My, what a changing world we live in. “Technology rules!” is the mantra of those that market everything from robots that live in your kitchen to cars that park themselves. The youth of today are growing up in a world that shines
of glass, plastic and Wi-Fi signals. Gopher tails no longer adorn the outdoor biff y wall, 2 cent Hubba Bubba bubble gum and 6 cent cokes are nowhere to be found. ‘So what’ you say…times change. While times do change there are many things that we try to keep the same or at least close to the way it used to be. Being aware of and maintaining a link with the past helps us forge our future. Respecting Tradition and honoring our heritage have remained as most honorable goals.
Have you ever wondered what the world of rodeo will be like 5, 10 or 20 years from now? I suspect many of us haven’t given it much thought and have just assumed things will stay much the same as they are today. Well, if you are one of those cowboys or cowgirls who thinks things aren’t about to change much at the old stampede you may need to sample a bit of reality. Think about some of the things that may cause signifi cant change to what you know and enjoy as rodeo today.
Our social structure and values, changing demo-graphics, the public’s expression of needs and demands based on real life priorities, the balance
of environment and economy, the sustainability of our resource development and utilization and global factors will dictate the future and design of our lifestyle in spite of what we as individuals may dream, wish or pray for. Imagine for a moment some of the changes the next generation of rodeo administrators and promoters will need to address:
Who will be our audience? Where will they live? What age will they be? Will they know much about “things country”? What knowledge of our sport or lifestyle will they have? What will be their expectations? What will infl uence their inter-est? What other activities will compete for their interest and
time? Will many in society consider us relevant? Will they come back again?
Who will be our competitors? Where will they live? What will draw them to
our sport? How will they get started? Who will be their mentors? What other options will be available for them? Will fi nancial considerations have serious negative impact on opportunity?
What form and content will constitute our rodeos? What product will we put on display? How will we build in our audience’s technological expectation? What format and event changes might we anticipate?
What will be the impact of economic factors on the op-portunity for stock contractors to continue to operate viable businesses? What additional challenges will they face to satisfy changing requirements related to livestock tracking, animal health, safety and humane treatment?
What infl uence will social conscience adjudicators have on the make- up of future rodeo productions? Some of us still can’t get our head or tongue around ‘tie down roping’ but this small change in response to social and political pressure that appears to make us apologetic for calling it calf roping for over 100 years is a huge change that signals more serious debate of social views and values in the future. How will rodeo be forced to react to changing public and political expectation?
Where will we hold our rodeos? Who will make up the committees? Who will provide sponsorship? What will be the imperative to infl uence rodeo sponsorship? What new challenges will future committees need to deal with?
How will we market our product? What approaches may be needed to generate interest and a fan base? What will we do to draw a crowd and have them come back again? Who will be our rodeo ambassadors? What image will we build?
Certainly this is not a complete identifi cation of all the issues that will impact the future design, delivery and sus-tainability of rodeo in Manitoba but it should be enough to cause us to stop and think about how we might prepare to address the challenges that are now before us. What should rodeo associations do to ensure a future for what we all consider to be such an important link to the past in terms of rural tradition and heritage?
I have fond and thankful memories of having had the op-portunity to be part of the group that undertook to form the Interlake Rodeo Association which today we know
as the MRCA. I also have fond memories of having helped the HRA become established in Manitoba as an alternative association where family oriented rodeo production was the goal. I have witnessed and admired the dedication and hard work that so many people have put into advancing rodeo in Manitoba and I very much respect and appreciate their eff orts and contributions. The clowns, the bull fi ghters, the rodeo secretaries, the timers, the announcers, the stock contractors, the chute boss, the stock handlers, the arena directors, the pick-up men, the judges and many others are there every rodeo doing their part to ensure the crowd, the sponsors, the volunteers and the competitors are provided a fi rst class experience. And behind the scenes the associa-tions’ executive who spend countless hours tending to the administration and operation of the business of rodeo; they all deserve much thanks for all that they do.
But back to the question of what will we do collectively to ensure a positive future for rodeo in this province?
