A Message from Principal Hitchman…

Dear Belmont Ridge Families,

As we move into the fourth and final marking period of the 2014-2015 school year,

Belmont Ridge continues to innovate and provide opportunities for our students to be

successful 21st Century learners. Beginning in April, students will be allowed to bring their

own technology devices with them for instructional use in the classroom. Teachers at

Belmont Ridge have already embedded technology into their lessons whether it is through

the use of laptops, scientific calculators, promethean boards, or Vision. Many other school

divisions across the country allow students to bring their own devices to school for

instructional purposes. While the use of such devices for instructional purposes will remain

at teacher discretion, we are aware students will need to interact with technology to be

successful in high school, college, and beyond.

In order to prepare our students, teachers, and parents for Bring Your Own

Technology (BYOT) implementation, Belmont Ridge has provided opportunities for

information gathering. Students have completed Digital Citizenship curriculum which

focused on using technology for instructional purposes in a safe and secure manner. LCPS

updated the Acceptable Use Policy (AUP) and the new AUP is available for viewing on the

Belmont Ridge website. We would like to thank those parents who attended the BYOT

Information Night in March. I would also like to thank the Belmont Ridge PTO for their

continued support of providing technology devices and resources for our students. Staff

members at Belmont Ridge have been provided the opportunity to participate in BYOT

professional development workshops and many teachers have refined their lessons to

incorporate opportunities for students to be actively engaged through the use of technology.

Belmont Ridge is excited and thankful for the opportunity to be a Phase One school

for BYOT implementation. While we do not know what jobs will be available to students

when they graduate from LCPS, we do know our graduates will need to be proficient with

their use of technology. We encourage you to ask questions regarding BYOT

implementation and thank you for your support as we prepare our graduates to be successful

in the 21st Century.

While Belmont Ridge has been re-designated as a National Schools to Watch, our

goal is to build upon our excellence and accomplishments. One avenue for continuous

improvement is providing parents the opportunity to share their thoughts, feelings,

commendations, and recommendations. I encourage you to complete the parent survey

located on the Belmont Ridge website or at https://www.research.net/s/6K969LK to let us

know how we are meeting the needs of students and parents. The parent survey should take

no more than five (5) minutes to complete and is anonymous. We appreciate your feedback

as we strive to provide the best educational opportunities for our students in a safe and

supportive learning environment. Thank you for taking the time to read our newsletter and

have a great day.

8th Grade Science SOL Review Sessions!!! Tuesday & Thursday mornings, 7:45-8:20am, in the Library

All 8th graders are invited to attend the Science SOL Review Sessions for this year’s Science SOL

Test. The Science SOL assessment is based on all the middle school Science Standards and has

questions from 6th, 7th, and 8th grade science Standards Of Learning’s. The science teachers at

Belmont Ridge offer Science Review Sessions before school on Tuesdays and Thursday morning to

help students refresh their minds from years gone by! The purpose of these review sessions is to

provide an overall review of the SOL reporting categories. We understand that Tuesday and

Thursday morning sessions are not convenient for all students. Therefore, students will be given

the opportunity to pick up the information that was passed out at the review. There are multiple

websites available for review practices as well. Please find these on the Science Department page

of the Belmont Ridge website. Please contact your science teacher with any questions.

BRING YOUR OWN TECHNOLOGY

Belmont Ridge Middle School recognizes that technology impacts our everyday lives. BEMS is also aware that technology can be a very powerful and beneficial tool for student learning. We are happy to announce our involvement in the LCPS pilot for implementing BYOT, Bring Your Own Technology. Beginning April 7, your child will have an opportunity to bring his/her own technology device to school to foster collaboration, communication, critical thinking, and creativity. Our staff will receive ongoing training and professional development prior to and throughout our implementation. Our students have or will be participating in Common Sense Digital Citizenship training, which assists them in navigating responsibly and safely through the digital world. Students will also receive information on the guidelines and expectations of BYOT use in school. Please read, sign, and return the Acceptable Use Policy. Once this is done, your child will receive a green label, indicting they have permission to access the wireless network at school. Please check out the BEM website for more information.

LIBRARY PAGES

Thank you for visiting the Scholastic Book Fair! Students had the opportunity to select and

purchase their next great books to read. A special thank you to parents who generously volunteered their time, and to Ms. Amos, the P.T.O. Volunteer Coordinator. Thank you staff, administration, students, parents, and our student library volunteers for helping to make the Scholastic Book Fair a success!

Our Battle of the Books Book Club is on a roll! We are meeting after school in the library every

Wednesday in April. To our “Fabulous 14,” keep up the great work with preparing for the battle on April 23! Team Belmont Ridge Middle School will compete against both Riverside Middle School and Trailside Middle School on April 23 at 4:30 P.M. This event will be held in the auditorium at Trailside Middle School, and family and friends are invited to be part of the audience. Bus transportation will be provided for the team members only, which will be one way to Trailside. “Go, Team Belmont Ridge!” Our last club meeting will be Wednesday, April 29th.

The seventh grade has just completed lessons and participation in Digital Citizenship, sponsored by

Common Sense Media. These lessons educate students about the importance of using technology and social media with responsibility and respect, while recognizing the growing sphere of technology in our lives. The eighth grade will be learning about Digital Citizenship in the upcoming weeks. Please visit commonsensemedia.org for more information.

