What’s AheadMOORHEAD, Minn. -- The Minnesota State University Moorhead women’s basketball team concludes the regular season this week with games at Bemidji State (6 p.m. on Friday) and Minnesota Crookston (4 p.m. on Saturday).

The Dragons (14-10, 13-7 NSIC) have already clinched a first-round home game in the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference tournament, which begins on Feb. 25. They trail Northern State by one game in the NSIC North Division race.

MSUM (12-10, 11-7 Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference) will face Bemidji State for a 96th time. The Dragons hold a 56-39 edge in the series, including a 94-74 rout of the Beavers in January. MSUM owns a 30-4 lead in the series with Minnesota Crookston and beat the Golden Eagles, 68-64 in January.

MSUM earned two home wins last weekend, beating Minnesota Duluth, 68-59 on Friday and then dominating St. Cloud State, 89-56 on Saturday. Junior guard Meghan Roehrich averaged 21.5 points in the two wins for MSUM.

Roehrich leads MSUM at 18.5 points per game while junior Heather Strese averages 10.3 points and a team-best 6.5 rebounds per game. Sophomore Natalie Van Wyhe averages 3.9 assists per game while sophomore guard Morgan Banasik leads at 1.6 steals per game. As a team MSUM scores 68.2 points per game and shoots 38.7 percent. MSUM outrebounds its foes 41.5-35.6 while allowing 66.0 points per game on defense. Teams shoot 39.5 percent against the Dragons this season.

Karla Nelson is in her 15th season as MSUM’s head

coach with a record of 254-169 at the school.

About Bemidji StateThe Beavers are 6-19 overall and 3-17 in the NSIC. They have lost 11 of 12 games, including road losses at Mary (55-45) and Minot State (77-50) last weekend.

Sierra Senske leads Bemidji State at 14.6 points and 6.1 rebounds per game, while Aimee Pelzer averages 11.0 points and 2.8 assists per game. Pelzer also leads with 37 steals. Bemidji State averages 64.0 points per game and shoots 39.2 percent from the field.

The Beavers are being outrebounded, 39.4-34.8 by their foes and are surrendering 72.9 points per game on defense.

Mike Curfman is in his 10th season as Bemidji State’s head coach with a record of 97-175 at the school.

About Minnesota CrookstonThe Golden Eagles are 12-12 overall and 11-9 in the NSIC. They split on the road last weekend, falling at Minot State, 75-69 before beating Mary, 72-54. Katrina Moenkedick averaged 21 points in the two games for UMC.

Junior Alexa Thielman leads UMC at 16.4 points per game while Moenkedick averages 14.8 points and 6.5 rebounds per game. Moenkedick and Ebony Livingston share the team lead with 52 assists while Thielman has 41 steals. UMC averages 69.7 points per game and shoots 39.6 percent from the field.

The Golden Eagles outrebound their foes, 39.5-38.3 allow 67 points per game on defense.

Mike Roysland is in his ninth year as UMC’s head coach with a record of 73-167 at the school.

•MSUM sophomore point guard Natalie Van Wyhe is now tied for second in the conference in assist-to-turnover ratio at 1.9, which is also 33rd-best in the nation. She has 90 assists compared to 47 turnovers in 23 games played this season. Van Wyhe also ranks fifth in the

conference at 3.9 assists per game. Over the Dragons’ last 14 games, Van Wyhe has averaged 4.8 assists per game. Van Wyhe had a career-high nine assists in the Dragons’ win over Mary in December and has five games of five assists or more already this season.

•Junior Meghan Roehrich, who is a junior eligiblity-wise but will gradu-ate in May, made her final home regular-season game a memorable one on Feb. 14. She poured in 31 points -- one away from a career-high -- in the Dragons’ 89-56 rout

of St. Cloud State. Roehrich, pictured left, is now sixth in school history with 113 three-pointers made and also has climbed into the top 10 in three-pointers attempted. Roehrich has hit 56 three-pointers this season, which is seven away from the single-season record held by Marisa Yernatich in 2012-13. Roehrich is second in the NSIC -- and 36th in the nation -- in scoring at 18.5 points per game and has scored 20 points or more in a game nine times this year to lead the Dragons. Roehrich is also tied for the NSIC lead at 2.3 three-pointers made per game and ranks fifth in the league in three-point percentage at 37.3 percent.

• MSUM is ranked second in the NSIC in free-throw percentage at 77.6 percent per game, which also ranks the Dragons 14th in all of Division II. MSUM hit 33-of-41 attempts (80.5 percent) in its two home wins last weekend to con-tinue that effectiveness at the foul

line. Four Dragon starters are shooting 72 percent or better at the line, led by sophomore guards Natalie Van Wyhe at 85.7 percent and Morgan Banasik at 83.5 percent and followed by senior Meghan Roehrich at 79.7 percent and junior Heather Strese, pictured at left, at 72 percent. As a team the Dragons have shot 80 percent or better from the free throw line in 12 games this season. MSUM has hit 387-499 attempts on the season while their opponents have converted 283-of-390 attempts on the year. The Dragons were third in the nation in free-throw percentage in 2013-14.