As a start it would make so much sense if we all adopted a common goal regardless of what group, association or entity we belong or relate to. A goal that would represent and move us to support a common cause; the advancement of the World of Rodeo and Cowboy tradition in Manitoba. Moving forward with common cause would pay huge dividends and adopting a united approach to upcoming challenges would help us gain the strength and the wherewithal necessary to secure a niche in the recreation and entertainment fi elds in our province.
Our ability to move forward will be infl uenced by how well we prepare and deliver our messaging and our product to the public. Fundamental to such an approach will be the need to develop a strategic plan that essentially provides an opportunity for all that have interest to outline where we are and where we would want to be in the near and longer term future in Manitoba. Traditionally rodeo associations have dealt with the problems of the day. This focus on solv-ing issues that arise needs to be replaced by a systems approach where the bigger longer term picture receives the attention. Strategic plan-ning is an inclusive process that provides opportunity for all stakeholders or those that have an interest to work together to develop a vision of where we are today and where we hope to go. It is an ongoing journey that does not have a single destination or end point. It is forever evolving. This visioning process does not suggest any need to amalgamate rodeo associa-tions. In fact there are probably many advantages to having separate entities but on the larger front we do need them to have a common theme to their messaging. Traditional focus on promoting your product over the competition is what makes the free market tick but those who market for today only are destined to be out of business before long. So too will the market place have negative impact on our business line if we collectively fail to cooperate in designing and selling the path forward.
You may not share my belief that we are dangerously close to becoming even more irrelevant than we are already to mainstream society. You may feel things will
just take care of themselves and life will go on and we’ll be spurin’ and ropin’ forever. But ask yourself; will my children, grandchildren or their grandchildren have the opportunity to be involved with our rodeo lifestyle as we know and love it today? A wake up call is coming soon if we fail to read the signs and focus only on enjoying today.
Rodeo in Manitoba is facing a signifi cant challenge to remain relevant in the face of societal changes at the local and global level. Earning a market share is fundamental to existing as a busi-ness and expanding that market share is essential to remain in business. This is of course not a sud-den revelation and the sport of rodeo has been trying to address this con-undrum for many years. Being relevant is a key element of earning acceptance which then leads to being promoted. I often think of a personal example that says a lot about just where we really are and how little things have changed. Sometime around 1970-71 (memory is becoming less clear) I chaired the Interlake Rodeo asso-ciation’s fi rst Public Relations Committee. I had the good fortune of working with individuals like Lee Bellows who were committed to getting the Word out about our sport and who understood the importance of promotion. I recall our eff orts to convince the Winnipeg Free Press to publish weekend rodeo results. “Ya right, we’ll get right on that” was about all we got in spite of our off er to hand deliver the information every Monday morning following a weekend rodeo. Well things haven’t changed much except in the past 40 years more and more people have moved to the city and become further disconnected and less interested in what’s going on in the country. So the challenge remains…put a product out there that is so interesting, fun, enjoyable, educational, aff ordable, and accessible that uptake by the public will show a noticeable upswing.
But it’s not that simple is it? If it were we would not see prairie icons like the once popular Standardbred racing on their last legs, Assiniboia Downs would not
be short hundreds of horses for the summer race meet, the list of once popular “country “ events that traditionally drew hundreds of spectators that are no longer enjoying much public interest is long and includes the country fairs, the horse pulls, the plowing matches, local horse shows and
much more. It’s the old catch 22; sponsors need to see results to their bottom line that justifi es their contribu-tion but what do we have to off er. Many rodeos that were considered solid are no longer held and many rodeos that do continue hardly raise enough money through gate receipts to cover many expenses. The Volunteer pool in many towns has been depleted often leaving
one or two dedicated individuals to do it all, which of course is not sustainable.
We probably have a good enough sense of the problem and dwelling further on “what’s wrong” is counter product-ive. So where to from here? The way I see it is that current executives of the Western Way (as I call it) will need to show leadership and form an oversight committee with sub com-mittee structures to work cooperatively on a Strategic Plan for Horse based Western sport promotion.
