FLEXIBLE REPORTING EMC M&R features all the necessary tools to customize reports and create new ones from the ground up. These tools include a graphical, wizard-driven Report Builder and a Formula Editor, both of which use mathematical and Boolean operators to define custom key performance indicators (KPIs).

SERVICE LEVEL MONITORING By consolidating both business and technology metrics, EMC M&R allows contractual SLA measurement and reporting. The product’s flexibility can define most complex SLA formulas, exclude maintenance periods, track in real-time the compliance for every SLA indicator, as well as publish SLA reports for customers.

ANALYTICS AND ALERTING As performance data is collected, EMC M&R continuously analyzes, in real-time, thousands of metrics across the whole network, including both system and application components. Any suspicious activity is reported and documented in a global report called: “Situations to Watch”. Alerts are sent as soon as a potential problem (current or projected) is detected, using either fixed thresholds or adaptive thresholds based on the baseline deviation. This enables operations staff to proactively respond to performance issues before they impact service levels.

SECURE WEB PORTAL WITH ROLE/PROFILE ACCESS CONTROL EMC M&R features a GUI-based Security Manager. Roles and profiles ensure restricted access through the portal and dashboards are fully configurable. In addition, administrators can configure user roles and profiles for a particular user group using an external authentication system (i.e., LDAP). Each user profile can be presented with its own targeted information about service level and performance summaries:

COLLECTORS Collectors are used to retrieve raw data from multiple sources such as SNMP, SSH devices, Network Management Systems (NMS), Element Management Systems (EMS), Cisco NetFlow, VoIP equipment and enterprise data (i.e., SQL databases, files, home-grown tools). Collectors can easily be scaled and deployed as business grows.

BACKEND AND DATABASE The backend module receives, normalizes and consolidates the collected data. Data aggregation is performed for report acceleration and data retention is managed for storage optimization. The database module is self-maintaining and supports MySQL and Oracle with an open and documented schema.

WEB PORTAL A secure Web Portal displays performance and SLA reports to operations, engineering and customers. Advanced features include a graphical ReportBuilder, a Formula Editor to compute complex KPIs, an Outage Editor to exclude and document maintenance periods, an LDAP authentication support, a profile-based security, a centralized management GUI and console integration with NMS/EMS applications.

SOLUTIONPACKS & THE SOLUTIONPACK (SP) CENTER SolutionPacks are integrated packages providing a list of reports, pre-configured alerts and automation required for EMC M&R module dependencies to effectively monitor the performance of the managed infrastructure. Since the introduction of the SRM Suite 3.0, Watch4net (now known as EMC M&R) is no longer a single product within the suite, but rather a completely embedded technology within a single unified application. The suite removed the distinction between the previous underlying products (SCA, Prosphere, and Watch4net) and offered a single install, single data collection layer and single UI. THE EMC M&R (WATCH4NET) SERVER The EMC M&R Server is composed of:

THE WEB PORTAL • The Browse Mode: Users access the information by connecting to the EMC M&R

Web Portal, and see the dashboards based on their role and profile. Users have multiple ways to access information quickly and efficiently via a navigation tree, a search engine, a report wizard and drill-down facilities.

• The Edit Mode: Users and Administrators can graphically define new reports or modify existing ones. Through this user interface, users can select a group of resources, type of graphs, time periods, and define their own KPIs via a formula editor. Maintenance periods can also be configured to exclude outages, before and after the fact, so SLAs are correctly computed in real-time.

• The Alerting Engine: Set thresholds (fixed or adaptive) and configure actions like SNMP traps, emails, instant messages, scripts executions, etc.

• The Data Enrichment module: Provide supplemental information on the data polled to provide a more complete representation of your environment (Customers IDs, SLA level, Coordinates, etc.).

• The Centralized Management: Empower administrators in their day-to-day tasks of managing EMC M&R in a distributed environment with a simple web interface. The administrator is able, from one central place, to: manage user roles and profiles; monitor the health of EMC M&R servers; list EMC M&R servers with their respective modules; execute tasks on remote servers; control licenses; access audit logs; perform installs; and upgrade operations.

THE BACKEND AND DATABASE EMC M&R manages its embedded MySQL engine, limiting the daily administration efforts needed from your perspective. Oracle Enterprise can also be used as the backend’s data repository. The EMC M&R backend listens for all incoming data (sent by the collectors), aggregates and preserves it to the storage medium. The data is normalized to ensure conciliation and cross-domain performance analysis, providing users with end-to-end visibility across the entire infrastructure. The EMC M&R repository is open and documented in order to facilitate OSS integration and data-warehouse initiatives.

