Front-page congratulations go to Lydia and Seb who hurdled and high jumped their way earlier in the week to IAPS Regional gold medals in the Junior Athletics Finals. The whole junior team performed brilliantly, securing a haul of silver and bronze medals (see Mr Reay’s report and pictures later in the Nutshell). The team’s performance is further evidence on just how far the school’s sporting prowess has come on over recent years and how deep the talent now is. There was plenty of promise on show, with focus and determination to match blossoming ability. We are hoping that there will be further good news on Friday as the Seniors do battle to retain some, and claim other, regional crowns. Mr Fagg deserves a crown of some sort for his engagement in and involvement with the Golden Boot Challenge. He delivered against his somewhat reckless promise, made in front of his class, to walk in once during the week. Considering Mr Fagg lives in Tonbridge, a trek of some 21.3 miles, this was quite a statement to both make and to uphold. Mr Fagg set off this morning at 3.45am, making the most of the summer solstice light, and arrived at school some 5 hours later. Luckily for him, he left his car at school on Thursday so he has been spared the long, lonely walk home. Elsewhere there were plenty of others who took to bikes to cycle in or who walked, ran and jogged their way to school. I am sure that the environment enjoyed the rest from quite so much exhaust pollution and that all those who rose to the challenge feel fitter and healthier because of their endeavours. Special mention should go to Harry D who showed command of his bike’s braking system in the car park on Thursday morning, to Mrs Tulett and Ariella

who ran and cycled in every day, to George and Alex W who ran alongside their dad and dog all the way (uphill) from Westerham and to Emilia, Grace and Jessica who kept Mrs Lowe company on their picturesque cycle across the Chart. The Golden Boot is all about team effort so we eagerly await news of which class’ combined efforts has clinched them this year’s trophy. If the glorious weather persists, I hope that as many of you as possible will continue to enjoy a fresher air journey to school. We have been treated to some absolutely wonderful and mesmerising musical performances this week. Ranging from the Oak Music Concert on Thursday to Friday’s Year 1 and 2 Recital and Skylarks Concert to the Year 5 auditions for the Chapel Choir I have been bowled over by the confidence and poise of our youngest performers. It takes some guts to stand up in front of a proper audience to play an instrument. Nerves can get the better of even the most well practised and professional performer. Yet our pupils hid all signs of being nervous to entertain and impress in bucket loads. As with the school’s sporting talent, the musical future of Hazelwood is looking incredibly bright. Our older pupils too did incredibly well in their Trinity Board exams with no score being less than a healthy merit. Congratulations go to all this week’s ensemble and solo performers. And final congratulations go to the 57 pupils who took their LAMDA exams a few weeks ago. Having had a string of fabulous results in the past, there was a lot of expectation resting on these pairs of young shoulders. In true acting style however, they all threw their shoulders back, faced the examiner in the eye and delivered their pieces with clarity and creativity. So much so that the external assessor had no choice but to award 35 distinctions and 22 merits. The reputation of Hazelwood LAMDA is upheld. A big theatrical BRAVO! to the children and to Miss Bovingdon for bringing out the best in each and every one. News from The Nursery & Early Years

The children have shone as brightly as the sun this week. Both Oak and Robins have taken to the stage to perform their annual Summer concerts. They performed with confidence and enjoyed the experience of performing in front of their families. A huge thank you to the Reception team, room staff and Mrs Young for their hard work in preparing the children for these memorable performances. The concerts can be viewed on Halo. I look forward to seeing many of you at the Summer Fair tomorrow, I will be in the stocks from 12.00 until 12.20!! Aside from performing to large audiences, the children of HNEY have also been busy in their rooms and outside spaces. This week we have been running races in the field and have been singing rhymes in the wigloo - ‘Bubble Pop’ is a firm favourite! Fledglings 1 have really been enjoying outings around the nursery, including trips to the library and to see Peanut. We have also been collaging and painting different food pictures from ‘The Hungry Caterpillar’ story.

In Fledglings 2 we have been exploring the beach this week.

Lots of sand exploration such as making and measuring footprints and building sand castles. We have practised our cutting skills to make Boats and sorted and counted shells.

It has been a very busy week in Lower Robins. We have been discussing People Who Help Us, painting different professionals at the easel, improving our pencil control with focused activity sheets and been performing operations and care for lots of patients in the role play area! Added to this, we have practised for Sports day and our Summer concert and kept an eye on our growing tadpoles and frogs!

This week in Top Robins we have been very busy being super heroes. The children have made super hero masks and capes as well as colouring in super hero pictures. We have also been looking at the book ‘Supertato‘. The children have enjoyed looking at different fresh fruit and vegetables, sorting them by their different properties. We have been practicing for our concert next week and for sports day.

