    Categorisation of Waters

    Notice to Owners, Operators and Masters

    This Notice supersedes Merchant Shipping Notice MSN 1758(M).

    MERCHANT SHIPPING NOTICE

    1. The Annex to this Merchant Shipping Noticesets out the categorisations that apply towaters in the United Kingdom. Thesecategorisations are given statutory force byway of Regulation 2 of the Merchant Shipping(Categorisation of Waters) Regulations 1992.

    2. Amendments to Merchant Shipping NoticeMSN 1758 and its Annex are shown in boldand additions are shown in italics.

    3. The four categories of waters are as follows:

    Category A: Narrow Rivers and canals wherethe depth of water is generally less than1.5 metres.

    Category B: Wider rivers and canals wherethe depth of water is generally 1.5 metres ormore and where the significant wave heightcould not be expected to exceed 0.6 metres atany time.

    Category C: Tidal rivers and estuaries andlarge, deep lakes and lochs where thesignificant wave height could not be expectedto exceed 1.2 metres at any time.

    Category D: Tidal rivers and estuaries wherethe significant wave height could not beexpected to exceed 2.0 metres at any time.

    4. These categorisations apply specifically to theoperation of Class IV, V and VI PassengerShips and also determine which waters are notregarded as "sea" for the purposes ofregulations made, or treated as made, underSection 85 of the Merchant Shipping Act 1995.

    5. Under the Merchant Shipping (Prevention ofOil Pollution) Regulations 1996 it should benoted that "sea" includes any estuaries or armsof the sea.

    Summary

    This statutory Merchant Shipping Notice sets out the categorisations of waters in theUnited Kingdom.

    6. These categorisations should not be confusedwith classifications for Passenger Ships asdesignated in the Merchant Shipping(Passenger Ships on Domestic Voyages)Regulations 2000 which implement the ECDirective on Safety Rules and Standards forDomestic Passenger Ships.

    7. The categorisations shown in the Annex applyat all times of the year unless otherwiseindicated. "Summer" means the months ofApril to October, inclusive, and "winter" meansthe months of November to March, inclusive.

    8. This Notice will come into force on 1 April 2003.