If the idea seems too broad and a more narrow scope is considered best then let’s let the rodeo world set the pace and get at it.
A concerted coordinated eff ort to build our sport for the future must start now.

This is Madison Long, and I will be handling the MTPA newsletters this season. I have been team penning for quite some time and I’m very excited to lend a hand and give something back to our sport. If anyone has anything they would like added to the newsletter they can contact me on my cell phone, 204-573-1677, or email me at [email protected]. TEAMBROKER NOTE
We now have a “team broker”, Robert Bruneau. You can give him a call whenever you are looking for teams and he will set you up best he can for shows. This is to make it easier for new penners to make teams as they are new to our sport and don’t know as many people yet. We want to get new people involved in team penning and make them feel welcome and comfortable. This does not however limit anyone who isn’t a new penner to calling Robert if they want more teams for an upcoming show.

How will it work?
The sponsorship money will be used to partially off set entry fees for all Junior and Senior Youth penning in the Senior and Junior Youth classes (does not apply to regular classes).
The youth will pay a nominal fee of $5.00 per run, the Sponsorship fund will pick up the other $15.00
Youth will make entries as usual and then the MTPA will reimburse the show committee the entry fee owing less the $5.00 per youth.
Adults penning in the Junior youth will pay the regular entry fee
Junior Youth will be able to pen “up” into the Senior Class if they can make teams
Payout will be as usualBased on known current youth mem-
bership, there should be enough money in the sponsorship fund for each youth to enter once in each of our shows.
We will use the fund until it runs out or more sponsors are found

THANK YOU 2013 CCHA SPONSORS
Crocus Cowhorse news:• Feb 9 was the date of a Dale Clearwater classroom clinic, organized by Derek Arbez and partially hosted by CCHA. The event was held at Thunderbird Horse Center and attended by more than 25 Cow Horse enthusiasts. Training and showing strategies were discussed, along with expectations and judging of the classes.
•CCHA had a booth at Horse 3 where judging videos were shown. These videos can be borrowed by CCHA members through our website. Several members also participated in the Taylor Douglas clinic, which this year gave us 2 days on cattle. A demonstration of a Reined Cow Horse class was done by Ken Grainger on Boggies Holliday and narrated by Larry Cliff ord. Also, CCHA member Neil McLeod conducted a colt starting clinic.
•Our show that’s in conjunction with the MQHA Summer Sizzler show has some exciting news! MQHA is off ering a Ranch Pleasure class, which will be run as in the Versatility class. The cutting, reining and working cow classes will all be eligible for both CCHA and AQHA points. If interested in achieving AQHA points, an exhibitor must show according to AQHA rules. These rules are available on the AQHA website, under handbook. (CCHA members don’t have to show in the AQHA division)
•May 18th will be a clinic at Michie Quarter Horses, 204-637-2104.
•Remember, memberships are due! The price is the same as in 2012. Forms are available through the website or contact Ken Grainger at: graingka@inethome. ca. Breeders advertising in the Cowboy will be adjusted according to the current 2013 membership in the next issue.
Remember to check out our Facebook page and our website: www.crocuscowhorse.com com

SPONSORS 2012
Hey everyone!!!
Welcome to the 2013 rodeo season!!!We have Miami, Souris, Arborg, Minnedosa and a welcome addition, Richer
Rough stock rodeo!!!The HRA board has been working really hard to provide more rodeos, but we
are fi nding that the small towns are having trouble fi nding volunteers and the funds needed to put a rodeo on. We are asking that if the members know of any towns/persons that would be interested in putting a rodeo on, to please contact the board! We are also open to ideas and suggestions in this regard.
Rodeo it is a part of our heritage and we need to keep it going! Young or old we can all play a part in promoting the sport! Something as little as stopping in for a bite to eat and letting them know how much “HRA members” appreciate them giving our families a place to rodeo! I would like to be able to give my kids and grandkids the same opportunity that I was given. Loading up the trailer and heading to the rodeo, enjoying time spent with family and friends!
So in saying that I encourage you to keep promoting the life style we live!!
–Lacey Marshall
