TRUMBULL PUBLIC SChOOLSNEW TEXT REVIEW/APPROVAL PROCESS

Date Submitted: December 2,2016

Title of Text: Practk’c Coach Plus Grade 8 Alathematics

Author: Triumph Learning

Publisher: Triumph Learning

Year Published: 2015

ISBN Number: 978-1-6340-3223-0

Core’ or Supplemental: Core

Course: Pre-Algebra

Grade Level: 8-10

(If applicable) Replaces text: N/A

Rationale for adopting new text: Middle school mathematics teachers and team leaders sought ahigh-quality text to support instruction in Pre-Algebra. Open-ended practice, individual lessonintroductions, and depth of knowledge of questions were compared in texts from two ditferciitpublishers ([bit McDougal and Triumph Learning) Triumph Learning’s Practice Coach l’his (kad€ BAfathematics was selected, as it bust provided lilstibetionaI models and rigorous applications to coremathematics standards and assessments.

Text Description: Triumph Learning’s Practice Coach Plus (hat/c 8 Mathc, natzc.c is a grade—level,standards-based program. Questions presented encourage conceptual understanding and higher-orderthinking skills rather than recall. Each lesson is geared to ensure student comprehension as it presentsthe core idea (with new concepts, modeled skills, examples, connections), a coached example, andfocused practice including an end-of-unit practice test that can he used for formative or summativeassessment. This text will support and extend independent practice and application of standards-basedmathematics lessons.

Strengths: Practice Coach Plus Grade 8 Mathematics supports our newly developed instructionalunits in Pie-Algebra. The selection of activities, strategies, and assessments will guide and reviewunderstandings of the standards and assist students as they apply these understandings to grade-levelstandards. As a consumable, the text will also allow students the opportunity to use the resource as astudy guide for previously-taught concepts.

Weaknesses: There are no perceived weaknesses to the text; it will supplement, not replace, the coreMath Accelerated text for Pre-Algebra.
