October 1451-May 20, 1506
Born in Republic of Genoa (Italy) but sailed for Spain
In 1492, Columbus set sail for the New World, finding present day Bahamas
Voyages opened up the new world to European colonization
New World was a source of gold and silver, human labor, timber, fertile lands, new plants, and new converts to Christianity
Spain was a major player early on (2 million square kilometers)
Start at port of Gualalquivir Then stop for supplies at Matinique,
Dominica, or Guadeloupe Next is Havana and Veracruz Great voyage-10 days to Canaries, 40
days to West Indies, extra 10 to mainland (60 days=2 months)
Usually between 2-6 months
1500’s- 250,000
1600’s- 450,000
1700’s- 50,000
300 year total- 800,000
Younger Spanish men who were capable of doing work and having kids (foreigners usually not accepted)
