A fire erupts. You get something in your eye or spill
something on your skin. You ingest a chemical or poison. You are confused about the directions /
procedures. Disposing of chemical waste or materials. You didn’t finish the lab. You have been injured. Equipment is not working properly. You wear contacts. When in doubt, ask the instructor, not your
friends!
Any time chemicals, heat or glassware are used.
Basically ALL THE TIME
They stay on your face, covering your eyes!
No contacts
Personal eyeglasses DO NOT protect your eyeballs!
This includes GUM!!!! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5vw4qr8VfiU
Wear your goggles at all times.
Have your hair tied back or kept entirely out of the way with a hair band, hairpins, etc.
Wear closed- toed shoes, NO SANDALS OR FLIP FLOPS.
Refrain from wearing loose clothing and dangling jewelry.
This is never OK!
You are expected to behave and act appropriately in the lab and classroom.
We don’t want you to end up in the hospital.
BAD IDEA
If lab stations are set up in the classroom, DO NOT TOUCH THEM, until the instructor tells you to do so.
It’s never okay to touch or fool around with any equipment in the lab or classroom.
Never remove chemicals or other equipment from the lab.
You are never allowed to enter the chemical storage area, touch the eye wash station, the emergency shower, or the fire extinguisher, just to see if it works. The eyewash, shower, and fire extinguisher are for emergencies
only! ALWAYS know where these items are located.
We will review how to use them.
Ms. Kim didn’t follow
directions and now she
is in BIG trouble!
Won’t this look cute on Instagram?
NOOOO!
“Ms. Kim, this is going get so many likes on my Facebook!”
It’s never okay to touch or fool around with any equipment in the lab or classroom, even if your friends think it’s funny!
1. Chipped or cracked glassware is okay to use.
2. You must read the procedures thoroughly before beginning the lab.
3. It’s okay to conduct unauthorized experiments.
4. It’s okay to pick up broken glass with your bare hands as long as the glass is placed in the trash.
5. You can remove chemicals from the lab and take them home?
6. Goggles are optional.
7. Feel free to eat in the lab and drink out of the beakers.
Failure to comply to this rule could result in an unfortunate accident.
Please be mindful, careful, and alert.
Pick up after yourself. Wash tables. The sinks are NOT trash cans. DO NOT put anything down the
sink. Clean up your own trash. Backpacks and cell phones are to
stay in the designated area (front of the room).
Never put anything in your mouth.
It’s not even funny to play around.
Even if edible food is being used, you MUST NOT put it in your mouth. Just because it’s food doesn’t mean it didn’t touch something that could hurt you.
Hot glass looks the same as cold glass.
Chipped or cracked glassware should never be used. Make sure you check it for chips or cracks prior to using.
Never pick up hot glass with your bare hands, use tongs.
Never use dirty glassware, clean it.
Carefully handle all glassware with TWO hands.
Code Red! Teacher!!!
Never leave a lit burner
unattended!

Watch the video and write down as many violations as you can!
You will have a lab safety test.
Read over the contract.
Look over this PowerPoint on my website.
Bring the lab safety contract back signed by you and your parent / guardian.
Reference the sheet in your notes as I go over the various pieces of equipment on the table.