•After scoring in double figures in just three of the Dragons’ first 20 games, redshirt freshman forward Drew Sannes, pictured left, has emerged as a key scor-ing threat for the Dragons. The Hawley, Minn., native has scored in double figures in four straight

games, including a career-high 20 points on 9-of-10 shoot-ing in MSUM’s 68-59 win over Minnesota Duluth on Feb. 14. During that four-game stretch, Sannes has averaged 16.0 points and 9.9 rebounds per game and has recorded the first two double-doubles of her career.

•After averaging 21.5 points per game, junior guard Meghan Roehrich was named the NSIC North Division Player of the Week on Feb. 16. It marked the third time this season that an MSUM player has earned the weekly honor from the conference. On Jan. 5, junior forward Heather

Strese was named the NSIC North Division Player of the Week, while on Jan. 26, sophomore Morgan Banasik, pic-tured left, earned the weekly honor. The three player of the week honors ties MSUM for second among all NSIC North Division teams, trailing only Minnesota Crookston, which has had four players selected this season.

COACHING BIOThe 2014-15 season will be Karla Nelson’s 15th as head coach of the Minnesota State University Moorhead women’s basketball team. During her 14 years as head coach, MSUM has been a model of consistent success.

Nelson has 14 straight winning seasons as MSUM’s mentor. The Dragons have qualified for the conference tournament for 15 consecutive years -- having never missed a conference tournament -- including in all 14 years of Nelson’s tenure. The fastest coach in MSU Moorhead basketball history to reach the 200-win plateau, Nelson has accumulated a record of 240-159 in 14 seasons.

Also included in the success are three trips to the NCAA Division II post-season play, two national statistical titles, conference and region Coach of the Year endorsements and a Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference championship. Nelson is fourth among NSIC coaches in total wins at their respective schools.

Nelson has also coached 32 all-conference honorees in 14 seasons. She led Angie Jetvig to four All-American teams including two consecutive Daktronics All-American honors in 2011 and 2012. Nelson also helped Megan Rettke and Alison Nash-Gerlach to second team Daktronics All-American honors in 2010.

In 2013-14, MSUM finished 16-11, highlighted by wins over regional qualifiers Wayne State (ranked No. 8 at the time) and Concordia-St. Paul. Zabel was named to the All-NSIC first team while senior forward Megan Strese was named to the All-NSIC second team. Both players surpassed 1,000 points for their careers during the season; Strese left MSUM ranked 11th all-time in scoring at 1,228 points while Zabel finished in 15th at 1,115 points. Senior guard Haley Thomforde also finished her career fifth in assists under Nelson’s tutelage.

The 2012-13 season saw a young Dragon team with just two seniors earn a 16-12 mark and a first-round win in the NSIC tournament. MSUM also earned a win over No. 17-ranked Augustana, which ended up qualifying for the NCAA Division II Final Four. Also in 2012-13, senior Marisa Yernatich set the new career three-point record at MSUM, while junior Megan Strese earned first-team All-NSIC honors. Zabel was an All-NSIC second-team selection.

The first coach at MSUM to debut with back-to-back winning campaigns, Nelson and the Dragons made their first appearance in the NCAA Division II North Central Regional in 2004-05, returned in 2006-07, and qualified for a third time in 2008-09.

The 2006-07 team reached the 20-win plateau for the fifth time in program history and made a serious run for the NSIC title, placing second in the league tournament and suffered an NCAA Tournament opening round loss to the University of North Dakota.

In 2008-09, the Dragons were ranked as high as 13th in the nation, after going on an 11-0 run to open the season. The season ended in the second round of the NCAA Tournament, after picking up the first post-season win in program history. Nelson prodded her first club to a 15-12 overall record in 2000-01, the first winning season at MSUM in six years that also included a NSIC playoff invitation. In 2004-05 Nelson and the Dragons claimed their first NSIC outright title, cracked the nation’s Top-25 for the first time and received a NCAA Division II regional tournament invitation, the first time in the Head Coach’s career. MSUM finished 24-7 overall and set a Dragon single season record victories. Nelson was saluted as the NSIC Coach of the Year and Women’s Basketball Coaches Association (WBCA) Region 7 Coach of the Year as well. The WBCA Region 7 Coach of the Year honor was her second, the first coming during the 2002-03 season.

Nelson served six seasons as the Dragons’ No. 1 assistant from 1994-2000. When Jean Roise resigned in March of 2000, MSUM Director of Athletics Dr. Katy Wilson quickly promoted Nelson to the top post..

A recreation major, Nelson completed an undergraduate degree from North Dakota and a Master’s Degree from North Dakota State University in Health Education. Nelson was a member of the coaching staff at East Grand Forks and Grand Forks Public Schools for three years before moving to MSUM.
