AP WORLD HISTORYCurriculum –
Designed as a survey course by the College Board, a not-for-profit educational company.
Based around 5 historical themes and 6 chronological eras
European history accounts for only 20% of the curriculum
Covers period from around 8000BCE to the present day (10,000 years covered in 8 months)
AP World HistoryAP Testing
Students take an AP Exam on Thursday May 14th
Potential to earn up to 6 college credits from one AP course
College Credit The scores that are required to earn
college credit vary per college/university• UVA = score of 5 to get 3 credits• James Madison = score of 5 to get 6 credits• George Mason = score of 4 to get 3 credits,
5 to get 6 credits• Mary Washington = score of 3 to get 3
credits
WORK LOADAP World History requires:
1. Reading almost every night from a college level textbook
• Approximately 1 hour a night• Approximately 2-3 hours per chapter
2. Reading comprehension assessment 3. Taking unit exams consisting of multiple
choice questions and at least 1 essay4. At least 1 major project per quarter and
several minor ones
ASSESSMENTUnit tests (45 % of student’s grade)
Essays (25% of student’s grade)
Chapter Assessments – Socratic Seminar, Quizzes, etc. (20% of student’s grade)
Projects (10% of student’s grade)
TRENDINGTrending is a tool I use to reward
students who work to improve their performance over the course of the year:
1st Quarter – D+/C-2nd Quarter – B-3rd Quarter – B+4th Quarter – A
This grade trend is taken into consideration in calculating the student’s final grade
EXPECTATIONS1. The student will complete all reading
assignments2. The student will be ready to participate
in class and will participate responsibly3. The student will advocate for him/herself4. The student will make up all
assessments and missing work in a reasonable amount of time (1 week is the expectation)
