CLUBS

Ancestral Health Interest Group About us: An interest group covering the evolutionary mismatch between modern lifestyles and those we evolved with. Many patients are suffering from living in an obesogenic and pro-inflammatory environment of processed foods and minimized physical activity. These factors appear to underlie many of the chronic non-communicable diseases that cost our health-services so much, and removing them is a key to reducing disease burden and 'de-prescribing' patients. Important aspects of this approach are not covered in medical education, but it is proving to be highly effective in practise as reflected by an expanding body of RCTs and clinical experience. For example, Family Physicians using a high food-quality, reduced carbohydrate approach with type 2 diabetes in the UK have won regional and national NHS awards for reducing drug costs. Join us to learn about what one General Practitioner described as “making Family Medicine fun again” - because it works so well. The group will host presentations from national and international invited speakers, including physicians using nutritional and lifestyle approaches with patients. The group's Facebook page features introductions to the field including links to publications and presentations. Recruitment - Position: Med-1 Rep Eligibility: M1 Role description:

• Make in class announcements to promote upcoming events Application process: Please send an email to [email protected] to apply.

Anesthesiology and critical care interest group About us: The MSS Anesthesiology and Critical Care Interest Group strives to provide McGill medical students with opportunities to explore the field of anesthesiology and its subspecialties, including Critical Care and Pain Medicine. Currently, clerkship does not provide much exposure to anesthesiology beyond the general surgery rotation and students interested in applying to anesthesia residency programs must seek out additional opportunities for training in this specialty. Through various activities, including talks by residents or fellows in anesthesia and hands-on training sessions to learn skills like intubation, the MSS Anesthesiology Interest Group will help students gain knowledge about the specialty of anesthesiology and further prepare interested students for anesthesia residency programs. This club will also serve as a conduit between McGill medical students and physicians practicing anesthesia at McGill by facilitating shadowing opportunities for students in anesthesiology and its various subspecialties. Clinical French Club About us: The Clinical French Club’s mission is to provide a structured and supportive environment to master the essentials of clinical French, including the language required to: - Take a history, - Conduct a physical exam and describe findings, - Explain the diagnosis and treatment plan, - Answer a patient’s questions about their situation. Our goal is to identify and practice simple, high-yield clinical language that can be put into practice immediately. We will achieve this goal through an iterative process in which members encounter real-life clinical situations they would like to improve in, and we prepare structured meetings in which to practice. By responding to immediate, real-life needs, we will complement existing resources which focus more broadly on formal grammar or conversational French. Our philosophy is that we’re all in this together, so let’s help each other learn faster and better! We welcome French speakers of all levels, from zero to native speakers. Meetings will be structured to emphasize 1-on-1 interview practice and in-depth feedback. A topic will be announced ahead of time and brief preparatory materials will be circulated. During the meeting, each student will have a chance to role-play both the doctor and the patient sides of the interview. Recruitment - Position: Med-1 Reps (x2) Eligibility: M1 Role description:

rise in medical school attendance and matriculation by women, and an increase in sensitivity towards the psychosocial needs of both male and female medical professionals. However, all healthcare professionals, no matter their gender identity, still face specific challenges during their education and practice including gender-based discrimination, micro-aggression and sexual harassment, and unequal opportunities for career development. Facing these everyday challenges alone negatively impacts both our professional and personal lives. The goal of FWM is to shed light on these individual struggles. Using workshops, facilitated discussions, and guest speakers, FWM aims to help healthcare professionals develop strategies to address gender-based problems. These skills will play a role in creating better environments for both learning and clinical practice. Over time, we hope to engage all students in healthcare professions in this dialogue to create a generation of leaders capable of recognizing and addressing gender-based issues. MSS Humanities and Arts in Medicine About us: We are a group of medical students who believe that the arts and humanities portray a side of medicine and the experience of illness, suffering, and healing that is not contained in the medical curriculum. What the arts and humanities can offer is to immerse us in the perspectives of people who we might otherwise find difficult to understand, challenge our assumptions and pre-conceived notions of groups of people and disease, and remind us of the beauty and complexity of human experience. In engaging with the arts and humanities during our time as medical students, our hope is that we will emerge from our current training not only competent, knowledgeable, and technically skilled, but also young doctors who are empathetic, sensitive to diverse perspectives, comfortable with the complexities and ambiguities of the human condition, and better able to connect with people from all walks of life who will be our patients.

Dealing with illness is often difficult for our mind and body, and often, there arises a need to channel thoughts, reflect on experiences, or simply distract oneself. This may be accomplished through writing and creating art. After arranging the Health Art Exhibition as well as attending the CCME, we encountered many students and professionals in the health field who have experienced this firsthand, and we would like there to be a space for them to share their work with others. We hope to do this through an online and print publication of visual art and writing submissions from students and professionals in the Faculty of Medicine at McGill. The online publication will be edited and will feature all submissions, whereas the print version will be a collection of both visual and writing pieces, that can be distributed to the McGill medical community. The goal is to create an open space, encourage sharing of and reflection on healthcare experiences, and foster a community for the arts and humanities. Recruitment - Position: Publicity Eligibility: M1-4 Role description:

McGill Medical Students for Choice About us: Medical Students for Choice (MSFC) stands up in the face of opposition. We work to destigmatize abortion provision among medical students and residents, and to persuade medical schools and residency programs to include abortion as a part of the reproductive health services curriculum. Today one of the greatest obstacles to safe and legal abortion around the world is the absence of trained providers. Medical schools are simply not addressing the topic; most physicians graduate with little more than circumstantial knowledge of abortion. As medical students and residents, we work to make reproductive health care, including abortion, a part of standard medical education and residency training. Recruitment - Position: Med-1 Rep Eligibility: M1 Role description:

• Organize events • Advertise events • Support club projects

Provincial and National Global Health Opportunities Hi everyone, Apologies for the incoming acronym salad. McGill is both a part of IFMSA Quebec (the QC branch of the International Federation of Medical Students) as well as CFMS Global Health (the Canadian branch of IFMSA). Both groups have similar (but subtly different) provincial and national committees (respectively) which focus on different areas of global health. Under common leadership (one “national officer”), individual campuses have “local officers” which act as representatives for each portfolio on different campuses. Together, they collaborate on a number of advocacy events and campaigns on different themes in global health. About us: The Special Projects and Community Involvement (SPCI) Committee is a standing committee of the MSS whose mission is to empower medical students/groups looking to initiate and/or consolidate innovative community-based projects by providing them with access to funding and other resources. Each year, the SPCI runs two applications cycles in which they collect funding applications for community-based projects initiated by an MSS member. Members are responsible for reviewing each application and interviewing the appropriate candidates before awarding the appropriate projects funds. Thus, members of the SPCI commit to 2-3 meetings at the beginning of each semester to plan the application process, and then several hours reading and evaluating applications before conducting interviews over 1-2 days. Further meetings may be required to debrief each application cycles and make improvements for following years.
