    Mrs. Farrells Kindergarten Newsletter

    Monday 2-13 Our day began with the MDP and calendar routine. Once we were done the

    kindergarteners were introduced to two practicum students from Grandview who were in our classroom

    observing for the day. We worked very hard solving story problems using manipulatives and recorded

    our results in our math notebooks. During math centers Mrs. **** and Ms. Farrell worked ondecomposing numbers with small groups. Ms. Farrell read the Story The Little Engine That Could, and

    introduced a new comprehension skill of monitoring and clarifying. We met our new alpha-friend, Zelda

    Zebra. Sound was associated to the letter /z/ with a picture sort. While everyone was working hard at

    their literacy centers, Mrs. **** and Ms. Farrell worked with small groups for reading instruction. After

    lunch we began a new unit for health about safety. Ms. Farrell read the book Stay Away From Strangers

    and we created a list of three important rules about strangers. The students practiced their math and

    literacy skills during our visit to the computer lab using the Starfall website. Ms. Farrell read the book

    Airport, and introduced cockpit, pilot, and runwayfor our new vocabulary words. Our mini-lesson

    focused on stretching words out to and listening to the sounds of each letter. Partners brainstormed a

    non-fiction story to write about to end our day. Library and PE were today.

    Tuesday 2-14 HAPPY VALENTINES DAY!MDP and calendar routine started off our day. We continued

    to work on solving story problems using manipulatives and recording our results in our math notebooks.

    The kindergarteners worked on their centers while Mrs. **** and Ms. Farrell worked with small groups

    continuing to focus on decomposing numbers. Ms. Farrell read the story Vroom, Chugga, Vroom-Vroom.

    We continued to practice monitoring and clarifying for comprehension and literacy. The kindergarteners

    worked very hard at centers while Mrs. **** and Ms. Farrell met with small groups for guided reading.

    Lunch was 30 minutes later than usual for the kindergartners, so after completing centers we watched

    the movie The Little Engine That Could. Ms. Farrell reread Stay Away From Strangers, and we reviewed

    our stranger danger list. As the kindergartners watched The Berenstain Bears Learn About Strangersmovie, students began to pass out their Valentines Day cards and candy. Music and art were today. Our

    day finished with cupcakes, orange juice and opening cards!

    Wednesday 2-15 MDP and calendar routine began our day. The kindergartners used manipulatives to

    solve their story problems and recorded their results in their math notebooks. While students were

    busy at literacy centers Mrs. **** and Ms. Farrell met with small groups for reading instruction. We

    continue to work on short /a/ and short /i/ words. Mrs. Welch visited our room to present a lesson

    involving visual thinking skills. Volunteers defined our three vocabulary words. Our vocabulary jar got

    filled, so the class challenged Ms. Farrell in hangman using our word wall words. Ms. Farrell lost. Our

    school-wide PBIS mini-lesson was today which focused on good choices and bad choices. Art was today.

    Early dismissal.

    Thursday 2-16 Today is picture day! The MDP and calendar routine began our day. We got busy right

    away with math centers. While all the kindergarteners were working hard Mrs. **** and Ms. Farrell met

    with small groups to work on writing numbers and decomposing numbers. Ms. Farrell read Cool Wheels.

    We continued to work on monitoring and clarifying. While students were busy at literacy centers Mrs.

    **** and Ms. Farrell worked with small groups for guided reading. We continue to focus on safety for

    our health lesson. Ms. Farrell read the book Crossing the Street. The kindergartners discussed three

    important rules when crossing the street. Volunteers defined our three vocabulary words and used

    them in a sentence. We continue to work on building short /i/ and short /a/ words. Our mini-lesson

    focused on stretching words out to and listening to the sounds of each letter. We continue to work on

    writing non-fiction stories and discussed facts about our classroom. During writing time the students

    wrote facts about our classroom. Guidance and PE were today.

    Friday 2-17 Happy Friday! The MDP and calendar routine began our day. The kindergarteners

    worked on solving story problems using maipulatives and recorded their results in their math

    notebooks. While the kindergartners were working hard at centers Ms. Farrell met with small groups to

    work on decomposing numbers by playing the hiding game. We reviewed the star of the week story.

    Volunteers identified our three vocabulary words and used them in sentences. The boys and girls were

    busy while Ms. Farrell met with small groups for guided reading instruction. We concluded our safety

    lessons for the week reviewing the three rules for stranger danger and crossing the street. Free time

    was given during writers workshop to write about their choice of topic. Music was today.
