University (4 time National Football

Champions!)

• Masters Degree in Music Education

from the University of Georgia

• Interlochen Arts Camp Alumnus.

• 2020-2021 will be my 11th year of

teaching

• Flute Player for over 25 years!

• I come from a family of educators

• French Horn player for over 17 years!

• My parents have gone on record stating

they “never had to tell me to practice.”

• Have been on several albums:

• Married for over 6 years to Mr. Irby (who is a trumpet and French horn player)

Introducing The Instruments• The next few pages will give you an overview of the different instruments that we play

in band.

• Do you have a brother or sister that played in the band?

• Did your parents play an instrument when they were in school?

• Take a look at all the different instruments and see if you find one that you like.

• Once school begins in August you will have a chance to play them all to find the right fit

for you. If you are worried about what instrument to play don’t be, Mrs. Irby will help

you every step of the way.

FLUTE• Woodwind instrument, oldest

instrument in the world!

• To make a sound you simply blow

across a lip plate, like blowing

through a coke bottle.

• Famous Flute Players: Lizzo, James

OBOE & BASSOON• A double reed instrument; the two

reeds that vibrate together to create a

sound.

• Famous Oboe Players: Julia Roberts,

• Fun Fact! Most instruments with

college scholarships involve Oboe

and Bassoon players

CLARINET • A woodwind instrument played with

a reed, which vibrates against a

mouthpiece to create sound.

• Usually the largest section in the

band.

• Famous clarinet players: Steven

Spielberg, Jimmy Kimmel, Rainin

Wilson, Eva Longoria, Sara Evans,

Gloria Estefan, Woody Allen

SAXOPHONE• A woodwind instrument played with

a reed, which vibrates against a

mouthpiece to create sound.

• Youngest of all band instruments.

• Famous Saxophone Players: Lionel

Richie, Bill Clinton, Jennifer Garner,

Norah Jones

TRUMPET• A brass instrument, the brightest of all

in the brass family. The sound is produced by buzzing through a mouthpiece.

• Trumpets can play many genres of music: jazz, classical, blues, Dixie, and many more.

• Famous Trumpet players: Ke$ha, Samuel L. Jackson, Richard Gere, Emeril Lagasse, Steven Tyler

FRENCH HORN

• The most versatile brass instrument.

The sound is produced by buzzing

through a mouthpiece.

• Number one brass instrument used

in movie soundtracks

• Famous French Horn players: Ewan

McGregor, Samuel L. Jackson,

Vanessa Williams, Jennifer Lawrence

TROMBONE• The most fun instrument to play. The

sound is created by buzzing

mouthpiece and moving slide up

and down.

• Famous Trombone players: Nelly

BARITONE & TUBA• The largest of the brass instruments that

produce sound the same way that

trumpets and French horns produce

sound.

• Fun fact! It takes more air to make a

sound on a flute than a tuba!

Percussion Instruments • Beginning Percussion Instruments

include: Snare Drum, Bass Drum, Bells, Xylophone, and Cymbals.

• Students who play in the percussion section play many different instruments, not just drums. Percussionists are the most versatile in the band.

• Famous Percussionists: Lil Wayne, Kurt Cobain, Tommy Lee
