MSA Newsletter Fall 2011TRANSCRIPT
There is nothing like starting anew, and I
am so thrilled to have the wonderful opportunity to join Northwestern’s
community as Vice President for Student Affairs. Diversity and inclusion are vitally
important to any institution of higher learning, and I am eager to contribute to Northwestern’s mission to provide a
welcoming and inclusive environment that embraces the fullness of the human spirit
and encourages openness and engagement.
Thanks to you all for the warm Wildcat welcome, and I look forward
to taking this journey with you! Sincerely,
Patricia Telles-Irvin Dr. Patricia Telles-Irvin Vice President for Student Affairs
On behalf of the Multicultural Student Affairs (MSA) staff, I’d like to welcome
our incoming Wildcats to Northwestern
University and welcome back our returning Wildcats!
We have exciting news to share with you regarding MSA staffing. We are pleased to announce that Louie Lainez has joined MSA permanently as Director of Asian
Asian/American Student Affairs and Charles Kellom has joined our staff as Director of African American Student Affairs. Both are valued additions to the MSA family and we
hope you have the opportunity to work with them this year.
We have also implemented additional facility upgrades, including painting, furniture, and big screen televisions for our conference rooms. Of notable mention is our new MCC television lounge on the
second floor! Special thanks to Lilliana Franco, 2011 Northwestern graduate, for providing the suggestion for the new lounge. We invite
you to stop by to see all the changes in our houses!
We look forward to seeing you at the programs planned throughout October and early November in celebration of National Hispanic Heritage Month.
Sincerely,
Christian Yañez Christian Yañez, Director

Fall 2011
A Snapshot of the Spring 2011 Quarter Asian-Pacific American
Heritage Month Asian/Asian American Student Affairs
(A/AASA) celebrated Asian Pacific American Heritage Month, which included a month-long series of student group
programs, events, and discussions related to the Asian/Asian American community.
Various festivals encouraged students to learn more about their own cultural heritage and others, and faculty from the
Asian American Studies Program collaborated with A/AASA to discuss
topics that included the Los Angeles Riots and Evangelical Christianity among Asian
Americans.
Hispanic/Latino
Community Awards On May 18th, over 40 students, alumni, and staff joined Hispanic/Latino Student Affairs and the Latino Alumni of
Northwestern University (LANU) for our annual Community Awards. Several
awards were presented to individuals who have demonstrated commitment,
dedication and leadership in serving the Hispanic/Latino community at Northwestern. Graduating seniors were
also given special recognition and presented gifts sponsored by LANU.
Black Women’s Retreat T.R.U.E. (The Real YoU Emerging) was
the theme for this year’s Black Women’s
Retreat, which attracted more than 30 students, faculty, staff, and alumnae.
Sponsored by African American Student Affairs and the Women’s Center, the retreat
offered an opportunity for renewal as women shared their strategies for success. Dr. Celeste Watkins-Hayes gave a warm
and relatable keynote address that included personal reflections about her experiences
as a Black Woman. The women left with a mission to take care of themselves, meet their goals, and contribute to building a stronger sense of community at NU.
Black Male Forum The launch of the 1st annual Black Male Forum was a success with over 40 attendees. Faculty member and alumnus
Professor Charles Whitaker provided the welcome, while Mark Crain, a popular young alumnus served as the keynote speaker, and graduate students Ethan
Caldwell and D’Weston Haywood facilitated sessions focused on the experiences of Black males at Northwestern
and ways to continue creating bonds of substance. Tyris Jones, Kamau Massey, and Dallas Wright played important roles as part of the planning committee.
Transitions 101 Workshop During spring quarter, MSA implemented a new program titled Transitions 101:
Student Group Leadership Workshop. Student leaders gained knowledge related to leading a team, conducting effective meetings, conflict management, and
program planning. Newly elected executive board members and returning members from more than 15 student groups
discussed their leadership experiences. Fall quarter, we will launch a Treasurer’s
Retreat which will focus on fiscal responsibility, program planning, and
fundraising strategies.
Cinco de Mayo Celebration More than 60 students, faculty and staff
attended the 2nd annual Cinco de Mayo
Celebration this past spring. In addition to learning about the true significance of the
holiday and enjoying authentic Mexican food, guests were also encouraged to
practice their Spanish during the “tertulia,” led by the Department of Spanish &
Portuguese. Other co-sponsors included the
Latina and Latino Studies Program, Lambda Theta Alpha Latin Sorority, Inc.,
H/LSA Freshman Activities Board and Alianza.
