Developing Technologies.Creating Solutions.

Protecting People.[ Into first place with safety ]

[ Optimal total solutions ]

More than 114 years of experience and capability in comprehensive safety solutions have made MSA a modern and forward-looking company for the protection of people, facilities and the environment.

With around 5,500 staff worldwide, and our ownresearch and development centres in Pittsburgh,Pennsylvania and Berlin, Germany, MSA has become

one of the leading suppliers of the most modernsafety technologies:

Today MSA is already the biggest name for personalprotective equipment and gas measurementtechnology, offering the largest range of productsworldwide.

MSA is one of the few suppliers of permanent gasmeasurement technology that develops and manufactures a complete range of products andintegrates them into system solutions. This is the only possible way to develop optimumsystems that can meet all customer requirements

at an excellent performance-price ratio – an un-beatable case for safety and flexibility.Whether stand-alone, or integrated into existingcontrol and monitoring systems, MSA offers made-to-measure solutions.

[ “Efficient safety is our top priority.” ]

“On our drilling and production rigs, where seve-ral million dollars worth of oil is drilled and pro-duced daily, safety in the event of failure is thesingle most important factor. Intelligent systemswith over 600 sensors that monitor the on-going

operation and care for the safety of people, the environment and the total facility, are indispensable. Only MSA offers me this type ofsecurity with the widest range of technologies –perfectly integrated into a single system.”

Sensors[ Safety starts with the sensor ]

Infrared [ Open Path & Point ]

Sensors play a vitally important role in all gas detection systems. Effective sensing requires accurate, stable and fast-response sensors to achieve good quality and reliable signals. For this reason MSA manufactures and assembles itsown sensors which ensures complete compatibility with the signal processingequipment. To achieve the best possible results, a very wide range of sensingtechnologies is necessary. Many of these technologies have been developed by MSA and are being continually improved to meet increasing marketrequirements.

Many gases absorb infrared light at certain wavelengths. The absorption spectrum is distinctivefor each gas in question. Infrared Open Path and the Point Technology from MSA use electronically-modulated IR radiation sources at two differentwavelengths. One wavelength is typical for the gasto be measured, while there is no infrared absorptionby atmospheric gases for the other wavelength. The signals from both detectors are electronicallyamplified and fed into a microprocessor thatconditions the signals and produces an outputsignal proportional to the gas concentration.

EChem

Electrochemical sensors are typically used to detecttoxic gases in the ppm range. Electrodes separatedby electrolytes are enclosed in a small plastic housing and are connected to an external electroniccircuit. Gas diffuses into the sensor through a per-meable membrane and a small current is generatedby an electrochemical reaction. Since the rate of gas entry into the sensor is controlled by diffusionof the gas through the permeable membrane, the current is proportional to the gas concentration.

The gas sample is drawn into the measuring cham-ber by an integral pump and ionized by UV light. The ionization potential of the UV light is a specificvalue for the gas of interest. Gas molecules are se-parated into ions [RH+] and electrons [e–]. Subjectedto an electrical field, they move to the electrodes.A current is generated and is transformed into a signal proportional to the concentration of the gas.

Flame

A hydrocarbon flame contains a large amount of CO2 gas. This CO2 is selectively measured with an IR sensor at a wavelength of 4.2 µm and the thermalradiation is measured with a second IR sensor. The flicker frequency is measured with a third IR sensor, however, in order to prevent false alarmssuch as those caused by solar radiation. This design of the flame detector can detect a30 x 30 cm pan fire at a distance of up to 60 metreswithin a cone of vision of 90° horizontally and 90° vertically.

Semi-conducters [ Solid-State-Sensor ]

Semi-conductor gas sensors are based on the elec-tronic conductivity effects when gases are adsorbedonto a semi-conductor surface. Resistance changesin the semi-conductor material when exposed togases other than air are converted into an electricalsignal proportional to the concentration of the gas.

Photo-acoustics

Photo-acoustic sensor technology was developed by MSA for the detection of toxic or combustiblegases at very low concentrations. A gas sample isintroduced into the measurement chamber and thesample is exposed to a specific wavelength of pulsed infrared light. If the sample contains the gasin question, it will absorb an amount of infrared lightproportional to the concentration of gas present. The gas molecules heat and cool as they absorb thepulsed infrared energy. The pressure changes result-ing from the heating and cooling of the moleculesare measured by a sensitive microphone located inside the photo-acoustic infrared monitor.

The measurement principle behind this technology isbased on catalytic combustion of the measured gasor vapours in air up to the Lower Explosive Limit [LEL]of the gas. The sensor consists of a pair of matchedelements [PELEMENTS], a detector and compensator. The detector comprises a coil of platinum wire insidea small bead of catalytic material. The compensator is similar but does not contain a catalyst and there-fore does not respond to gas. Combustible gases are oxidised only on the detector element, where theheat generated increases its resistance, producing asignal proportional to the concentration of combus-tible gas. The compensator helps to compensate for changes in ambient temperature, pressure and humidity which affect both elements equally.

[ “Compact, flexible, convenient.” ]

“As refinery operators safety is our first priority. In our search for a compact, flexible and convenient system, all paths led us to MSA.The SUPREMA fire and gas control system offersus maximum safety with maximum flexibility.

Individually configured to our safety require-ments and expandable as necessary. A singlesystem – with a thousand options to matchour various needs.”

SUPREMA[ Safety from a central perspective ]

Highest safety standard requirements and forward-looking technology were the benchmarks for devel-opment of SUPREMA, the safety control centre fromMSA. Digital bus technology guarantees absolute

reliability and the simple implementation of a verywide range of alarm system concepts. With the opencollector driver outputs, relays or other switchingunits can be controlled directly.

[ Tested safety ]

SUPREMA is the first system worldwide to achieve approvalfrom all relevant certifying bodies:Certified by ATEX,TÜV up to SIL 3, NFPA 72 and SOLAS.

[ Made-to-measure safety ]

SUPREMA is Number 1 in made-to-measure safety for all types of demands and sizes of facilities. The scalability and the minimal amount of cabling re-quired by the decentralised configuration enable cost-efficient implementation and ensure high availability.

 Innovative modular configuration providestotal flexibility

Compact construction offers safety in thesmallest space

Easy expandability provides solutionsfrom the simplest application in carparking garages through to safety moni-toring for a complete oil platform

Uncomplicated, intuitive operatingconcepts raise the operational level of safety

[ “Everything fits together.” ]

“Our paper factory has grown steadily in recent years. It was particularly important for us to find safety systemsthat could be easily expanded and thusgrow with us. A small System 9020 wasinitially sufficient for our needs. In thecourse of time, our requirements havegrown. We have switched to SUPREMA,added ULTIMA X for combustible gasesand FlameGard for reliable flame detection. Everything has functioned perfectly – everything just fits together.”

17

System Diversity[ Different applications – total system solutions ]

MSA develops and produces the key components itself, from sensors all the way through to control panels. This is the only way to guarantee the smooth interaction of all components.

MSA has the right system with the correct hardware and software for every requirement.

[ Maximum flexibility – highest reliability ]

From simple, compact, stand-alone monitoringsystems through to complex, scalable, controlsystems of the new generation – the diverse MSAproduct range offers the best possible solution foreach application. Cost efficiency thanks to flexibilityand reliability.
