• Activities on possible mechanisms of adoption of Reports, Studies and Strategic documents on state level
• NAMAs (National Appropriate Mitigation Activities)
Biodiversity/Environment management challenges in BiH • Environmental protection action plan, biodiversity - important priority
• Biodiversity – to be part of the long term Sustainable Development Strategy of BiH and as a tool to fight poverty
Biodiversity/Environment management challenges in BiH • However, BiH’s biggest challenge is…

“Conservation Management and Biodiversity Monitoring in BiH” Initiative
• UNEP & UNDP joint initiative
• Title: Enhancing Systematic Conservation Management and Biodiversity Monitoring in Bosnia and Herzegovina: Assessment of Conservation Status of the Mountain Prenj Herpetofauna
• Budget: Seed funding
“Conservation Management and Biodiversity Monitoring in BiH” Initiative
• Focus location: Mountain Prenj
• Prenj - mountain range in the Dinaric Alps of southern Bosnia and Herzegovina, located in eastern Herzegovina (near Mostar).
“Conservation Management and Biodiversity Monitoring in BiH” Initiative
Three Project Components:
• Research and inventarisation of
Mountain Prenj herpetofauna and ornithofauna
PC 1
• Innovative tools and evidence-based policy solutions for nature conservation in BiH
PC 2
• Empowerment of local and national stakeholders to play an active role in protection, management and monitoring of biodiversity in BiH
PC 3
“Conservation Management and Biodiversity Monitoring in BiH” Initiative
Long-term project goal
• improved conservation status of Mount. Prenj herpetofanual and ornithofaunal species, supported by a functioning system for biodiversity management and monitoring in Bosnia and Herzegovina
“Conservation Management and Biodiversity Monitoring in BiH” Initiative
Short-term project goal
• Verified list of habitats and species of the herpetofauna and ornithofauna followed with database
• Obtain a final and confirmed list of habitats and species of the Prenj ornithofauna and herpetofauna, in oder to apply the IUCN Red List
• Strengthening national knowledge systems
• Capacity development of decision makers and other key stakeholders
• Link conservation efforts with sustainable livelihoods in the area of mount Prenj
KARST project
• ”Integrating karst peatlands conservation into key economic sectors”
• Duration: 07/2009 - 05/2013
• Budget: 950,000.00 USD (GEF)
• Implementation location: Canton 10, three Municipalities – Livno, Bosansko Grahovo, Tomislavgrad
General goal
• Strengthening the long-term preservation of internationally significant karst systems in BiH
• Provide example for their preservation in the entire region
• Strengthening the policy framework and regulations of spatial planning on cantonal level
• Micro-level impact

government local population
Pro-biodiversity businesses
• Contributions to planning • Tangible contributions to
sectors
Concrete results -raising awareness-
• 15 representative from local government -Slovakian experiences on peatland protection and sustainable development (knowledge increase)
• Equipment and software provided for 7 communal inspectors and officers in Livanjsko polje (all in the function of the spatial plan development and mapping of natural resources)
• 12 media WS - tools and techniques - media campaign -aspect of preserving natural values (great promotion of the field)
Concrete results -raising awareness-
• 8.592 students - raising awareness campaign –biodiversity values
• 40 participants -sessions on cantonal and municipal spatial planning and protection of biodiversity - concrete recommendations for improved status + advocacy
• 7 cantonal inspectors and communal officers – training on rare and endangered species of birds and plants in LP
Concrete results -improving livelihoods-
Micro-capital projects:
• Bosansko Grahovo - handicrafts,
• Possibilities for commercial breeding of white- clawed crayfish in river Sturba
• Promotion of beekeeping in Canton 10
• Institutional protection of Livno wild horses
• Improving gastro offer of the area through protected autochthonous products improvement – Livanjski sir/cheese.
• Employement of returnees and women
Concrete results -policy level and capacity building-
• Hydro-ecological study of Livanjsko polje • Peatland rehabilitation project preparation & submission • Contribution to the Cantonal spatial plan Developed orginal documents and 8 maps on most valuable aspects of biodiversity,: • Zones for water protection, • Comparative maps of current use with map of biodiversity values • Integral proposal for spatial plan • SWOT analysis for land use, analysis of potential impacts of climate changes • Development trends and steps forward
• Cantonal and municipal inspectors - institutional and concrete protection of natural
values. • Holding local informative session of cross-border management of water resources • Create initiatives and promote international formal agreement (Croatia – BiH)
Concrete results -field work and monitoring-
First training for government officers in bird monitoring (on
Cantonal level)
First guidebook on monitoring
Equipment and resources
Popularization!
Education
Conclusion
• Importance of KARST fields and Livanjsko Polje • Utilization of positive practices resulted from KARST project into other
projects (from maps to human resources) • Ensure rehabilitation of the peatland & inspection
• Continuing to monitor bird and indicator plant species population
• Advocating maximum inclusion of products created within KARST project
into spatial plans on cantonal and municipal level
