THE EIGHTEENTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME — AUGUST 4, 2019
Wasted Work
Nobody likes to waste time. If someone has not done the job and it costs us time and effort, we get angry. If a company promised to deliver by a certain date and it misses the deadline, we are furious. If somebody does the job wrong, and we have to redo it, we hate it. We hate to waste time.
But some of the hard work we do is also wasted. Work may feel valuable because it fills our time. It feels worthwhile if we do it faithfully. But not everything we do has value. Some of it keeps us from doing more important things. Workaholics spend less time with family. People concerned with their own lives may volunteer less for others. Our work and our lives are important, but sometimes not as important as we think.
Qoheleth says everything is vanity; everything is worthless. You spend your life gaining wisdom, knowledge and skill, but at the end of your life you give all your property to someone who has not worked for it. You work all day long. You spend your days in sorrow and grief and your nights without rest. The bleak descriptions by this Old Testament writer keep us humble about our work. We may not be as important as we thought.
Perhaps God gets frustrated with us too. Why do we waste our time? The time we spend with God is never wasted at all.

THE EIGHTEENTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME — AUGUST 4, 2019
Are You Thirsting For God?
Are you someone who would like to learn more about your Catholic Faith? Do you know someone not bap-tized or baptized in a non-Catholic Christian tradition, who is thirsting for what it means to become Catholic?
Do you know someone already Catholic but has not yet received Confirmation & Communion?
Others may be thirsting too…
For each of us faith is a journey marked with moments of conversion along the way…we move from unbelief to initial faith, from sin to repentance, from painful isolation to the joyful experience of a loving community, from fear to love.
Faith, conversion, repentance, celebration and community ---five basic elements that are present in the Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults (RCIA). The RCIA provides a setting where the journey of faith and moments of conversion can be celebrated within the local Church community.
RCIA is a place to ask questions and seek understanding. Come and See! Invite a friend! All are Welcome! RCIA meets Sunday’s at Little Flower School from 10:15 A.M. to 11:15 A.M. For more information, contact the Parish Office at (301)994-0525.
Bible Study will be taking a recess until
September. Please look in the bulletin for the
exact date we will resume our studies and consider
joining us on Wednesday evenings. Have a happy
and safe summer!
Like Mary and Joseph, families have a
mission to welcome Jesus into their
homes and lives, to “listen to him, speak
with him, take care of him, protect him
and grow with him, and in this way
improve the world.” -Pope Francis
The Catholic Church recognizes that parents
are the primary and principal educators of the
children, especially the task of faith formation.
We at Holy Face Church, are here to assist
parents by providing structured classes and
sacramental preparation programs to help
families recognize the connection between our
Catholic faith and the way we live our lives.
2019-2020 Faith Formation registration will
begin soon. Tuition for One Student: $75; Two
Students: $120; Three or more Students: $150.
Please contact Father Jerry at 301-994-0525 if
you would like to set up a payment plan or if
you need to apply for a tuition reduction or
waiver.
The Faith Formation program is possible
thanks to the dedication of wonderful

Installation of Council Officers
The Installation of Council Officers stands as an annual reminder to council officers of their duty to shape and build the character of their members in the love of neighbor and the love of God by offering and conducting charitable programs, which strengthens our parishes and builds up the Domestic Church. The life, health, and strength of the council is dependent upon the actions of Catholic fraternal leaders taking action and working together.
Following Mass last Saturday, the installation of Holy Face council officers was conducted by District Deputy SK Jim Huse and District Warden SK John Cruz with support from the KofC Color Guard. State Treasurer, Chris Powers and Lady Annie were in attendance along with family and friends of council officers. On behalf of the Officers who are retiring from their posts, we extend to our worthy successors our warmest congratulations, assurance of continued cooperation, and prayerful wishes for a most successful administration.
Following the installation, a banquet was held in the church hall. Several Brother Knights were awarded Length of Service Pins. The Holy Face Council Knight of the Year selection was announced as well as the 1st and 2nd runner-up. The selection was based on total hours provided in support of our charitable programs in which at least two Brothers participated. Second runner-up was Brother Dan Bronk with 74.5 hr. First runner-up was Brother Chris McGraw with 91 hr and our Knight of the Year was our new Worthy Grand Knight, SK Chuck Shilling at 120 service hr. Congratulations WGK Chuck! Thank you for your dedicated service to the council.
Holy Face Family of the Year
Following Mass on Saturday, WGK SK Chuck Shilling presented a plaque and gift certificate to the Getson family who were selected by the Holy Face council as Family of the Year. The Getson family, Scott, Kristi, Matt, and Luke were recognized for their dedicated service to the Holy Face Parish and the community in general. Scott serves on the Parish Council, is a Lector and serves in a leadership role for Matt and Luke’s Boy Scout Troop. Kristi has been a member of the finance committee, is an Extraordinary Minister and Sacristan, and assists individuals with disabilities. Matt and Luke are Altar Servers and attend Catholic Schools. Scott and Kristi also chair a fund raiser that generates $15,000 annually for Little Flower School. The Getson family exemplifies the Knights of Columbus mission of “Serving Christ through Serving Others”.
