he went from the bush to the beach and couldn’t be any happier.

His love for the ocean, bodyboarding and surfing has taken him from Mozambique to Hawaii and if he could spend the rest of his life shooting waves and surfers around the world, that would be the ultimate career path for the 26 year old whose big breakthrough came at the Mr Price Pro Ballito last year.

“I learnt more as a photographer last year at the Mr Price Pro in one week than I did in all my years at college studying photography,” said Janssens who graduated

with distinctions from the Durban Institute of Technology in 2012 and is now a key member of the Mr Price Pro Ballito media team.

Covering an international surfing and lifestyle event is no easy feat when one can work up to 18 hours a day shooting, editing and doing web integration all the while trying to capture magic moments that will be digitized forever.

But with an abundance of adrenalin from the fountain of youth, Janssens is always up to the task, day or night, and he hardly misses a beat at South Africa’s biggest beach and lifestyle event.

With his formal photographic training now behind him, Janssens is still honing his own unique style drawing much inspiration from master water photographers such as South

Africans Allan Van Gysen and Sacha Specker and Hawaiian Zak Noyle.

“My creativity comes from the photographers I look up to, by taking something from each one and then adding my own personal touch,” explained Janssens.

“One of my favourite lenses is a fish-eye wide angle lens as I like to be up close to my subjects and interact with them to bring out the cool moments that I’m looking for in my photos.”

with the mr Price Pro touching down in Ballito in 2009 there have been new waves of change breaking the cycle of poverty and improving the lives of thousands of children in Kwadukuza thanks to the redcap Foundation which carries out the corporate social investment initiatives for the mr Price Group.

Keeping in line with the foundation’s mission to inspire tomorrow’s heroes and tackling national challenges in education, health and unemployment the RedCap Foundation has partnered with the KwaDukuza Municipality to make a positive difference in the lives of young South Africans in the KwaDukuza region.

“the mr Price Pro Ballito couldn’t be a better place to share the redcap Foundation’s commitment to the people of Kwadukuza,” said Natasja Ambrosio, Director of RedCap Foundation, who heads

up the RedCap Foundation. “We have a dream to educate and empower our future generation to be inspired, healthy, engaged and responsible citizens, capable of bringing about much needed social change and building a positive society.”

In KwaDukuza, this vision is fast becoming a reality courtesy of the RedCap Schools Project which was launched in 2010 at five KwaDukuza schools - Aldinville Primary, Zilungisele Primary, St Christopher Primary, Kearsney Primary and Nyakana Combined Primary school.

“Education is a key focus of the Foundation. Our objective is to inspire a different way of thinking and implementation in schools. The Foundation identifies gap areas where it can innovate and show different ways of addressing challenges such as a lack of resources and the need for ongoing teacher training and managerial skills. The RedCap

REDCAP FOUNDATIONInspiring tomorrow’s heroes...

Schools Project aims to transform these five primary schools by building a culture of excellence with the goal of improving the performance of learners,” she explained.

Ongoing projects – implemented with the support of the KwaDukuza municipality and in partnership with the Department of Education – include the YoungHeroes programme which aims to assist teachers in their implementation of physical education and inculcating a love of sport into these schools. The Iciko (meaning talent) project ensures that art, drama and dance are no longer the preserve of wealthier schools. To help improve the quality of life for youngsters growing up in this area, the RedCap Foundation also set up and supports the Mr Price KwaDukuza High Schools Soccer League which sees 17 schools benefitting from their participation in an eight month league where learners learn the benefits of teamwork, discipline, dedication,

perseverance and many other life skills learnt through participation in sport.

RedCap and KwaDukuza have also implemented Jumpstart, a programme which sets out to address the lack of experiential training and skills needed in business, that affect’s young people’s chances of accessing employment.

At this year’s Mr Price Pro Ballito the RedCap Foundation will be increasing it’s visibility at the event with numerous activations creating further awareness for the Foundation’s initiatives. Apart from the from the Foundations’ display cabin in the retail and entertainment area there will be beach soccer tournaments, a golf tournament, Iciko art and dance displays and even top SA surfer Steven Sawyer surfing as an ambassador for the Foundation in South Africa’s only international surfing event. This isn't the first time this headline's been used. Surfing and Coffee in South Africa go hand in hand. Surfer, Iain Evans, former publisher of theBOMBsurf Magazine says "We chased waves around the coastline a lot making theBOMBsurf and we discovered so many amazing coffee shops. We were naturally exposed to the best coffee in the country. Publishing a coffee magazine was a natural next step "

Dark figures, silhouetted against the rising sun, steaming cup of coffee in hand is a sight synonymous with dawn patrol at the wealth of surf spots dotted along South Africa's vast coastline. And the post surf coffee, over which tales of tubes and epic rides are shared over the aroma of amazing coffee and great post-surf munchies. Local surf star Matt Bromley enthuses " Coffee fits into my lifestyle in so many ways. I drink it before heats, I drink it when I'm feeling surfed out and probably most importantly, I have to have good coffee when I'm studying my business notes. When I'm sitting in

Indo, been surfing for 4 hours and I need to crack the books for a few hours. "

In the KwaDukuza area, catch some of the most loved cafe's like Yellow Cafe at the Litchi Orchard, Milk Cafe near Salmon Bay or Salt in the Shaka's Rock main road. All are guaranteed to satisfy your java fix, with quality baristas and the best artsan coffees from local roasters. In fact there's even an app to help you find them. Download this app to your iphone for more great spots - The Discover Great Coffee App in iTunes: https://itunes.apple.com/WebObjects/MZStore.woa/wa/viewSoftware?id=627884571&mt=8

If you're an aspiring home-barista join TheCoffeeMag at the unique "Coffee Experience" at the Coastal Living Bru Food and Winer Lifestyle Festival at the La Montange Hotel. You'll be able to learn about coffee appreciation, different coffee beans, espresso extraction and latte art with TheCoffeeMag, De Longhi, Illovo and Clover.