The children have grasped the concept and enjoyed making ‘sensible guesses’. It was lovely to see some of the children playing "duck, duck, goose", they were able to take turns beautifully! Collaboration was key when a group of children worked harmoniously to construct a house out of the giant polydron.

We hope you enjoyed the summer concert performance as much as the children enjoyed performing.

Skylarks have been watching the progress of our potato plants, watering them regularly and these are flourishing with flowers beginning to appear. The weather has allowed us to take our learning outside and Mr Garlick has been teaching the children to estimate different quantities of compare bears.

Oak have continued working on their story writing this week. The children also watched the growth of their runner bean seeds with interest, recording their observations in a diary. To help them develop an understanding of time they have made clocks and explored telling the time.

What’s on next week? Monday 25th June- Skylarks to Oak transition Teddy Bears picnic 10.30-12.30 Tuesday 26th June- Robins (9.30-10.30) and Skylarks (11.00-11.30) sports morning Wednesday 27th June- Skylarks to Oak transition evening 19.00 Thursday 28th June- Robins summer concert 9.15

News from Hazelwood

Junior IAPS Success Once again, Hazelwood took an eager and excited group of years 4 and 5 children to Hurstpierpoint College for the Junior IAPS Athletics event. This is a great introduction to competitive racing ahead of the National competition in years 6 – 8. Our pupils were competing with 26 other Prep schools from the South East with the aim of being crowned regional champion. In recent years one of our major areas of focus has been the hurdles event. Both Daniel A and Lydia O demonstrated the improvements we have made in this area. Both competitors made it through their heats and into the afternoon finals. Daniel ran a superb race to finish an excellent 3rd and take the bronze whilst Lydia, after a slow start, used her power to drive through the field and take the victory and gold. Elsewhere on the track, Daniel A was competing once more. This time in the 1500m. Despite a measured performance, he was unable to take the gold, having to settle for a very well deserved Silver to add to his earlier bronze. Harry E was also impressing in the distance races with another hard fought run earning him a silver. Not to be outdone, our field athletes were also impressing with their performances. In the high jump Lydia almost took to the podium for a 2nd time, ultimately finishing 4th having jumped the same height as 3rd only to lose out in countback. Leo B secured a well-deserved Bronze and Seb T-S put in a masterful performance to pick up Hazelwood’s 2nd gold of the meeting. Alex B was unlucky not to make the podium, missing out by just 1cm in the long jump. Back on the track our U11 girls and U10 boys both finished with bronze in the relay events. Poppy J finished 4th in the 100m sprint. Alex N, Seb T-S and Annabelle N all fought hard to make the finals of the 200m. In total Hazelwood walked away with 2 golds, 1 silver and 4 bronze. A fantastic day all round and the boys and girls can all be extremely proud of their efforts and behaviour throughout the day. Mr Reay

Congratulations to Daniel A, Alex P, Adam R & Oliver H who were part of the winning team in the annual Paddock Wood Football Festival held at the weekend. Against 18 teams, the boys played eight matches, scored 23 goals and only conceded two. Daniel Asli won the Golden Boot with eight goals. Alex and Adam both scored in the Penalty Shootout after the Final finished tied. Oliver H saving one of the oppositions spot kicks. Well done boys.

Parent Notice: Would parents please note that the Pavilion will strictly out of bounds on Sports Day. This is to ensure that nobody impedes the afternoon’s sporting proceedings thereby putting themselves or the competing children in danger. The Theatre toilets, a short walk up the hill, will be open for everyone’s convenience.

Community Fund Thanks On behalf of the Hurst Green and Holland Children’s Centre, thank you so much for the community award we received from you last term. We used it to offer Sing and Sign to local parents with their babies. It has been wonderfully successful. The above picture shows Fiona (the leader in the blue t-shirt) showing Jess the cat to a group of the parents. Many of the babies were signing within a few sessions.

These four fabulous works of art capture the spirit of the Circus and will be on display as part of the end of year Exhibition. Eat your heart R.A. these children are so talented. Well done to Lila, Alice, Felicity and Isaac. Superb works in progress!

In Partnership with Moorfield Eye Hospital The school is very proud to be working with the pioneering staff from Moorfield Eye Hospital to create a 3D visual inspiration piece in celebration of the 70th Anniversary of the NHS. Representing ground-breaking regeneration surgery, which can restore or slow down the loss of sight, the piece will ultimately be on display in London’s National Science Museum. Mrs Tulett, Mrs Bilbrough and Mrs Starr have been grateful for the skilled assistance of Max, Edward, Michelle, Oliver, Jonathan, Lila and of course Mrs Louw in its creation!

