ID

• Taenia species• The proglottids were immature and could not

be speciated. • Need to obtain mature proglottids or a scolex

Page 8: Mr1 9-14

Taeniasis

• Taenia solium (pork), Taenia saginata (beef), and Taenia asiatica (asian pork)

• Saginata and asiatica very similar and have humans as the only definitive host with adult living in GI tract.

• Taenia solium may be definitive or intermediate host in humans.

Page 9: Mr1 9-14

Taenia species

• Behind the scolex is a short skinny neck in which further proglottids (segments) are formed. The elongating chain of proglottids called strobila.

Page 10: Mr1 9-14

Taenia species

• Mature proglottids are hermaphroditic and produce eggs.

• Eggs from all taenia species are identical

oncosphereThick brown striated shell

Life cycle

• Ingestion of eggs or proglottids by intermediate host

• Larval oncospheres are activated, egg escapes• Penetrates the intestinal mucosa• Migrates to tissue and develops a cysticercus

(single scolex)• Ingestion by definitive host• Scolex develops into adult tapeworm

Taenia species

• Clinical presentation: usually patients become aware with passage of proglottids. Mild abdominal pain/discomfort, nausea, Change in appetite, weakness, weight loss.

Page 14: Mr1 9-14

Taenia species

• Diagnosis: detection of eggs or proglottids in stool ( or cellophane tape test), eosinophilia or elevated IgE may be detected.

• Treatment: Praziquantel 10 mg/kg one time dose

• Prevention: cook meat (cuts) to 145 C with a three minute rest period and (ground) to 160 C

Cysticercosis/neurocysticercosis

• Larval forms (Taenia solium) in the tissue of humans. • From ingestion of T. solium eggs usually

autoinfection or from close contact with a tape worm carrier.

• Presents as seizures, HA, increased ICP, change in vision, dizziness, ataxia, or confusion.

• Praziquantel occasionally causes an inflammatory response in the CNS

• Need close monitoring and high dose glucocorticoids
