IsityourambitiontomanagelargebuildingprojectssuchastheMillauViaduct,theworld’shighestroadbridge?Ifso,youshouldfirstgaintheskillsthatfittheneedsoftoday’sandtomorrow’slargeinternationalbuildingprojects.Theconstructionindustryischangingrapidly.3D-printing,shiftingroles,complexlogistics,PublicPrivatePartnershipsandglobalisationarejustsomeofthenewfactorsaffectingthenatureandmanagementofprojects.Complex,innovativeandmultidisciplinaryprojectsinadynamicenvironmentcallforanewbreedofmanagerswhoareabletocombineengineeringwithanalyticalandorganisationalskills.CMEthereforecombinesindividualtechnicalapproachestoprocesses–inwhichgovernanceissues,societaltrendsandmanagementmethodsareintegrated–withcutting-edgedesignandtechnology.

ProgrammeCMEoffersabroadspectrumofcoursesfocusingonthegrowingneedforreforminthebuildingindustry.Theprogrammehasbeendevelopedincloseassociationwiththeconstructionindustryandisprocessanddesign-orientedaswellasproject-based.Itpreparesstudentsforadynamiccareerintheconstructionbusinessbyfocusingonknowledgeofprocesses,lifecycleandriskmanagementandintegratedcontracts,tonamejustafewaspects.AMaster’sdegreeinCMEprovidesstudentswithextensiveknowledgeinthefieldofmanagementandcommunication,withcoursesoncross-culturalmanagement,financialengineeringandprojectmanagementplayinganimportantrole.Thestudentsparticipatinginthisprogrammenotonlydeveloptheirengineering,problem-solvingandcommunicationskills,butalsolearnhowtoachievechangeinthebuildingindustryandassesstheconsequencesfortheconstructionprocessanditsorganisation.CMEismultidisciplinary,internationallyorientatedandofferedjointlybythefacultiesofCivilEngineeringandGeosciences,ArchitectureandtheBuiltEnvironmentandTechnologyPolicyandManagementatTUDelft.

Studentscanchoosetheirownpathwithintheprogramme,assistedbyoneofourstudentadvisors.Theprogrammeoffersfourthatreflectcurrenttrendsandneedsinthemarket.

ProjectManagementexploresanewperspectiveonapplyingOperationsResearch(Decision-MakingEngineering)inDesign&ConstructionManagement.Namely,thisperspectiveisthattechnicalandsocialoptimisationshouldnotbeseparateprocesses,butshouldbeintegratedintoasingledesignandconstructionprocess.

AssetManagementcoversmaintenanceandmanagementsystemsforquality,theenvironmentandsafety.Thesesystemsareincreasinglybecomingintertwined.Howcanweprovidedirection,andwherecanweoptimiseprocesses?Andwhatrolecaninformationtechnologyplay?Assetmanagementisexaminedasthebridginglinkinthesystem.

InfrastructureandEnvironmentfocusesonthebalancebetweeneconomicsandsustainability,whiletakingalllegal,safety-relatedandhumanitarianaspectsintoconsideration.

LegalandFinanceconsidersthefinancialandcontractualissuesrelatedtotheimplementationofcivilengineeringprojects.Itintroducesconceptsandtopicsfromeconomicengineeringandfinance,suchasprojectfinancingandfinancialaccounting.

AlmostallCMEstudentsfindworkwithinthreemonthsofgraduating.CMEgraduatestypicallyfindpositionsasmanagementtraineesatlargecompanieswithinthebuildingindustry,buttheyworkinothersectorsaswell.SomealumnicurrentlyworkforlargemultinationalssuchasShellandKPN,andforconsultancyfirmssuchasMcKinsey,butmostofthemworkforlargenationalandinternationalengineeringfirmssuchasVanOort,RoyalHaskoning,Heijmans,DHV,PRC,BallastNedamandBAM.CMEgraduatesareequallyateasespeakingtotechnicalexpertsandengineersandtomanagement,andoftenworkininterdisciplinaryenvironments.Theyhaveasystematicapproachtoproblem-solving,thinkanalytically,discerntheconnectionsbetweenthetechnicalandsocialaspectsofasituation,andareadeptatrecognisingcommonpatternsthatlinkissuesacrossdomainboundaries.

TheCMEcurriculumdiffersfromthatoftheregularprogrammesinCivilEngineering,becauseitisa3TUmastersprogramme.OneoftheuniquefeaturesoftheCMEprogrammeisitsbroadmanagerialorientation.Itacknowledgesthatinreallife,infrastructureprojectshavetobedesignedandrealisedincomplexenvironments,andthatthesuccessofanycivilengineeringprojectreliesheavilyonthemanagementofthiscomplexenvironment.Ofcoursetherewillalwaysbeemploymentopportunitiesforcivilengineerswhohavebeeneducatedinamono-disciplinaryway.However,today’ssocietyislookingaboveallforengineerswhohavethecapacitytocombineengineeringknowledgeandmanagementskills.TheMaster’sinCMEoffersauniqueprogrammedesignedtoachievejustthat.Combiningtechnicalknowledgeandmanagementskills,theprogrammepreparesstudentsforexcitingjobsintoday’sdemandingconstructionprojectsinaninternationalcontext.

BScdegreefromaDutchuniversityIfyouholdaDutchBScdegreeinCivilEngineering,ArchitectureorPolicy,TechnologyandManagementthatiscloselyrelatedtotheMaster’sprogramme,youwillbeadmitteddirectly.However,ifyourundergraduateprogrammeisnotcloselyrelatedtotheMaster’sprogrammeyouwillberequiredtotakeadditionalcoursesinwhatiscalledabridgingprogramme.Thismaybeastandardprogrammeoritmaybetailoredtoyourspecificsituation.
