“Now class.
Who can tell
me what it
means to
add?” said
Mrs.
Williams.
“Javier, what does it mean?”
“It means to put more numbers together to make a
number bigger.”
“Great job Javier! Now how about subtraction.”
“What does it mean?”
“Alexandra.”
“Doesn’t it mean to take
away numbers? The
number will get smaller.”
“Great job! Now, click on
the adding and subtracting
picture and listen to this
video to review what they
mean while singing the
song.”
“For homework
tonight, please
do the math
worksheet over
addition and
subtraction.
Also, think
about how to
use addition
and
subtraction!
Have a good
night!”
Alexandra couldn’t wait to tell her parents about her new
favorite song! So, when she got home she ran to her
parents and sang it for them. “Add means put together.
Subtract means take away!” she sang.
“Great job, honey!” said her father.
“Now, could you go play with your
little brother and sister before dinner
please?” “Sure Dad!” said Alexandra.
When Alexandra got to the playroom, her sister and
her brother Zoe and Andrew were fighting over one
of Andrew’s toy trucks. “Andrew won’t share with
me!” screamed Zoe. “It’s my toy!” yelled Andrew.
“But Andrew, you have 6 other toy trucks. Couldn’t you let
Zoe have 1? Be a good brother and share with her please,”
said Alexandra. Andrew gave up and let Zoe have 1 of his
trucks to play with.
Then, Alexandra realized that
Andrew had just subtracted a
toy truck from his collection of
them! Alexandra ran to tell her
parents.
“Mom, Andrew had 6 toy trucks. Then, Zoe wanted 1, so
Andrew gave her 1 of them. So after he shared with Zoe,
Andrew had 5 toy trucks left! 6-1=5” said Alexandra.
__ =
6 - 1 = 5
“That’s right sweetie!
Good job. Did you know
that you can also use
addition in that
situation?” asked
Alexandra’s mom.
“No. How?”
“How many trucks did Zoe have to start?”
“Zero.”
“How many did Andrew give her?”
“One.”
“So, 0+1=?”
+ = ?
“1. Zoe has 1 truck now! I can’t
wait to tell my teacher about
how I used addition and
subtraction tonight with toy
trucks!”
“I’m sure she will love your
examples! Now, why don’t you
help set the table for dinner?”
said Alexandra’s mother.
Alexandra was so happy that
she didn’t mind helping her
mother finish getting ready for
dinner.