THE GEOMAPS Allows live and dynamic reporting of resources on a geographical map.

The EMC M&R distributed architecture scales out at 3 layers of the product: Data Collection layer for raw data collection, Storage and Analysis layer for backend data ingestion, process and database storage, and finally the Presentation layer offering client access via a secure web portal. The database layer is horizontally scalable to accommodate data sizing and distribution. The Presentation layer can be scaled to accommodate multi concurrent user sessions load balanced across multiple servers (if required) to allow reporting on the entire infrastructure. EMC M&R unifies collected data and associated measurements to provide a single pane of glass view.

PRODUCTION SERVER: The EMC M&R (Watch4net) Production Server License includes: Web Portal with unlimited concurrent user connections, ReportBuilder, Outage Editor, Backend/Frontend modules, Alerting Engine, Device Discovery. EMC M&R server is the platform used by the SolutionPacks for EMC’s ViPR SRM, Service Assurance Suite and ViPR product lines.

WEB SERVICE API: Leverages the different web services to provide integration with 3rd party tools. The EMC M&R Web Service leverages Enterprise Standards like SOAP and WSDL to allow the retrieving of raw data from the database or generated reports.

The navigation is intuitive and allows fast access to the right report.

SolutionPacks are prebuilt integration solutions for a specific technology domain or vendor application. A SolutionPack includes all the necessary collectors and instrumentation – data collection template, KPI definition, reporting templates – required to effectively monitor the performance of the managed infrastructure. SolutionPacks provide the differentiation to the ASD portfolio as they are addressed by the product lines (EMC ViPR SRM, EMC Service Assurance Suite and EMC ViPR).

EMC M&R is the core technology common across the ASD portfolio of products. It supports a flexible collection and presentation layer enabling it to manage multiple technologies and cross vendor devices. This support enables EMC’s Professional Services organization, as well as, partners and end customers to build their own SolutionPacks based on specific requirements.

Note: Some SolutionPacks may require the assistance of EMC’s Professional Services organization to ensure all aspects of the deployment are managed to deliver seamless operation.

EMS / NMS CONSOLIDATE DATA IN ONE UNIFIED PLATFORM The collectors automatically retrieve and analyze the data available in the EMS/NMS/OMCs (performance measurements, events, topology, and business service definitions) in order to present global reporting and cross-domain analysis in Watch4net.

This approach ensures a streamlined performance reporting processes with fault management systems and element management systems. SolutionPacks that contains hundreds of out-of-the-box, preconfigured reports, KPIs and thresholds providing quick implementation (day-one reports) and strong ROI. Depending on the EMS/NMS, the integration can also be at the console layer (bidirectional integration) and at the alerting layer (alert notification to fault consoles).

• SolutionPack for Alcatel Lucent 5620 Service Aware Manager (SAM): Enables users to gain insight into key network management parameters reported on by the Alcatel Lucent 45630 SAM by providing a real-time view and analysis of router performance via reports for such parameters as CPU usage, Availability, Memory, and Port/Interface etc. As well, reporting on KPIs provide an in depth visibility into MPLS interfaces, Tunnels (SDPs), and VRF statistics. Coupled with customer traffic and service level statistics reports, users can more easily identify L2/L3 performance degradation, routing and capacity issues.

• SolutionPack for EMC Host Interface: Provides discovery of physical servers and enables a global view of all hosts in a data center with a drill down on host topology, capacity utilization and performance measurements on hosts. Reports host capacity by summarizing storage LUNs mapped on host file systems and provides a detailed report on Storage Capacity are provided via the Physical Host SolutionPack.

• SolutionPack for EMC Smarts: Enables users to quickly understand and take action on developing conditions across their network infrastructure. Provides the ability to visualize events and availability metrics across network, storage and server environments, both physical and virtual, with a unified user interface experience.

• SolutionPack for EMC Smarts Network Configuration Manager (NCM): Provides a keen understanding of the inventory and assets, compliance, and changes being performed on any NCM Application Server. Provides a wide spectrum of reports regarding NCM Application Servers.

• SolutionPack for Microsoft SCOM: Connects to the SCOM server(s) to retrieve topology and metrics on the SCOM-monitored devices and applications, and presents real-time/historical performance reports.