“Get Out the Vote!” Cast your ballot to vote on April 9th! It’s time to vote for your favorite Virginia Readers’ Choice book! If you have read any four of the following titles, tell the library staff before April 8th! We will provide you with a special pass to go to the library to vote during lunch on April 9th. Endangered by Eliot Schrefer; One for the Murphys by Lynda Mullaly Hunt; Drama by Raina Telgemeier; On the Day I Died by Candace Fleming; Ungifted by Gordon Korman; Spy School by Stuart Gibbs; Inside Out and Back Again by Thanha Lai; How They Croaked by Georgia Bragg; Cinder by Marissa Mayer; and Bomb-The Race to Build and Steal the World’s Most Dangerous Weapon by Steve Sheinkin.

Look for a new Library Mystery during the month of April!

Counselor’s Corner… Important information for Students and Parents: Parents will receive a list of student 2015 – 2016 course selections along with the quarter 3 report card.

This list will detail the courses that your child has been recommended for, as well as those elective

courses that your child has chosen for the upcoming school year. Please review this list carefully with

your child. If you’d like to make a change to any of these courses, please contact your child’s current

grade level counselor via email before June 16, 2015.

The counselors will “move up” with the grade to which they are currently assigned, so your child will

continue with the same school counselor next year. As a team, we really appreciate getting to know our

students and our families, and enjoy working with the same group of students throughout their three year

middle school experience. Please reach out to your child’s counselor if you have any questions or

concerns regarding your child’s transition to the next grade level.

How can routines and practice assist with standardized tests?

On standardized tests, mental computation, estimation, or a nonstandard approach is often twice as fast as

memorized algorithms, especially when the format is multiple-choice

Distractor choices on standardized tests are designed to match the typical errors that students make in

mindless application of the algorithms

Students who have practiced in a familiar and comfortable environment are much less likely to make these

errors and can complete tests more quickly and with greater accuracy.

Boot Camp will focus on core skills and problem-solving strategies that are required of students to be

successful problem solvers on the PSAT or any other standardized test.

Strengthen foundational skills

Maximize time with strategies

Ample practice and reflection

FRONT OFFICE INFORMATION

*** Please have your student check out the Lost and Found area in each House for

missing hoodies, jackets, coats and lunchboxes. Please label the inside of any

item you send to school so that we may return lost items back to your student. **

Visitor, Volunteer, and Late Student Sign-In Procedure All visitors must show identification and report to the main office to sign in and receive a

Visitor’s Pass to wear. All persons except registered and enrolled students and employees of

Belmont Ridge Middle School are classified as visitors. A student who arrives at school after

the official start of the day, 8:40 a.m., must report to the Main Office through the front

door of the building. After leaving the Main Office, students are required to sign in at their

House Office.

Attendance Belmont Ridge Middle School parents, we need your help! When your child is absent, please call

the attendance line at (571)252-2222 to notify the school. For your convenience, this is a 24-hour

answering machine. An absence will be unexcused if the school does not receive a note or a

phone message from the parent or guardian.

Early Dismissals Students may be officially released to their parents or emergency contacts during the school day.

Early dismissals will be excused in the event that a student must leave school to go to a verified

doctor/dental or other medical, funeral, counseling or court appointments. A parental note is

required stating why the student must leave school, what time the student needs to leave,

and the parent’s telephone number to call. The student’s name, grade level and date should

also be clearly stated on the note. The note should be taken to house secretary’s office before

8:40am.

** Please help your child to remember to ask their doctor, dentist, and orthodontist for notes to turn in to

the attendance secretary upon their return to school. This confirmation should be given to the front office

attendance secretary. This is great practice for high school, where this is a requirement. **

Homework Collection 1. Go to the school website: www.lcps.org/bmrms

2. Click on "Staff" at the top of the page.

3. Find the teacher's name and click on the name.

4. Click the calendar link, or homework link, to find out what has been assigned in your child’s

absence. Students must be absent for 3 consecutive days before work can be collected from

teachers for pick-up.

Address and Phone Changes Moving? New phone number? We need your address and telephone updates. If you are moving

and your child will be attending another school for 2014-2015, please notify your child’s

counselor as soon as possible. If you have moved and are still within our attendance zone, please

remember to stop by the school to fill out a change of address form. At that time, we will need to

see proof of your new residence. This proof can be a lease, deed, settlement papers, or a

mortgage statement. To change a work or home telephone number, parents/guardians need to

contact the attendance secretary at (571)252-2220 or access the PIMS link online at

www.lcps.org.

SCHEDULED SCHOOL MEETINGS

When school is closed, parent meetings (parent conferences, IEP meetings, Child Study meetings,

etc.) scheduled at Belmont Ridge MS on that day are also canceled and will be rescheduled. This

includes meetings that are scheduled during times that schools are closed for a delay or early dismissal

(ex: 9:00am meeting during a two-hour delay). We understand the inconvenience this may cause. We

will work with you to promptly reschedule the meeting.

UPDATED BUS INFORMATION

BUS PASSES

Bus Passes may NOT be written for Bus #208 and Bus #736 at this time! LCPS Transportation Department has asked that only 6 bus passes be issued per bus. This means that

each grade level secretary can only issue 2 bus passes per bus. They are issued on a first come, first serve

basis. Students must bring their signed note from their parent to the house secretary first thing in the

morning. Please include the following information:

date, your child’s name, their friend’s name, their friend’s bus number, and your signature and phone.

Every effort will be made between the house secretaries to issue bus passes to students who bring in a note;

however, it may not be possible to accommodate everyone. If a pass is unable to be issued to a student, they

will ride their regular bus home or be able to call home to make other arrangements.

ACTIVITY BUS SCHEDULE Mondays and Wednesdays

Dismissal: 4:30 PM Activity level bus service is a regional service only and is not intended to be the equivalent of regular

school to home service. It is the responsibility of the parents/guardians to familiarize themselves with

their child's activity bus stop location.
