CHANCELLOR MICHAEL MARK’S MESSAGE
Brothers:
I hope all of you had a wonderful Christmas and New Year’s with your family andfriends. I want to take this opportunity to wish you and your families a happy andhealthy new year.
It is now time for us to focus on the important tasks at hand — fundraising for ourcouncil and various charities, and recruiting new member Knights and serving as
mentors to them as well. If we wish to build a strong council, we must all put in a concerted effort to make ithappen. What we get out of Council 5073 is what each and every one of us is willing to put into it. Being supportiveof one another and fostering love and respect as brother Knights will be the key to our future success as a council.
We had a very successful Christmas turkey roll that took place in December which helped raise some funds for theColumbus Charities, as well as generate some revenue for the hall and some funds for our council. It is time for usto come up with new ideas for more fund raising initiatives and fraternal events that will bring a positive as well asspiritual atmosphere to Council 5073.
Let’s all work cooperatively towards this very important goal. Deuteronomy 15:11: “There will always be poorpeople in the land. Therefore I command you to be openhanded toward your brothers and toward the poorand needy in your land.”
Vivat Jesus,
Michael Mark, Chancellor

PRAYER IN TIME OF NEED
Lord Jesus you came into the world to heal our infirmities and to endure our sufferings. Youwent about healing all and bringing comfort to those in pain and need.
We come before you now in this time of need asking that you may be the source of ourstrength in body, courage in spirit and patience in pain.
May we join ourselves more closely to you on the Cross and in your suffering that throughthem we may draw our patience and hope.
Assist us and restore us to health so that united more closely to our family, the Church, wemay give praise and honour to your name. Amen.

ENGAGING IN SERVICE
This is the eighth of several monthly articles that outlines what our duty, as Knights of Columbus, truly is. Our work as Knights focuses on 6 service categories of Church, Community, Council,Culture of Life, Family and Youth. The K of C “Service Program” is organized around these topics. In this article we’ll start to look at ‘Council Activities’ and ways that we can dedicate oursupport of this category.
Council programs and activities help foster a sense of fraternity and family in the Knight ofColumbus community. Members are our neighbours, friends and acquaintances. Opportunities are limited only bythe imagination in this category.
SPECIAL OLYMPICS
This is a most rewarding activity — to volunteer our services and time to raise funds for this sports-training andcompetition program for people with intellectual disabilities. In recent years, Knights of Columbus councils havedonated several million dollars and have volunteered several hundred thousand hours of volunteer services.
PUBLIC RELATIONS
First and foremost, it is important to keep our members up to date on council programs and activities. Anotheraudience is the Catholic community — the parishes the council serves and the broader community in which thecouncil is located. Ways a council can accomplish this include:
• Publishing a monthly bulletin or newsletter for its members• Maintaining and updating our council’s website• Spreading the word through traditional media newspapers, parish bulletins• Taking council inventory by completing Fraternal Activity Survey 1728
FRATERNALISM
The Knights of Columbus is a fraternity, a brotherhood; and it requires effort to strengthen those bonds. To do that, our council might:
• Encourage all members to wear their ID badges at all meetings and events• Present degree certificates to the members of each degree immediately after the exemplification• Select a “Knight of the Month” or “Knight of the Year” and present them with appropriate certificate(s)• Have an active presence at all funerals of Knights whose loved ones have passed. Speak at the reception
supporting Brother Knight and his council involvement• Spearhead Columbus Day celebrations in the community• Celebrate Founder’s Day with special celebrations for Father McGivney, our founder• Plan activities together as a group on a regular basis
In February’s newsletter we’ll continue with more information on ‘Fraternalism’.