The latest themed creative execution in the A to Z of Hazelwood went to press last week in time for the start of the World Cup. Thank you to those who noticed, and commented, on the execution. It’s good to know that we’re on the same side. Come on England!

The now traditional fancy dress tennis

showdown happened this week as part of

the Year 8 Leavers’ Programme. Donald

Trump made a return visit to the school

to take on Barney the dinosaur’s green

cousin and an assortment of flippered

and fanciful fairies. The Nutshell is not

sure that the fashion sense of the Year 8

pupils will be all the rage at Wimbledon

this year!

5C are Eco Champions! A huge congratulations to 5C who clinched the first ever Hazelwood Eco Cup. I was so thrilled with the presentation of the work, the quality and the teamwork which went into it. The class tackled the topic of Biodiversity and the effects of intensive fish farming in an informed and detailed manner and their lovely display was engaging and eye catching.

The competition was extremely close due to the extremely high standard of work produced from Year 1 all the way up to Year 8. I would like to congratulate all the classes and thank the children and their teachers for their hard work in raising awareness for such an important cause. Which class will win it next?

Caught on camera! Oliver M from 4M ventured North with his mum and sister over the weekend in search of Puffins and various birds native to the Farne Islands. Whilst there he took some photos which could easily be seen with The National Geographic. He then presented to his class with great enthusiasm and knowledge. 4M learned a lot. Well done Oliver!

Year 8 Residential Week – Corfe Castle, Dorset. Arriving back last Friday night to their Common Entrance and Alternative Assessment results, Year 8 looked somewhat weary after a hectic 5 days of action packed and adrenalin-fueled activities. They climbed the cliff face of the Jurassic Coast rock, learning to trust their peers to take their body as they abseiled down. Doubles, and in some instances, triples kayaking took place on a lake; with some kayakers suffering a loss of balance leading to capsizes and many soakings. It is even possible that some tumbles into the lake, including that of Mr Hayes and Mr Lloyd were orchestrated by the ramming action of others. With kayaks pulled out the water, we all set off directly to Swanage for an afternoon of sea fishing for mackerel. Early morning storms we were informed, had broken up the shoals so much of the time was spent tending our rods and line with hope, rather than hauling in a bountiful catch. From 36 rods, each with 5 or 6 hooks, the results for a full afternoon of fishing were as follows: Mr Hayes: 3 mackerel, Richard: 2 mackerel, Jaden: 1 mackerel and Rest of us: 0.

Richard brought the catch home with him in his luggage the following day; we do hope they remained well wrapped and odour free until Mrs Cole perhaps finished the gutting and threw them on the barbie. When not out at sea, Year 9 were able to tour the RNLI lifeboat station, and even try on the hugely expensive kit.

You may also see Year 8 sporting woven wristbands; you would be forgiven for thinking that these are just some kind of friendship bracelet. As part of bushcraft skills, we discovered the reality is far more useful, as they are in fact survival bracelets. This a small pull, a length of unbreakable cord is revealed that could be used to cut, bind pull or for many other emergency purposes. Perhaps the most exhausting and exhilarating activity was coasteering. A full day, clad in wetsuits, buoyancy jackets, helmets and a pair of trainers, where we were guided along the rocky coast, running and jumping from the ledges, and climbing cliffs to access the next daredevil drop. Our week ended with a hike across the beautiful Dorset countryside to Knoll Beach for a barbeque, before setting off back to Hazelwood. Later reports suggest that Year 8 followed their week away with a quiet weekend and a lot more sleep than usual. Timely Reminder If parents need to park and block the staff cars parked along the hedgerow for more than just a few minutes while they drop off or pick up, can they please ensure that their mobile number and location is clearly displayed so that they may be contacted if needed to move. Thank you

Rounders Round-up: Let’s hear it for the girls!

The U11C played their final match of Year 6 this week . Even if we do say so ourselves, we have made incredible progress this year. If you’d seen us in our first couple of matches, we were wobbly flustered and kept making the same mistakes. Fast forward a few weeks and we were transformed into a great rounders team! (This may have had something to do with Mrs Clark’s excellent teaching - and the fudge she promised if we hit the ball!) For two matches, our skills were top notch and we won with glorious results. Exceptional bowling from Lily; great backstopping from Ariella; fearless fielding from Beatrice, Amelie, Jaslyn and myself; great decision making from Claudia, Mia, Charlotte, Eve and Darcy. The greatest improvement was in our hitting: everyone made contact with the ball, with special mentions to Ariella and Charlotte, scoring 4 rounders and more per match. It really shows that teamwork and determination make all the difference. Our final match this week was very emotional as some of us, including myself, are moving on to senior schools soon. Wonderful memories of a summer of sport at Hazelwood. Alice P

In anticipation of England’s first match of Russia 2018, the Catering Team had strung bunting across the dining room featuring the flags of all the countries competing. Huge respect to Reuben of Year 2 who, without hesitation and prompting, was able to recognize and name all 32 of them. Some less well known ones were pointed out. A real education and a hugely impressive feat. Well done Reuben!

