Slide 2 Ms. Farrars 1 st Grade Social Studies Class Arizona State Symbols State Flag State Seal State Bird State Flower State Tree Teachers Objectives Slide 3 Objectives: Students will be able to identify the official flower, tree, bird, flag, and seal of the state of Arizona. Students will be able to describe characteristics of each of these five state symbols. Slide 4 State Flower: Saguaro Blossom o The state flower is the saguaro (su-wah-ro) blossom. o It is white with a yellow center. o Each flower blooms for one night only. o Blossom season is during May and June. Slide 5 State Tree: Palo Verde o The state tree is the palo verde (pal-oh ver-dee). o Palo verde is spanish for green pole or green stick. o The trunk, branches, and leaves are green, and the flowers are yellow. Slide 6 State Bird: Cactus Wren o The cactus wrens coloring is spotted brown and black with a white stripe near the eyes. o They build nests in saguaro and cholla (choy-uh) cactus and in palo verde and acacia (uh-kay-sha) trees. o The cactus wren is 7-8 inches long. Slide 7 Arizona State Flag o The state flag of Arizona has a copper star in the center representing the copper mining industry in the state. o There are 13 red and yellow stripes representing the 13 original US colonies and the western setting sun. o The bottom is blue, representing liberty. Slide 8 Arizona State Seal o The state seal was adopted in 1911. o The miner represents the states mining business. o The fields represent agriculture (farming). o The mountains and sun represent the comfortable climate.
