OverviewPatran 2007r1 is the most comprehensive pre- and post-processing environment
or FEA analysis and helps engineers virtually conceptualize, develop and test
product designs. Used by the worlds leading manuacturing companies as
their standard tool or the creation and analysis o simulation models, Patran
links design, analysis, and results evaluation in a single environment.
For companies wanting to use FEA analysis to reduce the time and cost o the
product development process through the increased use o simulation, Patran is the
best solution or nite element modeling and results visualization and processing. By
enabling engineers to access one o the industrys leading analysis programs rom
MSC.Sotware, Patran can help organizations reduce the cost and conusion
o maintaining multiple pre- and post-processing tools in dierent parts
o the organization and get better products to market, aster.
Through the seamless integration o CAD geometry, pre- and post-processing capabilities
and the ability to perorm sophisticated simulations on virtual parts, assemblies and
structures, Patran is a key part o the design process or companies who rely on ast
time to market and extraordinary product quality to drive market share and prots.
Patran enables engineers to directly import CAD geometry rom whichever CAD program
an engineer chooses, dene loads, boundary conditions, and material properties, perorm
dierent simulations under dierent conditions, visualize the results, and ultimately
better understand the relationship between design decisions and product perormance
characteristics such as stress, strain, vibration, heat transer and many more.
In addition, Patrans intuitive graphical interace is built to be ully customizable to your
organizations unique engineering processes. With Patran Control Language (PCL), engineerscan supplement the powerul modeling and analysis capabilities with their own, customized

applications, commands, and menus.
Patran users can easily and eectively
iterate and evaluate dierent design
decisions and reuse existing designs and
results without non-value-added manual
clean-up and recreation o data.
Direct Access o CAD Geometry
Patran enables direct access to geometry
rom leading CAD systems or creating
nite element models. With direct access,
geometry remains intact in the CAD ormat
and is imported into Patran database without
any translation or modication. Support
or many industry-standard geometry
exchange ormats is provided. An option is
also available or direct import into Parasolid
ormat or several CAD systems and
exchange ormats. All nite elements, loads,
boundary conditions, and material properties
can be associated to the geometry.
Geometry Creation and Editing
Patran contains an advanced set o geometry
creation tools in addition to the direct CAD
access capabilities or generating nite
element model geometry. Patran also
has a sophisticated eature recognition
capability that allow users to delete or edit
holes, llets, and chamers. For 3D solid
geometry, existing meshes and loads will
be automoatically re-applied to the model
ater a change is made to the geometry.
Integration with MSC Nastran
Patran is tailored to support MSC Nastran
to enable the use o common nite
element models and perorm advanced
engineering analysis. Perorm linear,
nonlinear, and dynamic structural analyses
using MSC Nastrans best in class solver
technology. Enhance your design using
MSC Nastrans Design Optimization and
Topology Optimization capabilities.
Graphical User Interace
Patrans graphical user interace is
a orms-based, mouse-driven menu
system or the operation o all tasks. It is
designed to be easy to learn and use.
Interactive Help On-Line
Patrans Help system provides a
context-sensitive hypertext mechanism
enabling the user to quickly navigate
through the entire on-line document to
nd inormation on topics o interest.
Finite Element Modeling
Patrans nite element modeling system
permits the user to directly access
model geometry and to quickly develop
nite element meshes. Easily create and
modiy your nite element mesh using
automated mesh generators and MSC.
Sotwares technology such as the Mid-
Plane and Advanced Surace Meshers,
Loads and Boundary Conditions
Patran provides a complete set o loads
and boundary conditions such as structural
and thermal. Functional variations can
be evaluated with mathematical actors
or other analysis results. Loads and
boundary conditions can be specied
as total or incremental basis. A new Bolt
Tool is available to easily create bolts
and other connectors or more ecient
assembly modeling and analysis.
Materials and Elements Properties
Patran supports an array o material
models such as Isotropic, orthotropic,
anisotropic, composite, thermal isotropic, thermal orthotropic and thermal anisotropic
to perorm a variety o analysis.
Results Evaluation
Patran can quickly and clearly display
analysis results in structural, thermal,
atigue, fuid, magnetic terms, or in
relation to any other application where the
resultant values are associated with their
respective nite elements or nodes.
Imaging
Imaging encompasses the complete
graphics capability ound within the Patran
product, including graphic shading and visual
verication prior to analysis. Imaging eatures
a number o options that take advantage ospecialized hardware capabilities, including
local view manipulation, local shading,
multiple light sources, and transparency.
You can also export images and movies
in many standard ormats to include in
documents and web-based reporting.
Patran Command Language
PCL is the programming language at the
heart o Patran. PCL is a high-level, block-
structured language that provides many
eatures ound in traditional programming
languages. It can be used to write application
or site-specic commands and menus,
perorm variational modeling, and to more
completely integrate with commercial
or in-house sotware programs.
Confguration Requirements
Patran currently supports many Unix,
Windows and Linux based computer
platorms, operating systems, and graphic
devices. System resources required to
operate Patran depend upon a number
o actors including the overall size and
complexity o each model. Please consult with
your local MSC.Sotware representative ora current list o Patran supported computer
systems or your particular application.