Girls U10B Rounders Another superb match at St Michael's School in Otford. It has been a pleasure watching the girls get better and better every match. This was a very close game and Hazelwood were just pipped at the post by half a rounder. However, they can keep their heads held high after a wonderful display all round with some excellent fielding and great outs. The whole team were given 'Girl of the Match', which was the perfect call. Great effort by both Hazelwood teachers to drive the girls to improve and take the competition of the match seriously and with grace. Great competitive and team spirit.

The U11A team travelled to Holmewood House on Wednesday 20th June for the annual IAPS rounders competition.

The team started out fantastically, winning their first two matches convincingly and drawing their third match. It was a nail biting time waiting to find out if the team had made it to the cup or the plate competition. Their strong start meant we went through to the cup competition, the team scored 8.5 more rounders than the team they had drawn their last match against!

The team continued to play some amazing rounders, but a few slip ups and early outs of some of our strong batters meant the team finished a very respectable 4th out of 16 schools in total.

All the girls should be very proud of their achievements, it was an amazing day which saw some unbelievable hits and some hand smacking catches!!

U9B rounders team undefeated all term! One match to go let’s hope they keep up the winning streak. Amazing game today against Granville. Eve C scoring 4 rounders in the first innings. Excellent bowling from Isla H, Florrie B and Holly H. The girls all switched fielding positions in the second innings, proving they are a very versatile team. Well done girls

Year 4 have an action-packed few days Last Wednesday Year 4 departed on their annual trip to Hindleap Warren. We were warmly greeted by the fantastic staff and before we knew it we were straight in to our first activities. The children had an amazing time floating around the reservoir in canoes and enjoyed the splashing activities. After paddling for a while we were all allowed to run and jump off the jetty for a nice refreshing swim. Visiting Hindleap Warren is certainly not a trip for those who do not like mud! The children had an amazing adventure through the forest, keeping a careful eye out for the illusive Drop Bears and splashing through welly filling mud puddles. They returned to their dorms, wet, squelchy and muddy but excited and proud that they had tried something new. The climbing wall was a huge success and a great challenge for the children, they learnt how to climb as well as developing their collaborative skills. Their teamwork skills were also tested during the team building exercises, where the children had to complete challenges using their listening and communication skills. I was very proud of the Year 4 children, they approached every challenge with enthusiasm and, at times, courage. I would also like to thank the fantastic Year 4 team who accompanied the children and showed great camaraderie and energy. Mr MacDougall

Gold Award congratulations to Sierk E, Ollie N and Amélie H. For Mrs Louw, through her excitement and her delight for the children, is another pizza fiorentina! Delicious!!

In next week’s Nutshell will be news from the Senior IAPS Athletics, a report from when Harry met Philip Pullman at Sevenoaks Bookshop and news from Year 5’s Evacuation Day. And of course there will be all the thrills and spills from the HPA Summer Fair!

The sun came out for the traditional Teddy Bears Picnic at which transferring Oak children come up to spend a morning and lunchtime in and around the Chestnut Building. As well as a picnic lunch, there were games and challenges which were best solved by working together, or in Neave’s case, by sharing ideas with her brother who is joining Year 1 in September. A wonderful occasion and a fundamental part of the transition and settling in process.

If you go down to the woods today…..

The children of Oak proudly show off their clocks. Making a spectacular Time Machine is the first, and all-important step in being able to tell the time. They will never be late to rise or to help with the washing up ever again. The children also created story maps which tell the tale of The Smartest Giant in Town. Judging from the intricacies of the images, the Giant is not the only bright spark in town! A great week in Oak Reception. Well done everyone!

News from the Kitchen

Please don’t forget that the new menus for both Hazelwood School and the Nursery & Early Years are now on their respective websites under The Parents’ Sections.

Music Timetable

The weekly music timetable can be viewed on the Music Notice Board outside the Dining room in the courtyard. I will endeavour to have the coming week’s music timetable on the notice board by the end of the school day each Friday. Please ensure that your child brings their instrument and music in on the relevant day. It is also important for them to take these books and instruments home when they do not need them in school.

Sports Department

Match Reports should be taken to Mrs Greenwood or emailed to her on [email protected] by Friday afternoon ahead of assembly on Monday morning. If your child is nominated as captain, please encourage them to write the report in time for the assembly. The children do like to share their successes with the rest of the school. Thank you.
